The flail and sling were animated in game. The Balor whip model apparently was too, since the "Data" folder contained a "lod-merged" zip file with "w_devilwhip_D2h_..." animations.
But why didn't the whip work at all?
This "tutorial" documents my findings and what I did to get it working in the end. It however requires the reader to have some knowledge about custom content creation and other technical stuff.
