Matt Chat Review(link is external)
Welcome Adventurers,
The Archmage Khelben summons the Heroes of Waterdeep, slayers of the Beholder Xanathar, for another mission. Strange things are happening in the Darkmoon Forests near Waterdeep, centered around the Temple Darkmoon. People have been disappearing and human remains have been found in shallow graves in the old Graveyard of forgotten heroes.
Before contacting you, he had sent his trusted scout, Amber, to investigate, but she has disappeared and has not been heard from in three days
Khelben Blackstaff sends you to investigate the dreaded Temple Darkmoon. You must explore the temple, deal with its inhabitants, avoid traps, and battle monsters to discover the temple's evil secrets.
Update: Aug 13th of 2021 - Mark of Darkmoon Fix! Really sorry about the Mark of Darkmoon issue, this came up much later, and was something that the New Enhanced Edition broke and did not like how the script was formatted.
Warning: The Older HAK files are no longer complatible with the Enhanced Edition, you must download the newer files on this page.
Older Outdated News: After two long years of hard work we are proud to say we can finally present Eye of the Beholder II: The Legend of Darkmoon.
Please make sure you download both the mod and the HAK files needed to play this mod. Our mod is NOT compatible with the community CEP.
EOB II is compatible with the Enhanced Edition of NWN.
We would like to thank the community for all of their interest, support and the great feedback given to us over the past two years and for all of the encouragement we have received along the way to continue making this mod.
The mod should provide many hours of fun and challenging game play and hopefully bring back some fond memories from long ago, (for those who may have played the original game released by Westwood in 1991).
It’s been a worthwhile trip.
So Thank you and I hope you enjoy the mod.
Update: Aug 20th 2013
Our mod caught the attention of Kevin VanOrd over at GameSpot. Kevin recently played through the mod and gave his impressions about his experience along with an interview he had with me on it. Here is the link to that interview.

So I finally got a chance to play this and I'm a little disappointed. Made it to the Hall of Riddles and had to stop. Played through on single player and after finishing the catacombs I ran back to the gypsy camp to sell some things and buy more potions. Pretty sure I sold some of the items needed to get through the riddles and now the store won't open so I can buy them back. Furthermore, I couldn't access the solution book to find out if I was right about what I needed. Overall, it was a cool module. Wish I could have finished.
Hi Troy, sorry you had some issues. We don’t allow any plot items that are related to the quest in the mod to be sold. Are you sure you didn’t drop them on the ground by accident? I’ve gone through the mod and looked over all of the items to make sure you can’t sell any, I did not find anything out of the ordinary.
We have released all new versions now, please read the main part of the page here on how to get the new versions.
What? Why so outdated 1.0 version here? No wonder that it's buggy.
@ TroyOleson:
The 'not re-opening stores' bug was fixed in version 1.1 - as we can check by reading the comments on the ign (R.I.P.) vault page:
http://web.archive.org/web/20131025045531/http://nwvault.ign.com/View.ph...
Apumx: "Aengus and laurel stop selling me things now."
Dark: "The two vendors selling items has been fixed in the new fix (...)"
You cannot grab this version from rolovault unfortunately - as the snapshot had been taken before even v1.0 was uploaded: ftp://neverwintervault.org/rolovault/projects/nwn1/modules/6375 but...
...there is even more recent version (1.2) available on: www.moddb.com/mods/eye-of-the-beholder-ii-ledgend-of-darkmoon :)
@ darks:
Why not to upload the most recent version here, on the new vault?
And... why not to create the separate project page for your own famous Eye of the Beholder 1: ftp://neverwintervault.org/rolovault/projects/nwn1/modules/4028 (v.5 released in 2012 and compatible with NWN HotU 1.69), instead linking (related projects) to probably inferior (though still great) and quite outdated (2005; NWN 1.65) EOB Mk2 by Wolfspirit?
New version 2.3 and 5.3 are both avalible now on this site and the mod is now intergrated into Steams NWN Enhanced Edition.
I added a small note to the bottom of the description inviting potential players to see the MODDB page setup by the author for the latest version. I hope that'll do with clearing confusion.
Hey everyone, Sorry for my absence. Yes I have moved the mod over to MODDB which is why I have not been around. And yes that version is a more up-to-date version. As for that problem one person had with the vendors being gone. Yes that was an issue early on. And it was fixed. Also, the issue he brought up about an item he sold or discarded. Anything that was plot related is set to plot. Those items cannot be sold at any time. If you discarded it. Then that's on the player. There's a reason why vendors do not buy plot items. Because they are game related items that have some meaningful use in the game.
