Title  An intelligent veteran dwarf
Author  Sagadur

Category  Dwarf

Format  BioWare Standard
Why shouldn't a dwarven fighter be intelligent...? If he survived several adventures he needs a lot of muscle or enough brain to decide when to fight and when to retreat (he doesn't look like fleeing). And before someone points out that there is no visible piece of armor: he also should know when those inconvinient steelplates are not necessary ;-). Updated: Only a minor change: hair and beard now actually cast shadows on the skin and thus fit the face more smoothly. 2nd update: Again I worked on the hair (after getting more experience) it is now fuller and hopefully more realistic. I also reworked the lighting and the shadows. All of these are small changes so they won't be that noticable in the small ingame portraits. But I just 'had' to put more work in him and then: why not post it ;-). I inserted parts of the old Picture in the big preview (so that changes may even be noticed ;-) ).

Wow this portrait is really good! One of the best dwarven ones I've seen :) I love the hair as well! I've been trying to draw hair from scratch for agges but it never turns out right.. How'd you do it?
Everything in this room is eatable. Even I'm eatable. But that is called cannibalism, my dear children, and is in fact frowned upon in most societies.

Very good - amazing hair.

Very good work.. yet the bigger versions look better then the small preview.

Much better than the standard fare 'grumpy old guy with axe' that most dwarf portraits are.

Nice Drawing

Although detailed, it doesn't quite have the feel of a dwarf in it, in my opinion.

Well there is an older version of him herer in the portraitsection. With "veteran" I meant an experienced fighter and didn't think about high age - but some gray streaks might be interesting (if I had the time ;-) ).

I didn't need to see the hair closeup, but very good regardless.

Really great.
Only one question:When he is veteran, why he is not greyhaired?

I used to work only in The GIMP until I got Photoshop Elements with my Scanner (I see no use of buying it as GIMP satisfies all my needs in that section). As Photoshop Elements is a bit more flexible in changing brushes I use it most of the time when I'm painting in the true sense of the meaning.
When it comes to a mix of techniques and filters I prefer The GIMP and I'm currently thinking about using it alone again because cluttering the computer with software is not my style.

What was the program you used? Photoshop? Or some other? I like the pic.

It's not your monitor, but as there is no direct light falling on the left eye, there should be almost no specular reflection (so the missing highlight was left out on purpose). I hope it's still satisfactory to you (and thanks for the positive feedback).

Very nice! Like the update. Maybe it is just my monitor, but it seems his left eye could have a little more reflection. Still, great work and great work improved!

yeah, I can see that alot of work went into the hair. Well done"Light travels faster than sound, that's why some people appear bright until you hear them speak"

Posted by Sagadur at 2004-08-04 05:41:00
The hair is painted (all of it). I used a very thin brush (3pxl) and just followed the direction i wanted the hair to grow. I think it's not that hard but it requires quite an amount of time (quite a lot of hair on one dwarf).
Also I allways tried to keep the final lighting of the picture in mind (the fiery glow and the shadows where the last steps done in the picture). Also i wanted his hair not to shiny and silky and thus was careful not to add to much highlights (like in elvish hair ;-) ).
Apart from that I don't know if I can give further helpful advice, only that just start and try as mistakes are not that serious (just get that other haircolor and rework that region).
