Darkness Enthralled Part 1: Back Tracking

"After awakening in a field surrounded by bodies, you struggle to regain your memories and understand what exactly happened to you the night prior. Plagued by odd nightmares and unexplainable coincidences, you begin to realize there is something sinister at work here. The town of Darren offers you a safe haven and a chance to take back what's yours from the Darkness that Enthralls around you."

- A huge focus on environment and atmosphere in 70 areas. I didn't stop working on an area until I felt it met my highest expectations.
- Extensive use of CEP to help make unique creatures, items, and placeables like you've never seen.
- 35 unique side quests, most of which chain multiple times.
- 15,700 words of dialogue make up an unsuspectingly dramatic story with twists and turns that holds you in tight.
- Creativity you won't see in any other series.

- CEP 2.3/2.4
- Community Music Pack
(,, and required. DO NOT USE .hak included in!)
- Fresh level 1 character.

- This module is very placeable heavy, some lower end computers may have trouble loading certain areas.
- Although there is a bleeding system, death is PERMANENT, save OFTEN.
- Rest requires an inn room or a tent kit. I did this to discourage people finding the closest free bed and continually go there rather than an inn.
- There are no henchmen with exception to certain sections of the modules. This module focuses on your character.
- This module REQUIRES a fresh level 1 character, scripts won't fire correctly if you tamper with XP.
- If you use a camera mod, I discourage having the camera extended out all the way before area transitioning. I've had crashes.
- This series is meant for a certain breed of NWN player. One that can enjoy roleplaying and take a second to look around at the details. There is plenty of combat but heavy hack-n-slash types may find it boring.

I put a LOT of work into the beginning of this series and truly only want it to bring some kind of enjoyment into your life. If you enjoyed it, hated it, or thought it was okay, please comment here so at least I know there was more than some non-emotional cyborg race downloading my module. o.o I expect there to be some bugs or issues, and I will try to update them as much as possible, but I won't have nearly as much time to dedicate for the next couple of months. This also played a hand in the time I wish I had to develop this module. I got it to a point I could be proud of but there still maybe some small mistakes (including spelling and loading screens). I just didn't have enough time to test and test and test. I apologize if this hinders anyone's experience. With this said, I do think a lot of people will enjoy playing what I've created, and I personally thank you for the download.

- Fixed issue with Cave door, weird henchmen bug, Vald conversation after finishing the Nora section, and other bugs.
- Large update, fixes all plot critical quests and known issues as of this date. Extensive but not complete change log included in download.
- Fixed a number of issues, extensive change log will be available soon.

If you are experiencing the bug of not having certain NPC's appearing hostile when they need to be, you can do the follow if you don't wish to wait for the patched module:
- Pause the game. Hit ~ and type DebugMode 1, hit enter.
- Hit ~ and type dm_setfactionenemy, select the NPC.
- Hit ~ and type DebugMode 0.
This is only a TEMPORARY fix. Waiting for the patched module is recommended as this quick-fix hasn't been tested.

This really deserves more attention, it is apparent that a lot of effort has been put on this mod, its simply breathtaking.

There's a known issue with the Northern Outskirts not loading correctly. I experienced it a number of times before it suddenly began to work and hasn't happened since. This leaves me no room to test if I can fix it or not. I DO believe it helps if you zoom the camera all the way in before beginning the area transfer. Once you've transferred, save under a new save, and continue playing.

I apologize for the loading issues, and certainly hope you'll check back here for solutions so you can finish up the module. There will be an update soon enough to fix a number of issues, and help connect part 2 into this module. Part 2 is in the process of being built at the moment.

Hello, You state to not use the .hak from 1.0a, what about the one from the CMP Full? I did install that and had not knoticed an issue. However now that I can leave out the north gate I get constant crashes. I cant make it to Lux(something). Sometimes it crashes at transition, sometimkes in North Outskirts. Have tried 10 times to get past this.

Ahh! Thanks for the clarification, Vehemence, I definitely didn't notice that those levers did anything before. I have run into a couple of roadblocks since then, one being that when Lin first appears, a nearby sparrow immediately goes hostile on her, leaving you trapped outside of dialogue and no way to reinitiate, or even open the menu box. Killing the sparrow before approaching worked just fine. However I'm just now heading out the north gate, and I get to about 75-80% load and NWN crashes :/ Happened repeatedly, I'll keep tinkering and see what I can do.

The town of Darren? I'm liking this already! :D I can't play it right now but I downloaded it anyway so I'll have it when I'm able to (in a few months).

Thank you for the nice comments, such keeps me wanting to create more modules. ;) I'm currently only able to work on updates for about half an hour per night so I apologize for the lack of fixes. I can however give you some insight into the True Water issue (it's not a bug, just a puzzle). If you'd like to continue working on it than don't read below for the puzzle spoiler.

