This is an OnActivate tag-based script which when called checks if the PC is wielding a staff or other long item.  If so and the PC is near a detected trap, then the PC will prod the trigger and hopefully harmlessly set off the trap.

To Use:

Import the erf file.  It contains the scripts, an NPC creature blueprint and a sample item blueprint.

Give the PC access to the item which has an unlimited use unique power (self) with the tag "staff_trigger".  When the PC uses the widget, if they are not wielding a correct item, they will be told that they need to wield a correct item.  Once wielding a staff or similar long item and they use the widget, the PC will look around at nearby detected and active traps.  If the PC is within a short distance of the trap, they will prod the trap with their staff.  Prodding the trap will set off the trap.  If the prodding item is non-magical, it may be damaged by the trap.  Magical items resist damage.  If items take too much damage, they will be destroyed.  If the trap set off is an area-of-effect trap, the PC may still take damage.

Technical Info and alternatives:

The "staff_trigger" script can be called by using the tag-based scripting described above.  It can also be called as an Instant PC Tool.  The tool scripts are "x3_pl_tool##" where ## represents a number 01-10.  If you know how to add PC Tools to your module, save-as the "staff_trigger" script to whichever of the "x3_pl_tool##" scripts you wish it to be.  The grant the Instant Tool to the PC.

 

The script checks for any of the following items wielded.  If you don't want one of these, they can be commented out in the script.

quarterstaves

magic staves

greatswords

tridents

double axes

scythes

two bladed swords

magic rods

Process:

The PC needs to be pretty close to use the ability.  The sample item is a widget that can be used from inventory, while they can wield any particular prodding item.

The script checks for the nearest trap and sees if it has been detected yet and if so, if it still is active.  Then it also checks if the PC is close enough to it.

If all of these conditions are met, then the PC will "prod" the trap trigger.

Prodding involves a creature object to be created, named "end of the <item>" and sent into the trigger, or to use the trapped object or door.  After a few seconds, the object is removed.

The creature has an OnDam script that will check the damage given to it against a variable saved on the wielded item.  If the item is non-magical, this variable will be adjusted to reflect the additional damage.  If the total damage is too much ( defaults to 20, but can be modified by variable "ProdDamMax" on the module object) the item used will be destroyed and any additional damage will be transferred to the PC.
