Description
[v.2.4] Requires: NWN1.69+SoU+HotU

Although this is called a 'prelude', it's meant to be played after "Angel Falls" (but that's a recommendation, not a hard requirement). It's also meant to be played with a different character, since it takes place 100 years before the events in "Angel Falls" and it's geared for around 10th level.

"Angel Falls" can be found here:
Link

INTRO: "After your party had an unfortunate encounter with a lich you were killed. They brought you to the Alabaster Temple of The Way for ressurection, but after learning of the exorbitant fee that Cardinal Abernathy charged for such a service, they took your gold and left your body there."

@Copperhawk: I found a special ring in the wizard's tower(I think) that has weapon proficiency feat

Issues:
- respawning demons
- crypt cutscene is broken: visiting crypt near the end of the game, Helena does not show up, but I still speak my lines
- ghost does not acknowledge bard's death(she should)
- lich convo typo: "you're" instead of "your"
- no bags of holding, no low AC armour, no gold in shops, no way to sell those demonic armour... oh and gold stripping at the beginning of the module
- Lilith became hostile to me, I couldn't trick her into jumping in the mirror...

Thanks Rolo:)

The game is not as polished as Angel Falls. I have encountered the below 3 bugs:

1. The sister of the Bard will repeatedly give experience & raise the good alignment whenver you talked to her.
2. If you kill Lilith right in the beginning, the cutscene of Helena goes to the gypsy's cart will get stuck because Helena will initiative no conversation whatsoever and attacks the panther right at the beginning. But the panther at that moment is invulernable and so the fighting lasts forever.
3. In the cutscene after the player gave the portal key material to the sorceror, the cutscene will pan to the back of the sorceror and for some reason it blocks everything. I cannot see what happens except I can see the sorceror murmurs something like "no more".

Besides the bug, I found the below very inpleasant to me:

1. Killing the demons are repetitive and boring.
2. The cutscene that the player joins Gwen about playing a theatre is a joke. It does not have to contain the entire script of the Romeo & Juliet play, and then the male player character is not the same as the player character.
3. At first I play a monk character but I found out that this character cannot pick up the red metal ore because he has no simple weapon proficiency. Then in the halfway I restarted a ranger character.
4. Like another player mentioned, this game is a collection of easter eggs. Its story, atmosphere, characters are quite weak compared with Angel Falls.

Resurrection leading to indentured servitude is a great premise for a storyline. This is a good companion to Angel Falls, with connections to the lore of that module throughout.

Like Angel Falls, this mod is filled with a number of extras in terms of cutscenes and unlockable areas/quests. thegeorge deserves a great deal of credit for the effort that went into the mod, especially the different endings. The first part of the plot is also excellent, with a real sense of tension and conflict for the PC.

Unlike Angel Falls, my run-through of the prelude fell flat, with the better endings unreachable (the demon goddess being hostile and my level 9 PC not able to do anything about it). The walkthrough is also necessary, because in a few cases (i.e. the "end" of the sorcerer's quest) it's unclear what the situation is or if the player encountered a bug.

Thanks for the creative effort, too bad my experience didn't measure up to that of some others.

Wow, people are still playing this one? Thanks!

Short and sweet. Intriguing plot, beautiful area design (as usual) and a wonderful sense of unease and creepiness that I've come to expect from thegeorge. Loved the 'prelude' idea and I thought the whole "Your companions have dumped you at the temple" set-up was fun.

I think I might even train up another 20th level character so I can play Angel Falls again. :)

I have some questions about mod bulding, I am very new to mod building,
Question Ė Suppose I create an item and I want the game to consider a specified price for it , then what should I do? Like I create an armor whose price game puts as 15000 , but I want the whole game to consider the items price to be 5000 while keeping the rest of the items price unchanged then what to do?
Is there some way to disable the pointer showing our place in the map?

I really enjoyed these two, and I did play the prelude last...

I think my favorite parts were the folklore allusions...

Absolutely top of the line in every way!

I believe I addressed those issues one way or another now.

Alright, I'll look at those things again.

Personally, I think that this module is polished enough, especially for such a non-linear adventure, but just to clarify my previous bugreport:

1&2 Both bugs reproduce themselves quite stable, and everything is OK with my PC and NWN installation: finished more than hundred mods without any "exotic" problems. I've preserved the saves, may send/post them if you're interested.
3 They ARE at the same place at the same time. The cutscene goes like this: Cardinal and sister Lilian stand before the waterfall (near the rope), with Lilith appearing in the background. Then, new level loads, and we see another cutscene, where Cardinal and sister Lilian are purifying the place. Isn't it strange?
5 It has something to do with summons because the summoned creature keeps fighting with golem even when he entered non-aggresive state, thus preventing PC from opening the door. As a result, the player may not notice that golem entered non-aggressive state (as its fight with summoned creature continues almost constantly), and may decide that he reached a dead end.