To access the True Water, you need to initiate all of the water falls on the TOP floor of the Sharaba Ruins. As soon as you enter the Ruins, you'll see four levers. Activate them to allow the water to fall from the roof through the holes in the floor behind the bars. Once they are activated, the water will fall to Sharaba Ruins - Lower, right ontop of a set of four statues. If the correct statues have water falling upon them, they will turn the stone altar into a True Water altar. Follow the flow of water to the altar. You do need the corresponding Sharaba Key (received from Saint Alexis High Priest Lennis for the quest) to enter the room which the True Water is.

Absolutely top notch work here, man. Visually stunning, puts the original NWN developers/builders to shame. I'd gotten stuck on the Shay root issue (above) but decided to just start over, lost a good bit of time but well worth it over all.

As stated it was a little crowded in areas leading to 'stuck' situations but usually able to get them moving without debugging.

Couple issues I had, that were slightly game-changing:

-Healing waters, was able to use them the first time in the St. Alexis temple, then every time after got the 'You cannot use that again so soon' message, no matter how many times I'd gotten a room and rested. Same thing with the healing waters font in the Sharaba ruins, first time trying to use it gave me the same message.

-A couple of the quests are exploitable now, specifically the blue crystal rose, as Lolly gives you the gold/xp for 6 roses and takes only 1. I turned it in about 4 times before realizing she was going to keep handing me money and xp :P

-Same for the goblin tobacco pouches, Silvia only takes 1 pouch but gives credit for 10. You can't turn it in again so not so much an issue there.

-Also the Galaford quest turn-in, if you've got the persuasion check you can keep returning to J. Rodel with the helm and telling him the story, only to persuade him to let you keep it and still score the XP bonus repeatedly.

-This one's got me scratching my head, and might just be my own idiocy, but I cannot for the life of me find the 'True Water' in the Sharaba ruins. Cleared everything, including the Giant Hanging Aqua, checked all openables except the 1 barrel against the southern wall when you enter the 2nd level, can't seem to access that one for some reason. I went and got a couple of empty bottles to see if they might trigger something, but no change. Am I missing something? Anyone got any ideas?

Love it so far, but I am having the same issue as Neilium above, in that the shay root I need was destroyed while battling the Satyrs. I didn't realize until later, and had saved over my recent game. Can they be spawned somehow, or reset even?

Posted by Vehemence at 2012-05-25 13:29:19

Sorry for the slow response. I'm moving across the country and haven't had much access to the internet. x.o For the Blindless Order Door, it's meant to be opened by a lever in a different location. Search near the entrance to the Blindless Order Compound.

(me again)

I thought I'd try a different direction while waiting for someone to answer, and now I have another question:

I have been given a quest by Lin to find Caldin in the Blindless Order Compound, located in the eastern part of Wild Forest. I have found the cave entrance, but cannot open the locked door inside! (Lockpicking and Bashing are futile.) Where was I supposed to get the key??

Posted by Neilium at 2012-05-10 18:41:31
(answering my own post again)

Ok, I figured it out. I had visited the place he was being held before I was given the quest, so I guess a script didn't fire. Speaking of quests, I am supposed to bring back a "Shay Root" to the Coroner, but it was destroyed (by lightning) during the Satyr battle. Is there any way to find another somewhere, or perhaps spawn one in?

Hoping to get a reply!

I have another question for anyone who's played a little further:

**Spoilers Below**

I have found Tarv's Journal and I'm supposed to bring it to his brother somewhere, but I can't remember where to find him! A small hint would be appreciated. Oh, and speaking of Tarv, I actually found him (alive!) but cannot interact with him at all, he won't speak to me when I click him.
**End Spoilers**

Thanks in advance!

(answering my own post in case it helps others)

I met a very "cool" NPC, and he was nice enough to donate his Ice Dagger(+3) to my cause. That did the trick, and my hat's off to Garford! :)

Posted by Neilium at 2012-05-09 16:19:40
Hi folks!

I'm having fun playing this mod so far, but I have a question:

What do you need in order to damage Garford in the mausoleum?

I seem to only land 1 out of every 10 blows, and by that time I'm a puddle.
(Playing lvl5 Paladin with Lightning Sword, if that helps.)

Thanks in advance!

@OfficerDon... You will need to get as close to the Captainís door as you can. Move your camera to TOP DOWN and click on the Capt. That SHOULD initiate the required dialogue with him. I managed to have him on the far side of his desk and still got the dialogue going.

