Title  Scarecrow
Author  Schazzwozzer
Submitted / Updated  10-30-2002 / 04-03-2003
Category  Creatures
Expansions  NWN - 1.29 or lower
Description
This hak pak will add a new creature to your module, the Scarecrow. The hak pak includes the animated creature model, textures, portraits, and 2da changes. Also included within the .zip file is the appropriate Creature Blueprints. Refer to the Readme file for further information.

UPDATE: This latest update (v 1.01) merely adds some polish (a couple minor issues), adds compatibility with Bioware's gnolls (for real this time), and I've also included some snazzy scripts created by Ghool. The scripts simulate the 2E Scarecrow's fascination gaze, an effect that will render the character paralyzed until either the Scarecrow is destroyed or Dispel Magic is cast. These scripts should help make the Scarecrow an unique and deadly opponent, even to characters several levels stronger than the Scarecrow.

Hi, Schazzwozzer. I'd like to ask you if you could make a creature based in your scarecrow model: Jack Skellington, you know him, right? From Tim Burton's "Nightmare Before Christmas". My request is at the Idea Vault of NWVault and it's called "Jack Skellington". Go there if you need to get a picture of Jack. I'd appreciate you'd contact me for me to know if you can make this creature or not (and about other details also), please.

P.S.- As Jack isn't a scarecrow, he doesnt need to be in that scarecrow position when not moving, and he walks upright like a human being, but I think you got that :P.

This is a compilation of the old system into a single score. There were 19 that made this score of 8.63.

loved the creature hak... and the normal erf works fine... but the Ghool one has script errors...

I am using SoU & HotU w/ 1.61 if that helps

For any one interested;
I used this module in my up-coming module, and I've created scripts for this creature that more correctly simulate the dominating gaze effect as per the MM. Let me know if you'd like to attach them to your creature Schazzwozzer, and I can email them to you.

GOD!)

EEEhehe, that's kinda how I went when I saw this. *eccelent*

And TGSofGC, you should really look around now becouse the
GeForce3 cards are practically given away these days as long
as you don't want a S-VHS out port.

Posted by Wolfsong ( ..xxx.xxx ) at 2002-11-03 16:50:00
The main thing I'm after is the resolution of the textures
so that the custom contents looks to be part of the original
game. People who have problem with the DDS format probobly
don't know what I'm talking about as they don't play the
original game with that texture resolution either.

But as said, 512x512 TGA would do the job for all users.

I thought I'd update with my vid card since it seems to be
in question: NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Model 64 Pro (it came with my
compaq when I bought it).

Posted by TGSofGC ( ..xxx.xxx ) at 2002-11-03 05:39:00
@Wolfsong:
Well Umm the dds don't work for me. At least in general I
could provide you with a list of models specifically which
I have skin/texture problems with because of this. Among
them are at least Lolth, the giant snake, the basic horse,
and scwarz first rat pack. Since Schwarz figured out it
fixes the problem if you can just include targas... well it
seems like a simple enough solution to me and not that hard
for a builder save it twice if they want one in dds and
tga. (Also if you don't believe this problem is legit you
should look at schwarz rat pack page, it at least use to
contain about 10-15 posts of people who experienced
the "albino rat" problem.) Finally some of you may have
enough money to go out and buy a new graphics card, but
mine does everything I need it for right now (GTA 3,
Neverwinter Nights, and Civ 3), and I usually have trouble
finding money to eat every night. Hope youtake this into
consideration, ciao.

Just to note, the Scarecrow uses a 512x512 targa file,
however, I also included a 256x256 targa within the zip, in
consideration for those who have lower-end systems. All
they need to do is add it to the .hak file and the
Scarecrow should potentially cause less slowdown than it
might otherwise, and there shouldn't be any terribly
noticeable difference in texture quality.

Oh, and thanks to everyone for the praise! I hope you guys
can put the things to some good use. :)

Posted by Wolfsong ( ..xxx.xxx ) at 2002-11-01 19:02:00
Yes, they look better. Or it's not that they are DDS files
that make them look better that I wrote in the end part.
It's that they are 512x512 instead of the 256x256 files that
are in TGA format in the original game. But if modders only
use 512x512 TGA textures, that would be just as good for me.
It's just that they get smaller if you compress them to DDS.
But I got DSL so I don't care about the size.

Posted by Ulef ( ..xxx.xxx ) at 2002-11-01 15:53:00
Hey Wolfsong, does DDS just look better or something? btw
I have GeForce 2 MX and I can easily run DDS.

Posted by Wolfsong ( ..xxx.xxx ) at 2002-11-01 10:52:00
I know there is a differens when playing with models that
only has the TGA files as I can see that the resolutions is
lower on those objects/creatures then on the rest of the
environment. Maybe it's just me, that is used to work with
graphics that see it, I don't know. I've also done some
tests with the tileset I'm retexturing, and just by using it
in the toolset I can see if it uses the DDS or TGA file. And
if there is a DDS, it will use it. I can do a test to see if
it will select the TGA file if i set the graphic settings
lower, to try and simulate an older graphic card.

Can't simulate one without DDS support though, as mine has
it. For the people that don't have it, I say have to say buy
a new card. Because the GeForce3 cards and up has it, and if
you have an older card the GeForce3 it's time to get the
most out of the programs on the makret today.

BioWare did only include TGA files with the kobolds/malar,
but they are in 512x512, the resulution that DDS files use
in NWN. So the slower computers have no option on those.
Becouse of that they didn't need to include DDS files and
TGA files. So that's a solution. Use only 512x512 textures.
I didn't look at this HAK before this discution so I dodn't
know what resolution you use, but it's not this HAK that it
was about. This was a general statement.

I'll do some more tests and get back on this for the community.

Great job, men! This loock very scary.

I love it and I try to use in all my mods

That is an excellent scarecrow! I like the way you designed
it, it looks really rustic and the texture fits very well.

Posted by Schazzwozzer ( ..xxx.xxx ) at 2002-11-01 08:05:00
Wolfsong,

Can you confirm that, if a hak pak contains both a DDS file
and a targa, the game will, upon failing to use the DDS,
use the targa instead? I have not been able to get it to
work as such and nobody within the custom content forum has
ever been able to confirm either, when asked. In my
experience, the game will attempt to use the DDS files
regardless of whether or not they actually work.

Also, I am only following a precedant established by
Bioware themselves in only including targa files (they only
included targas for the kobolds and malar panther). It is a
method that is proven to work for everyone, and so, I use
it.

Besides, DDS is a somewhat lossy compression.

Posted by Wolfsong ( ..xxx.xxx ) at 2002-11-01 07:30:00
@TGSoGC

DDS files work fine as textures, actually they are better at
512x512, you just don't see them in a model viewers out
there as they don't support the format. But they work in
game as long as you have a decent graphic card. And the game
suses both the TGA and DDS file. DDS close to the PC and TGA
further from.

So in my opinion all modles hould have both DDS an TGA
textures... Not hard as you do fix the DDS texture and then
when it's done you only create a small version of it in TGA.

Nice!
I was hoping for some cool halloween content, and this most
certainly doesn't disappoint. Schazzwozzer you rock, loved
the rats and keep up the great work.
ps. I love the fact that I can now download this and know
that the txtures will work, its amazing how many people
only include dds or what ever with there models, which I
guess just give me the albino models.
KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!
pss. Ummmm can we maybe get a few more things with
the "jack o' lanter" head. Say as a placeable and as
a "mask" similar to the animal masks released a long time
ago. Also it would be nice to have it so it could be
carried around, maybe an npc or 2 with it in there hands.
