Description
Lord Marcenshire from Citadel 424 has summoned all would be heroes of the land to deal with the many problems which have befallen the realms. After many decades of relative peace and tranquility the kingdom of Dortimor has once again been brought into dark times. There are now organized forces of evil and chaos scattered across the kingdom bringing disorder where ever they go. They seem to be on a path to destroy the kingdom and the peace amongst the many citadels of the realms. The local forces have been bogged down in dealing with threats to their immediate surroundings and protecting the citadels while evil and chaos continues to spread throughout the countryside.

One such threat is centered upon economic resources. The Strafos mines north of Citadel 424 have come under attack. An insidious force has killed many miners and forced the remaining miners and a few would be adventurers to hold a sort of “rag-tag” base camp a few kilometers from the Citadel at the base of the mountain path leading to the mine entrance. These forces of chaos seem to be plundering the gold and other resources of the mine. This isn’t the only problem. The miners also believe the invaders have more devious plans.

You are being sent to find the mine and deal with this threat. Locate the base camp in the mountain forest to learn more about this dangerous mission.

Like others have said before, it's a neat short hack-and-slash mod that shines at area design and balance, even though the story is only average. Sadly the fun in playing it is a bit marred by the flawed henchmen system: I think if you let more than one henchman join, the others become henchmen to your henchman through a bug and are not directly under your control. You can still talk to them about their tactics by using the radial menu on their portrait but they don't listen to commands like "Follow" or "Hold". Quite annoying when you tell the party to wait and the sorceress still follows you and gets herself in the front row...

Pros:
-Combat was well balanced for my 3rd level fighter and two henchmen.
-The areas looked good without using any haks.

Cons:
-I'm assuming Sharona didn't write the dialogue, because it appears the writer is not a native English speaker. Even aside from that, the dialogue is sparse and uninteresting.
-The NPC who gave me the quest didn't acknowledge when I finished it. He just repeated his earlier conversation.
-The Henchmen system used in this module is kind of annoying. Also, when my henchmen died, I later encountered them standing around in a tunnel. One wouldn't acknowledge me, and the other said he couldn't work for me. I also found a secret area where a woman was being kept, but all she would say is that she couldn't work for me too.
-There are some details which don't make sense in the context of the game. For instance, why is there a magical sword lying in a pile of rubbish right next to a pair of guards? Surely they'd use it themselves. The Bugbears don't have much in the way of treasure, yet I found a spellbook full of high-level spells simply lying in a tunnel. Things like this break the immersion in the game.
-Backtracking out of the caves when the quest is completed is tedious. A shortcut would have been nice.

Overall: the module was ok, but felt like it needed polishing.

*WARNING POSSIBLE SPOILERS BELOW*

Well i restarted the mod with a lvl 1 char, killed a few wolves than got to the camp, bought a longsword, shield and 3 potions (bout only thing i could afford) went on to talk to the plot NPC and got the quest. From there i decided to get BilBand as my hench and the other guy in chain shirt armor and set out and got my butt handed to me by the boars, i respawned and got back to the camp and found bilband alive but lying down on the floor so i got another set of henchmen, rinse and repeat (read: i died again) once more back to the camp and this time the only NPC i could talk to was BilBand who said i couldn't hire him and the other NPCs i couldn't talk to. Ok i proceeded up the mountain and found the guy that gives you the amulet and than i got to an area with some dead house guards and was ambushed by 2 BugBears and died again.

*END SPOILERS*

IMHO this module lacks polishing, i didn't finish it cause i didn't have much hope of actually succeeding in that attempt.
Oh and as a side note, i agree with "simple" but please don't go to the point that even the merchant NPC only has 1 response to open the buying window, i mean at least give the player the option to say no thanks.
I don't know maybe it's just me, but...*shrugs* i don't think this is my cup of tea, srry.

Shiek2005.

P.S. From what i saw, area design was good :)

i do allow some leeway on equipment just no uber gear. if you stock your PC with some potions this might help you too. i provide very few for balance purposes but if you find yourself needing some assistance life in a bottle is a good option.