I will have to rethink adding a newer version of the mod here if there is enough interest in my doing it. From what I have seen over the past two years, there has not been. It seems NWN is a dying game and not a lot of people have much interest in playing an older game with a dated engine.
Another reason why I have not considered making EOB 3.
If anyone needs to reach me for mod related reasons, please email me. My email is in the archives of the mod. Or come to MODDB and reach out to me.
Thanks,
I appreciate your modding, darks, though I'm not a legion of players you and others deserve :D
Hey werelynx. I went over your list of bugs and fixed everything you sent me except for a few items. that I had no idea where those were. your description didn't give me enough detail on the location. if you get a chance pls email me so we can talk more.
Thanks,
Sure emailed you.
A link to "MODDB" please.
It's hyperlinked in the Vault Note.
"VAULT NOTE - For the most up to date experience of this module, please visit its MODDB page (link is external)"
please do consider updating the latest version here as well. Even if only a few people see it and play it then it will still be more players.
As far as EoB3 goes. I think the original was too much of a flop to justify redoing it.
Better to take EoB2 through the same Upgrade/Update cycle that EoB1 got. My tiny group of gamers has gotten a LOT of enjoyment out of your work. I promise what you have built is appreciated
Why not just upload it here, too?
Also, it's legend not ledgend (moddb title page).
Looking forward to giving this a try..
Rick asked me to upload 1.3 here, so here it is :)
Am I blind or does this module not even come with a readme, one which credits custom content authors? (or did they create all the CC in this module?)
The read me is in the eye_of_the_beholder_ii_cluebook.zip download
Eew. PayPal at the top of readme.
This is all I see in the readme:
More thanks go out to anyone else that had anything to do with creating added content for Neverwinter Nights, I have used a lot of very nice added content and I apologize to those that recognize their work and did not get credit for it in my docs here.
The guy did not credit a single CC author. Why not? That's why I'm asking, is the CC their original work? What is the forest tileset they used, f.e?
I see what you mean. I opened eotb2-armory.hak with BioWare's Hak Pack Editor and the Title is Depheant's Armoury II - implies that credits were due.
Thanks for that, Suzaral. Just to be clear, I'm not trying to police anything here. I may end up reviewing this on my blog so it helps to know what's what when making an assessment. I also think that forest tileset is great and if it's not their work then the artist should be explictly credited, along with any others. That seems reasonable to me, because otherwise one is taking implicit credit for another's work (the general, quoted "thanks" does not suffice). In addition, I did not think the rebundling of other ppl's haks/content was allowed, but maybe they got permission from all these authors? Aielund Saga and Swordflight installation (f.e) requires the user to visit the specific page of the CC (and explicitly credits author in readme), so as to make player aware of and appreciate CC employed (and maybe cause them to vote for and comment on the CC page, as I have done with Swordflight's employed CC).
Well, Rolo got credited. So a SINGLE CC author was credited, but not any other apparently.
I wasn't counting those who created specific content FOR the EoB module - they did a good job of listing those, by the looks of things. But yeah, any idea what that forest tileset is?
Maybe: http://neverwintervault.org/project/nwn1/hakpak/tileset/wild-woods-v07-w...
Yep, that's definitely it! Didn't realize it had a non-snow version. Wow.
one of the versions I played through had a boatload of credits at the end where the Bioware Credits play normally. It had content creators, playtesters, and various other people listed. It seemed like a very thorough list.
I am not sure about the current version but the ones that wre out near the end of the playtesting were comlpete on thanking a ton of people.
I think the ending movie is from the first part of EoB :/
The author/s do thank a ton of ppl - from their own team. Six's Wild Woods is amazing and a big "selling point" for anyone's module (it's flagship CC), and yet he is not credited. That's just lazy, I'm sorry.
Anyway, I played this module and found it "ok". Not good enough for Pay Pal at the top of a readme, though. And I'm not rating it when credit is not given, when it's due.
@Lilura
Apparently you have no idea the amount of time and effort and work that it took to make these mods. If I didn’t give someone credit it wasn’t that I didn’t want to. I even stated in the read me that I apologized to any that recognized their work and gave them thanks.
All credit was going to be given to anyone’s work we used. But we were not able to get the end credits video created like we wanted to. It was a matter of time and not having anyone else around to help get the game to the finishing point. For you to base your opinion on the mod and say what you did really isn’t for you to say.; it’s up to the modders of those mods to call me out. not you!!
Which by the way, not one of them ever said one thing to me about our using their work. So apparently they had no issues with it.
And on top of that much of the mods we used were from our previous mod that we had permission to use and those modders were given full credit. Including the Armor and Sword mods and much more.