And - sorry - forgot to vote, doing it now.

Posted by thegeorge at 2009-01-27 10:21:14
Thank you for that non-vote endorsement and feedback macabroid.

*spoilers*

#1. I reach it everytime, don't know what happened in your case.
#2. It works for me both ways.
#3. They're not at the same place at the same time, so there's nothing to react too - Lilith doesn't just wait there either.
#4. Thanks, it was easy to fix both.
#5. That isn't actually a bug nor is it about summons. Did you also get this message: "You can't use that while in combat." If the module thinks you're still in combat you can't use certain doors or other travel objects like rope.

Restarted this mod using latest version, and yes, the bug with Sister Lilian is fixed now. Finished mod this time, reached 4 of 5 endings.

Pros:
1. For the first time I see that the whole "prequel" system actually works, mod nicely clarifies some loose ends from "Angel Falls" without being boring or predictable.
2. It's very easy to finish this mod, but to understand what's going on, you have to replay mod at least twice. A nice diversion from boring linearity of standard approach.
3. Truly non-linear, and very enigmatic.

Cons:
1. It seems that only a dedicated easter egg hunter could truly appreciate this mod, other gamers will just loose interest and spoil the fan by reading readme too soon.
2. Cutscenes were too stiff and lacking camera work (still, it's better than no cutscenes at all).
3. Well, not exactly a con, but... It's not an atmospheric horror any more, it's just an enigmatic, and may be sometimes puzzling, gaming experience.

Bugs:
1. The lich ending is unreachable. Saying to Gwen "I have an unfinished business with lich" results in log message "Unexpected module error", and no cutscene at all.
2. After destroying the Orb, I can't leave to the North, although Cardinal has already removed his spell and before destroying the Orb, I was able to leave without problems. Why I can't do it now?
3. It's strange that during the "good" ending Cardinal and Sister Lillian just stand before the waterfall, without any reaction on Lilith's current presence.
4. Never entered Madame Elorha's wagon before. Killed Lilith, watched the cutscene where Elorha died. Than, for the first time entered the wagon. First, it's possible to hear the roar from now-dead panther. Second, leaving the wagon starts an infinite cutscene where nothing is happening at all.
5. Proto-Golem keeps fighting with a summoned creature even after he says "Malfunction". As a result, even having the key, you can't leave through the door: a message "Nope, can't do that" continues to show, as if the key is not from this door. You have to unsummon your creature, than the key will work.

Still - a great module, intriguing and surprisingly deep, and surely it's worth much more than 800 current downloads.

Things I liked: visuals, music, cutscenes, scripting and CaNdYlAnD.
Things I didn't like: lack of a definite plotline (ran around a lot with no journal entries after second geas task). Also, "lich" ending was very illogical.
Other things (with some spoilers): I didn't notice the golem to drop a key :-( and found out about it only from the walkthrough, *after* I killed Lilith. By the way, killing her was very easy with a wizard, she had no spell resistance or elemental immunities :-)

Thank you for your feedback. I don't have alot of playtesters (in fact this is still sitting in the playtest queue at The Builder's Project Guild). It's also frustrating when I can't duplicate certain bugs. Angel Falls has some sort of camera bug for example. Anyway, I'm going to review your points so thanks again.

Posted by YorgosD at 2007-12-09 09:24:53
Iíve gone through the module and, unfortunately, I must say I am somewhat disappointed.

Not that itís not good, but it seems it needs a little more work. Specifically 1. It needs some testing in order to overcome a few minor bugs and inconsistencies 2. The dialogue should be more developed 3. The combat is too hard. Let me explain.

