Title  175 Portrait Pack, Revised
Author  various (compiled by Lilivati)
Submitted / Updated  01-13-2004 / 01-25-2004
Category  NPC
Gender  Portrait Pack
Format  BioWare Standard
Description
This portrait pack has been modified, and it should no longer contain any duplicates. Also, it has been fleshed out a bit and there is now something for each gender of each race, although it is still far from balanced (heavy on human and elf female portraits, and drow portraits). Thus it now contains 188 portraits from various artists; none of the artwork is mine. This is in hak pak format, with a midified .2da based on the HotU .2da, so it can be used for NPCs. NOTE: For those of you only interested in portraits for PCs, I have posted the 188 Portrait Pack which is not in hak pak format.

Sorry about the extension confusion, Dragonmom. To be honest, .rar is used so extensively on the vault that I didn't even think to mention it, though in hindsight I likely should have. In any case, I'm glad you're enjoying the hak.

It might be a good idea to let people know that this file needs the WINRAR to unzip it. I have been using WINZIP for so many years and now WinXP has its own unzipping tool that I was unaware of any new formats. After downloading this file and seeing that it had a .rar extention, I was a bit confused. So please let people know what compression format is being used for these files so everyone will have the ware to unzip them. After I found out what I needed, I was very happy with the file. It has some great potraits in it. A must have for every DM.

Hi, thanks for the portraits

I'm glad you included the half-orcs. In a battle between orcs and drow, I'll always root for the orcs =D

but I just wanted to say that there's a bunch of good portraits in here! thank u

This is a compilation of the old system into a single score. There were 4 that made this score of 6.25 then rounded to 6.

Ok, it took about three tries but the bad link is fixed. I just downloaded and checked the file, and everything seems to be in order. Sorry about that.

That's it, I have indeed extracted the 2da as well.

This is a dead link. Might want to fix that.

Alright, I cleaned up the file so there shouldn't be any duplicates remaining. I also added a few files for the less-popular races.

Avenger- I'm sorry you're experiencing a problem, but unfortunately I don't know what could be causing it. I know that doesn't help. The only thing I can think of is if you extracted the .2da also it could cause multiple portraits in character generation.

the MacNWN user- I've posted a file called "188 Portrait Pack" that has all these portraits in non-hak format, for use in character generation. Probably that's all most people want anyway. :)

Cavebear- In response to what you said, I think you made a lot of good points. However, when I was hunting for more diverse portraits, in several cases I only found a handful. So to some extent a portrait pack has to reflect the proportions inherent to the vault.
Concerning the drow portraits- I know there are a lot; I'm a little obsessed. When I began collecting drow portraits there weren't many available, so I took what I could find. Now that there is an abundance of high-quality drow portraits I may revise my list, but it hasn't happened yet. (By the way, I considered lightening some of the drow portraits, but decided that would be taking too much license with someone else's work.)
Concerning the "manga" portraits, there are only two or three in the pack that I would consider true manga or anime style. However, there are a number of "drawing-style" portraits that are distinctly different from the photo-realistic ones. I agree they do not match, but I like both styles so they're both in here. :)
I hope this helps clarify why this pack looks the way it does. Mostly, it's just stuff I thought looked good, without any rhyme or reason. Maybe in the future I will put together thematic packs, but this is not meant to be one.

Quick review:

There are two sets of exact duplicates, and one of those pair have a third portrait that is the same character in a slightly different pose. There's another set of duplicates that is the same portrait reversed. Not too bad for a large portrait Hak.

There are no half-orc portraits (and there are a number of good ones on the Vault)

The elf portraits are heavy on drow, and many of the drow portraits selected are either too dark or bad colorizations (or both).

While most of the portraits are photo-realistic traditional fantasy art, there are a few manga-style portraits that don't fit the overall theme.

All-in-all, I think this could have been trimmed to a more reasonable size and provided a bit more variety. Yes, the Vault is heavy on females (especially female elves), but there are other portraits and a good collection will find and expose that diversity rather than continue to hide it.

*Everyone* can extract HAK content. In the NWN/utility/ folder is a file nwhak.exe. Load the HAK with that, then select export all from the Resource menu. Use NWN/portraits/ as the target folder.

That's exactly what I did, and I could swear I saw at least 10-20 duplicates and a few triplets when making a new char.

I know this may be asking a lot and you've already clearly done so much to make this package possible. But, can you please just do the 'simple' export to a normal portrait format and recompress the file for those of us using MacNWN which does not have a utility to export from .hak files?

I would very much like to check out your portrait collection here.

Thank you.

Avenger-
There are exactly two duplicates, and no triplets. The duplicates are not counted in the 175 portrait count. That said, your point is well taken and I could have cleaned this up. But frankly, once I got done renaming all the files and doing the .2da I was feeling too lazy :)

If the problem had been more extensive than it is, I would have cleaned it up.

Posted by Avenger ( ..xxx.xxx ) at 2004-01-24 01:22:00
You should clean this up somewhat. There are multiple duplicates and triplets in there.

gundam-

there are two ways to use this hak.

the first way is, if you are making a module, place this hak into your NWN hak folder. then, in the toolset, you can go to edit, module properties, custom content tab and add this hak to the list. this will allow you to use these portraits for NPCs.

if you want to use them for PCs, you have to do something different. in the utils folder under NWN, open the nwhak program. then open this hak. select all the files listed, right click on them, and then select extract and put them in your portraits folder.

i chose to put them in hak form because it's much more work to adapt portraits for NPCs then to dump them in your portraits directory. unfortunately this means more work for people who just want the portraits for PCs.

and btw- gundam was the coolest anime ever :)
