Title  Versatile Dungeon 0.9.3
Author  maxam
Submitted / Updated  10-31-2009 / 03-28-2010
Category  Tilesets
Expansions  NWN-1.69
Description
A new dungeon tileset!

Includes two types of room (normal, and 'vault') with different height ceilings. Makes use of Raise/Lower to allow for different levels of 'height' within an area.

While more content is coming, please note that the tileset as it now stands is fully functional - you can enter/exit via stairs, all corridor/door/room combinations are catered for, all tiles have a map icon, all of the current geometry/textures are final and not subject to change.

Make sure to run the demo module first to get a feel for the hak!

Please feel free to include this as is or modified in your module-specific haks (single player, multiplayer, or PW).

Please don't include it for re-upload in any combo/mega/all-in-one/et al hak. I understand that it is out of appreciation of this tileset that it would be considered for inclusion, however tilesets included in such haks tend to languish and not be kept up to date with the original version, or get added to/changed, again keeping it divorced from the orginal as well.

I'd much prefer that the ongoing development of my tileset remain in my hands - it is my labour of love.

A great set, the stone walls and stairs are both glorious and frightening! I hope to see this excellent work updated soon.

And here I thought the Classic Dungeon couldn't be topped... well, you've just outdone it, sir! As soon as you sent me the beta, I was hooked. This is a superb set, and so flexible! Bug free, a smaller download, and visually stunning... INCREDIBLE!

I cannot believe I failed to vote for this essential tileset. Sorry, maxam. Simply incredible. THIS is a dungeon!

Great to hear that still persons with ability for that work on NWN 1! I like NWN 1 more than part two, don't know why, maybe you can create maps easier, but that is no good for me as builder! :D
I wait for a ready tileset that's not in forest (like WoRm's SF, but I don't want to build a module that's only in forest...)
There still good outdoor Tilesets but th're don't fit for SF or not ready yet.
Like sixsixsi* Wildlands or Zwerkules NWN2Houses (I think with this you are able to build ready modules, but than you aren't able to use SF). With sixsixsi*'s wildlands I love to build with your two indoor cd and vd but for now wildlands don't much options... missing streams, wallgates asone.

Regards,
Raven_Xan

@ Jedijax:

Wouldn't you rather a new dungeon than a re-skinned one? IMO the Bioware dungeon doesn't survive a re-skin very well - lord knows it's been tried often enough(!)

Thanks for the kind words, but the reason my tileset looks so 1.69 is because I'm using 1.69 textures.

As for Six - he's still alive! (see below).

Thanks very much for the post and I'm really glad you like the tileset - more to come soon!

Ever thought of re-skinning the original Bioware dungeon tileset? Man, it stinks! There have been many attempts to do so over the years,... but man, they stink too! Yeah yeah yeah, I may be rude to the authors, but I think their work doesn't come near to being 1.69 caliber. The only dungeon textures I've seen that could fit the bill would be Sixesthrice's (may he/she rest in peace) and yours...

News to me Baba.

I hadn't made a single CC contribution until after DLA had come and gone. But, hey, thanks for thinking of my work as being such high caliber :)

@ USAgreco66kg:

Thanks for such an encouraging and enthusiastic post/vote!

@ jbaudrand & seekr34:

Thank you!

@ Fleshmelter:

LOL! Thank you! (^_^)

@ baba yaga:

Hey - good to hear from you!

I'm still working on the Sewer tiles - having decided to go with three different 'corridor' styles has proven to be a bit of a nightmare. Once I get the next update out - I'll post some pictures on the CC forum...

Or, if you want to email me - I'll shoot some over to you directly. (^_^)

Hrmm, the voting tool only goes to 10... I need at least a 12... fan-freaking-tastic tileset... as much fun as I've had in the past with classic dungeon, I know I'll find even more enjoyment with this set! Amazing work, as always!

Posted by maxam at 2010-02-03 21:49:01
Thanks for your comments and votes folks!

@ QSW

Thanks for your kind words! (I know it's hard to beleive, but I'm mostly top down when I play too!). Unfortunately I can't take credit for the coffins, they're from the new 1.69 placeables (but they really go with the tileset).

@ Disco

Yah, the stairs do require a bit of fiddling - thanks for your honesty. One thing I hope to introduce later is 'cornering stair' tiles. Currently corridors and stairs can only connect 'head on' so to speak. Ideally they should be able to meet at right angles also. There are some logistical/geometrical problems to overcome in the implementation, though, so they are on the backburner for the moment.

The next update will have stair tiles that end in doors, which should help somewhat.

I'm glad you liked the documentation - there's going to be a lot more of it as this set expands!

In your comment on texturing the "black top sides with stone", I assume you mean the 'backs' of vault rooms? Or do you mean both the black backs and the tops?

To be honest, that's not to my taste - BUT I'll have a look into it - if I've got the UVW set up right on the walls, there could be the option of simply overriding either one or both of the 'black' textures used for the "walls". I could make a third 'black' for the bottom of pits etc, that would not be affected by overriding...

As to the version history - I'm definitely putting one in much as I've included one with the Classic Dungeon. I didn't feel it was worthwhile for the first release. I'm not sure where you saw .89 as that was the private beta release I did before posting to the vault... I'll have a look and see if it's still mentioned in there somewhere... hmmm...

@ CAP 9fires

Thank you! (^_^)

O, forgot to vote.. :D

One remark that I forgot. Can you add an update log. I noticed the hak going from .89 to .90, but I couldn't find any change at all (haks still have the same date).

Posted by Disco at 2010-01-28 03:16:21    Voted 9.50 on 01/28/10
Very nice! It takes a bit of fiddling to get the stairs doing what you want them to do, but it's got a ton of atmosphere. Thanks for the fabulous documentation, btw.

One suggestion: the top of the walls looks a bit strange if you are 'above the ceilings' if you get my drift. Would it be possible to texture the black top sides with stone?

Posted by QSW at 2010-01-22 13:09:23    Voted 10.00 on 01/22/10
This is an awesome tileset Maxam. The multi levels are fantastic, it is rare I play without top down, but I just had to experience your ceilings as my PC moved through the different levels of the dungeon. The detailed coffins are great, and the sounds, creatures, placeables and lighting really set this demo mod off. I can't wait to see what you add to this set, but as it is, it's a fantastic versatile set ;)

Thanks for sharing with us.

And I'd thought the Classic Dungeon Tiles were "everything" I'd ever want ... this set just blows my mind! Wonderful addition to NWN. Who would have ever guessed you could do so much? Again, my thanks for all your work, and thank you for sharing the fruits of your labor. Well Done!