SPOILERS
1. There at least two occasions which, while not necessary technical bugs, they look inconsistent. First the sorcerer kept repeating the initial dialogue, in spite of the fact that I agreed to help. Perhaps the cause is that I first visited Lilith and considered her offer? Second when I tried to finish the module using the choice ďI have some unfinished business with a lichĒ, instead of visiting the lich, as I expected, I got a cutscene where the camera moved and hid my character behind a tree. Then he was killed by some meteors and afterwards I saw the bishop talking to Lillian about founding Angel Falls (?!?) In addition I think that giving the player the choice to leave so early can make him or her overlook a lot of secrets lurking in this module. Anyway, my point is that (for the first time, probably), you missed a few things and you should go through the testing again.
2. I was disappointed to find out that some interesting characters, like the bard or the gypsy, had no role in the story. Considering that this module is related to Angel Falls, I expected a mystery of some kind (an expectation reinforced by the fact I could ask Helenaís opinion about others, just like the Quartermaster of Angel Falls). Unfortunately, they look more like an effect to give some depth to the village. Iíd love to see these characters develop, and probably get involved in a mystery or quest of some kind. Moreover, it should be a good idea to give the player more insight or emphasis related to Angel Falls (for example, I'd like to know where Lilly came from).
3. My level 9 rogue/level 1 shadowdancer had great difficulty in certain combats. First of all, there was no way I could even scratch the monstrous incest in Candyland. In
addition, I was barely able to take down the golem, and thatís only because I used the acid vial. Unless I missed a trick, it becomes invulnerable to almost any kind of attack as soon it is hit by it. Considering it regenerates, my sneaky rogue and his ice/fire arrows and rapier werenít enough. If there is a trick, at least you should give a hint. By the way I think the same is true about the first test, where itís practically impossible to get the full bonus. A short note stating something like ďIt all began with earth... nature favourites the oppositesĒ should help a lot.
4. And a minor point. I believe that in your walkthrough you should also mention some secrets like the use of the magic beans or the golden goose.
END OF SPOILERS

I think that with a little extra effort, Angel Falls Prelude will become a very good module, and I encourage you to do so. Iím not voting yet, for it would be unfair to do so now, but Iíll eagerly wait for your updates to replay an improved version.

Posted by YorgosD at 2007-12-08 15:12:43
Aaahh... game breaking bug found... a shame...

MINOR SPOILERS
Actually it's the some bug reported by Randalish, DerekJeter etc. The dialogue with Lillian doesnít start at all - she remains silent no matter what you try. Fortunately Iíve not completely forgotten how to script and I think I managed to find a solution and keep playing. It seems that the bug was caused by the come here, go there script functions that (should) initiate the dialogue, though I canít understand how they make any conversation impossible. Anyway, it was fine after I removed the last lines of the script, though this way the dialogue doesnít start automatically.

In addition, I found out that Lillian doesnít work well as a henchman. For some reason she doesnít hear any verbal command (stand here, attack etc.) and simply keeps following and attack. I canít check her inventory either. Thus sheís too vulnerable since the player canít use any tactics with her.

Iím using the latest version, 1.3b.
END OF SPOILERS

Other than this it seems thatís another great work from you. I am especially fond of the visual atmosphere and the music. Iíll be back with more comments after I complete it.

Actually it's my first post on the nwvault boards (after years of downloading activity :) ) and I never thought it'd start this way, but still...

Just started your module, version 1.3b, newly created character, no CEP or other HAKs/overrides. Unfortunately, Sister Lillian is still silent: same bug as reported by DerekJeter, DrMcCoy and others.

Angel Falls is one of the most suspenseful modules on the vault, it'd be a pity if it's prequel will suffer from bugs like that.

Another solid effort from thegeorge. Some weirdness, some mystery, some nice cutscenes.

I did have some problems with repetitive combats in one area and often found myself wishing that some of the NPCs had more to say.

Works for me now. :)

Posted by thegeorge at 2007-10-21 21:48:19
Have you tried the latest version (1.3b)? I've been trying to fix the conversation thing, which is tricky since it always works for me.

Posted by Lomondra at 2007-10-21 15:07:18
When I started I needed to level up because I only used a level 1 char. And I saw all the colors you brought into play with the scrolls, etc. The temple was great, very colorful, and I really like the inventory ghosting when selecting something. Impressive.
But, now the game, after leaving the temple the first time it was so dark and overly foggy, I don't understand, you don't want people to see the trees and other items you place on a screen then why populate it with anything? Ok, seriously, this my not be your doing, it could be my monitor, so I continued.
Going into Blighted Wood is so severely green it was hard to see the outline of anything else, unless of course I tabbed (which isn't very realistic if that's what your trying to accomplish, either massive tabbing or massive green).
Anyway, I guess I was luckier than most because Lillian came up to me, and currently we have made our way into a dwarven mine (Lillian by the way is only white talk but is joined as a henchie) but since all the dwarven miners are all red for no understandable reason, I saved, quit, and came back to read what has happened to others.
When I tried to go in a second time, Lillian did not talk at all, even going into the waterfall area, she didn't come along, never joined or talked.
Are the dwarves supposed to be red? If so, why?
Is Lillian only white talk after the green screen? How can I tell her I'm supposed to save her?
*smile* I have played a few of your mods, and liked them, I am not trying to sound harsh, I just don't know if I'm at a spot where I can continue or if I need to start over. Thank you.

Hmmm...thought I fixed that, still doesn't seem to work for everyone apparently.

I can confirm that no conversation initiates with Sister Lillian (using version 1.3). Then DebugMode workaround works, though.