Finished this today. Not as good as EOTB1 but it's so faithful to the original game (Legend of Darkmoon) that any problems I had with the module would have been just as acute with the original. Waaaay too many teleporter & pressure plate puzzles. Made things very tedious at times. Also, too many Potions of Vitality (Potions of Heal). Never felt I had to be careful or smart about reasource managment. However, I think the presentation of this module was excellent. Rick Francis and his team did a fantastic, polished, and bug-free job, meeting certain challanges to get EOTB2 working in the NWN engine faithfully so if I was just basing my score on that, this would get a 10/10. This module feels like an official expansion. But the original Westwood game itself is flawed, imo, compared to other AAA RPGs of the era. The ending of the game was rather anti-climatic - it took just one attempt to kill Dran even in his dragon form, and I was disaapointed to see no cut scene or epilogue. Dran just dies and...nothing. No fade to black, no congratulations from my archmage sponsor or the officials at Waterkeep. Just nothing. Never experienced that before in an RPG. Or did I encounter a bug? 8/10.
Well, it's just as the first except you're inside the dungeons of a temple instead the sewers... I guess it would be a beautiful adventure only if someone likes to wander aimlessy for hours inside dungeons.
p.s. But that of course isn't fault of Dark or anyone of his team, but the original creators of the adventure. The module itself is very well made.
you know, there's nothing stopping you from revisiting this mod and making the tweaks that would boost the polish a bit. After all, NWN may be getting a new lease on life with the EE version that is coming. There'd be no pressure to release at a set time. Even if it took a year to do it would be great to have.
just thinking out loud (in text)
Simple question - starting with Lvl 1 chars ? or higher levels possible ?
i think minimum level is 10 to start
Excellent mod, but there is one thing that I found which I would love to see fixed
during your adventures you meet with Sara who is looking for her sister Anya
after finding anya and resurrecting her i went back to Sara with Anya in my party and only has the options for Anya being dead, it would have been nice to have the dialog for anya being alive and in my party
This was very different than the first EOB but it resembled it in many ways too. Both stripped completely, which I hate as much at Trixter! I felt both were overly contrived and relied too much on having to refer to the Walk Through constantly. I much prefer just playing the module and not having to worry that you were always missing something hidden that could change the course of the adventure adversely, or just shut you down completely! I am now in the Silver Tower and have just given up after getting killed by tiles! The henchperson interface was very good, the gear not so much as it was pretty much underpowered for the baddies tyhat you must face. You can have two henchies at a time but outfitting them fully was a bit of challenge. No merchant after you enter the temple, although I suppose you could make a long run back their Gypsy camp in the Forest if you really wanted to. My inventory was pretty much full up with items that supposedly I just had to carry around just in case! Too much complicated stuff to do for me, at least. Very well done, but not for me. Some do like this type of affair as the reviews show...
Both EOBs are adaptations of much, MUCH older computer games, from a time when such were unforgiving mazes similar to the boardgames that inspired them. Whenever you see the mention of a module being an adaptation, you should check the source. Some are clearly tagged as PnP modules, while others cite the videogame they are adapting. If they are old games or PnP, chances are they won't be your speed, especially when it comes to D&D adaptations.
As I play offline and by myself(!) I cannot do the PnP type of offerings, of course. And I believe you have pointed out previously that the PW's of the Vault are also not the greatest for this style of play, although I have had some with okay adventures found. I love a good henchie interface because of this and am always on the lookout for some useful and fun(custom) gear too! Thanks for your feedback, Jedijax.
Hi Nails,
sorry I hadn't seen this earlier. I do understand our feeling on the difference of the game, but you also have to understand that this is a conversion of the original game in almost every way. except of course the view, since NWN uses an isometric point of view.
As for the merchants, yes. there is only the one outside in the forest. I don't think I need to really explain why since no one would really be allowed in the Temple selling items. the Temple guards would not allow such a thing and would have captured them and imprisoned of killed them.
As for the gear, you really don't have to haul all of that gear around, much of it is just a cosmetic look that when you see them using it, they drop it. not all or every creature, but many of them do. You really have to pace yourself with the gear and decide what's really worth carrying around and dropping.
Appreciate you [playing the mod, and giving your feedback, its appreciated.
Disappointed that the character I played through eob1 got item stripped.
Yeah, sorry about that. Was done because the HAK files are differant and dont contain all of the same textures and items. So it would cause many isuses in the game.
Ok, makes sense, thanks for taking the time to explain.