A couple of comments before I give my ď2-bitsĒ.
Firstly, the game is called Back Tracking for a reason. So you might as well get used to it. Most of the stuff going on are interconnected and related to the Storyline. Secondly, until the Builder gets an update uploaded, the Transition Triggers will need some getting used to. As will the dialogue ingame where your PCís name is always used. BUILDERíS CHOICE. ĎSides, I DID ask.
Now then... Aside from what I said above, it was truly a great romp. It did take a bit before I got used to the method used to Transition Area to Area [the first time I genuinely thought my character got his butt hit with a massive spell until the transition fired]. But afterwards... okay then, moving along.
Area Maps: WELL done and thought out. About the only thing I couldnít get over was the method used to name the various items. From the critters to the chairs. This could stand a bit of rethinking on the Builderís part. Oh, donít bother with the critters even if running with a Ranger Class. Theyíll not bother you except to stop and face you. One or two of the area maps did seem to be a tad overcrowded and it did take me a while to get my character unstuck.
Quests: Thereís one Main storyline and several sides. Most of them are interrelated AND connected to the Storyline so you are going to need to do many, if not ALL. The Storyline will NOT let you advance until you meet certain requirements. Level being the biggest one.
Doors, etc: Most of the shops etc are ď9 to 5Ē so donít expect anything to be open late at night except the Barracks and the Inn. Many areas will NOT let you in unless youíve gotten the particular quest. Just make a note and carry on. Thereís a single merchant, near the Dock Entrance, that seems to be open 24/7. Heís got good gear and also has a long-ish quest. As you travel, when you find a door or area you canít get in, make a note of and keep going. It MAY or MAY NOT open later via a key or trigger.
Loot, gold: The gold drops could be better, so as you find sellable stuff, do so. As you advance in level so does the difficulty. So the better weapons etc the better off.
Healing: There are two temples in town. One has a healing freebee and the other will sell potions.
WARNING: As noted in the Description above, Death is PERMENENT. Period. So SAVE. Often. Iíd actually suggest doing so as you enter new areas.
Class and Alignment: As noted, Casters will have a hard go. I ran with a Rogue and kept her at that. But whichever class you opt for, if you can lace points in Open Lock and Disarm Traps. Youíll need that at various points. Donít bother with an EVIL alignment. You will not be playing to it. So simply put... DONíT waste the effort. The game IS catering to GOOD. You will, however, at certain points along the way, be given an option. Stealing doesnít seem to hurt you though as the NPCs donít seem to react.
Journal: READ it. Itís there for you. So if youíre running with a couple of quests at once, youíll know where youíre at with them.
Grammar/Spelling: Youíll see some things but never mind them. They wonít detract from gameplay.
Overall: As I said, not a bad game, I did enjoy myself and I think if you give this a go, itíll give the Builder the incentive to fix the problems here and get the next part out for us. ENJOY!!

Yep I've done everything for the Saint Alexis temple at least as far as I'm aware. Got the light thingy in the temple working anyway.

I'll try talking to the captain through the door and see what happens.

What section of The Meeting? You may be at the stage to meet him in Luxhold, not the barracks. If you haven't completed the quests for Saint Alexis you'll need to do that first.

If you've done all this and can't get to Captain Vald, this is bug. I haven't experienced that bug myself but let me know if that's whats going on. If need be, you can actually speak to the Captain through the door when he wanders close enough to it.

I've been in all the areas I can and all the beasties are dead. Now I'm tiddling my thumbs.

Gah! You're absolutely right. You can use dm_movetoarea CoastCaveBottom to teleport you to the area. This issue will be fixed in the next update, which will be posted as soon as I fix a few other small bugs. Thank you for the feedback!

Ok I'm doing the quest for the captain of the Darran Star (just found it at level 7) Go to the spider cave and to door that should lead to the lower level and nothing.

I can open the door but I'll be buggerd if I can get the trastion to fire.

Hi. Hint to OfficeDon
About blessed water try to split them i did that and it worked for me,one bl.water for one bones.

Thank you for the download, I'm glad you're enjoying it. Stop by again and tell me what you thought over all once you've completed the module, I'd like to hear more of your feedback.

You're right about the lack of undead properties. This stems from using the CEP Dynamic Skeletons rather than the original NW Skeletons. I assumed they had already applied the correct properties but obviously it's up to me to do that. ;)

The Transitions system will be much different for the entire Darkness Enthralled series, I'm already developing the new system. I'm realizing that I wrote the dialogue in a PW format, something that also won't be making another appearance in the series ('cept maybe in a PW).

I did notice those item greedy quests, they have been fixed. They will be in the next posted update which will be available after I here more feedback about another other existing bugs.

Quite enjoying the mod so far. It has a few quriks that take a bit of getting used to like the way area trastions work and the way the converstaions and dalouge is written. But that isn't a bad thing :)

One oddity I did notice was that the undead in the tower weren't immune to sneak attacks or critcal hits which I just found really strange (I'm playing a rouge which is why I noticed it)

Also noticed some sripts not working quite as they should. They aren't game braking which is a good thing. When completeing the flower and goblin tobaco quests instand of removing the number of iteams requqired to complete the quest everything is removed. I noticed this becase at the time I had 8 flowers and 12 tabaco pouchs in my invintory :)

Hvaing a stack of blessed water in my invintory also proved problmatic when clearing the tower, first pile of bones I click on and I lost the entire stack, not just one.

One amusing thing I did see was in the Slay Garden, one of the monsters was killed by a ferret :D
