Title  In-Game Druid Portrait Draft
Author  Ahnion
Submitted / Updated  04-18-2004 / 04-18-2004
Category  Druid
Gender  Male
Format  BioWare Standard
Description
This is not a final, tweaked portrait. It is a draft for an idea of how to create portraits that are closer to the in-game representation of characters. It is based on a screenshot, which has been edited by cutting in a quick background and a face made in Poser 5. I don't proclaim to be a good artist, but I do realise that there are more people who, like myself, have trouble finding suitable portraits for characters - not to mention thematically consistent though varied portraits for module campaigns. This is a proposed solution, which I upload mainly for commmentary on the idea. I stress again that this image is not what I would call a final portrait. Polygon edges need to be smoothed out and highlighting as well as detail added. This, I will do if the response to the idea is positive. Otherwise I will only use it for my own NPC portraits.

While it's a good idea for people who like these sort of portraits, made out of screenshot I personally feel it's also a nice challenge to fit the character in the game to the portrait. Especially with Lisa's clothes you have much choice (plus the new faces that came with CEP). But that's my preference.
I like the portrait, very nice atmosphere and good colours.

First of all, thank you. I was uncertain of the virtues of this idea, hence the posted idea rather than a final portrait.

The door/glow bit sounds like a good idea, though it seems to be that it could greatly diminish the atmosphere of a portrait. Since I'm using Poser for the faces, I have the possibility of matching lighting rather well, and I think I will try to get the most out of the first screenshot in terms of impression as well. The screenshot is, and will be taken in 1600x1200 with full detail, full FSAA and anisotropic filtering (the latter makes quite some difference in some cases).

Applying effects to a duplicate layer is always a good idea. I should probably mention that I am using PSP8 and not PS7, so effects are not entirely the same, but the possibilities are, on the whole.

Fundamentally, making several different portraits on the same base screenshots should be fairly simple, since once the mask is down, I could easily switch the heads.

I will try to get a final done in the coming week. After that I suspect work by request is the most sensible approach./ J D I Andersson

I think this is a good plan and you should proceed with it. Could you even paste several different faces in to make a set of similar portraits?

Yeah, Rich is correct in the holding the cursor over the subject. You get the best available detail in the screenshot this way, and as you know the glow can be easily cut out.
Instead of doing direct filters on the character, try a copy/paste of the subject and change the opacity to around 22%. Then add the 'Smudgestick' and the 'Smart Blur' to this. It will take away some of the foly look and make smoothing out your 'corners' a lot easier. Also, when using screenshots for portraits turn your resolution uo to as high as it will go without causing problems. This will also give you a shrper screenshot to start with.
I like the idea of your pasting Poser heads in. Personally, I have had to make my own head models just to get a satisfactory screenshot portrait."Me Go Beer!" - Mr. Dave

Very nice! I've always thought this would be a great idea, since it's hard to match your character head to the available portraits. I've found the best way to get a screen shot of my character is to put them in front of a big door and then hover the mouse over them for the screenshot. The "mouse hover glow" doesn't show up against the door.

I'm really impressed with your enhancement of the screen grab, this is really professional work!