I've downloaded EotB II from within NWN(E) and also dowloaded, unzipped and copied all of the hak files from the vault to the hk folder within the game's directry and have started to play, both with a new character and also with the character that finished EotB I. Look forward to playing on.
A ffww initial observations:
(1) My character from EotB I, while stripped of all his possessions, retained all of his GP. Seven million GP can be a considerable advantage when outfitting a character.
(2) Having begun to play, I saved the game after levelling up my character on the first level of the Inn, then exited the game.
When I went to play again, the game window was all black. Pressing any of the function keys, e.g., "I" for inventory, the appropriate box showed up on the screen. But the rest of the screen was black, and I was not able to do anything to get the inn's visuals to display. This happened with both old and new characters and made it impossible to start play where I had left off.
Only when I had got the character down the stairs and into the next level of the inn, and then saved the game would the visuals display properly after the game was shut down and then restarted.
Is this a bug or have I done something wrong in installation? Other commenters do not seem to have encountered this.
(3) It would be nice to have a hotkey as way of skipping through the cut scenes.
When one has to start over many times, as I had to do to get past tthe initial level of the inn, having to sit through the cut scenes is a travail.
(4) This is a phiosophical question. And I am pretty sure I know the answer. (And I know that, in designing the game you have towork withing the parameters of the game's engine.) But still.....
Why are all the body choices of female characters in NWN watermelon-boobed and thick-thighed? And why do all the male characters have exaggerated crotch packs? I know this is fantasy land but It would be nice to be able to choose a relatively normally endowed character physique.
(5) I haven't looked at the hints file yet, or any maps that might be available. Would I be correct to assume that the ones in the Vault are those from the original game?
Look forward to delving further when time permits.
You mention the hk folder. That's part of the game installation, which shouldn't be used for installing modules.
I suggest that you back out all the files that you've installed manually,
In theory, if you start the module from the so-called Community tab, nwsync should take care of everything.
If that doesn't work, then use NIT or follow this guide to install the Vault version, starting a new game from the Local tab.
Thanks for responding.
I deleted the game from within NWN(EE) and then reinstalled (both from within the community tab).
I should clarify that I play the game entirely in local mode, not on Steam or in GOG.
Started again from scratch in local and ran into the same problem again:
Saving the game from within the Inn's bedroom level, then exiting the game (and NWN) altogether, then restarting NWN and trying to load the saved game results in an all black game window. Neither key movement nor mouse movement gets any response on the screen.
I also saved the new game (on the reinstalled game) after descending to the ground level of the Inn. Exiting the game altogether and beginning and loading the ground floor save, the Inn shows up as it is supposed to and the game can be played.
However, going back up to the bedroom level of the Inn results in the same black sceen and the same non-responsive movement tries. (i.e., impossible to back out the door/stairs.)
All of the sub-windows (Map, Inventory, Character, etc.) show up when the appropriate key is pressed.
I have to conclude this is a graphics issue, in which a saved game or a return to Inn level 2 does not make the correct graphics call in the game engine?
Might this be a screen reolution issue? (I've tried it in both full screen (Maximize) and the slightly smaller window in which I play (Reduce down) with the same result.)
Or might it be an intentional game design (i.e.,no going back to the Inn's second - bedroom - once it is exited?
! I just noticed that the game version installed from the community tab is V. 2.2, whereas up top, there is reference to a v.2.3. Could this be the issue?
I think this is an issue with your MyDocuments folder where the NWNEE folder is at. Im betting you might have some files in the override folder? check it and see. Othe then that I really dont have an answer. If you are really wanting to start from scratch. try renaming that folder and starting up the game and see what happens. i think this might fix your issue.
Thanks again for taking the time to review.
Nothing in the override directory. I tried renaming it but problem persisted.
I did, however, find this in the logs directory from last night.
"[Wed Feb 1 17:00:43] Loading Module: 000511 - T-Inn\Eye of the Beholder II Legend of Darkmoon
GOG: Authentication failed: 2"
Looks to me like there might be some sort of interface check on the GoG missing.
I will try it logged on to GoG and see if that makes a difference.
In any case, I will play on and if the problem exists only at the very first level, then is is not something to cause much loss of sleep.
That Gog message appears on every log, all the time - even for those of us who didn't buy the game from Gog - so unlikely to be the problem.
I can only conclude there is a problem either with the hardware/software on my laptop or else somewhere in the game code that does not permit the graphics from the top level of the Inn to get loaded when a saved file is loaded. (My conspiracy paranoia even suggests a sneaky Microsoft ploy to get me to go to W11.)
If I I am the only one with this issue, it is not a general problem that needs further addressing.
I can play around it.
Tks again for your time.