Thanks for the tip, i only hired 1 so maybe i'll go for 2 next time :D

SPOILER:

i give you some XP right in the beginning. by the time you leave the camp you should be either level two or only a few wild wolves away from it. three henchmen to choose from too right in the beginning. you can hire all three if needs be. :)

This was just plain fun. Good balanced combat. I was killed in the boss combat area. That was my own stupid fault. An odd bunch of henchmen too but a good selection to choose from. I did find the hidden henchwoman. At that point I really needed her too.

When I first entered the cave and was attacked by a bear and found some treasure I thought I missed something. That was when I realized I was in the wrong cave. Nice diversion!

Thank you very much for a well done Hack N' Slash. I enjoyed it very much. Do you plan on making a sequel? The DM led me to believe so.

This is a nice 1st module. Although not all pro, it shows some detail to actions of NPC's described while they talk. I like that.
It is a small module, no doubt, but this is Sharona's first effort. I like it.

I wanted it to be longer! Also, I think there could have been more things to buy in the shop. My character had extra money, but there was nothing to buy. Otherwise I thought it was a fun dungeon-romp.

@Berfert

I did not use any custom factions. the woman is the same faction as all the humans and henchmen in the module. if you attack any of them they will be hostile towards you. there is no special scripting on the kids to determine if you are a hostile faction. they just run away when you get there. if you do not talk to the woman in the camp and get her quest the one kid you found hostile(see above) will just continue standing there. the only reason i can think for her or the children to be hostile is something involving factional issues. thanks for playing and voting.

anyone find the henchmen in hiding?

I forgot to login and vote before. Not a bad mod for a person 1st but shorter then I like. Only 1 bug that broke a quest.

A pretty good mod but I had 1 problem.

The woman who asks you to rescue her child turned hostile on me after I returned to fill up on potions. Also when I got to the actual rescue 1 child was hostile but the journal said to talk to them. So I attempted to get past the single hostile kid and was attacked. Needless to say there was one dead kid. All the other kids turned hostile but all shouted Thanks and ran off. So I was not ever able to talk to any of them. Back at the camp the mother (I guess) was still hostile and everybody in the camp acted like I had just got there. 1 uncompleted quest for me.

Sharona is no rank amateur, though. Not only is she the Guildmistress of Divide and Conquer: Cormyr, she also learned the module-builders craft at the feet of that old veteran Rich of Forumite, who so unfortunately passed away this january. So it's no big surprise that this module is a cut above most other first attempts I've seen.

The module is a short hack&slash with just the minimum conversations to get you started. You have to fight your way through a tribe of hobgoblins to rescue some kids. The description says to start with character level 1-3, so I tried it with a new lvl 1 barbarian, which worked well enough. He was close to death more than once, so it's definitely not too easy. Overall, the balance seemed good. The boss battle was rather on the tough side, but that was because I had lost all 3 henchmen, and had to fight it out on my own. I doubt I would have survived if I hadn't been smart enough to stock up on potions before entering that room! Potion of Strength *gulp* Potion of Barkskin *gulp* Potion of Endurance *gulp* Potion of Speed *gulp*. Attaaaaack!

Criticisms: The text in the conversations had some typos. That's no big deal in a hack&slash, but if you're planning on making a larger module you should have someone proofread it. I recommend the TBP bug-testing forum.

The henchman system was an unusual mix of the old OC system and the newer HotU system, with the MBHkit's conversation. For some reason, I could only open the backpack of one henchman, the other two used that sucky old method of giving the henchman a bag with the equipment you want to give him. Also, when they got killed, they respawned back in the camp, but refused to come along for more adventuring. Not sure if that was intended. It could be a good idea, since it forces the player to be a bit more careful. But I think I'll recommend using only the HotU system (or MBHkit) in the future.

Overall, this was a very promising module, and I hope there will be more to come in the future! :)

Do go and check it out, folks!

One of the better first attempts I've seen. Some typos. Not too happy with the henchman system used. Nice work with scenery and combat balance. Too short? Well, that just means I'd like to see more from you!
