IMPORTANT! Do not use with NwN EE!
If you buy a new copy of NWN and want to play custom modules, it's advisable to apply this rebuild to patch to release 1.69.
Bioware has taken down the NWN website and the critical rebuild downloads are now difficult to find.
I've posted them here just in case anyone needs it.
Hope it helps! Thanks to The_Krit for the links!
INSTRUCTIONS:
If you have NO expansions installed you need the file named "NWN Critical Rebuild".

That's all the critical rebuild files from the NWVault English page, but I hear there are other files out there (e.g. server rebuilds), so please use the NWN1 content request forum here to ask for more if you need it.
Thank you for adding this, but I also think you need to adjust the description for thw HotU update as also requiring SoU, meaning that it is the ONLY file needed for most folks, as it currently stands, your links are a bit confusing as to what is truly needed.
Also, if possible, you should split the groupings up into Mac, all versions, Linux all versions, and Windows all versions. Just to make it clearer what is what.
What about: http://neverwintervault.org/patches
?
So, what you have here is a verbatim port of what was on NWVault.
I've suggested how site admins might like to tidy this up on the Proleric's Migrations thread - for now I'm focussing on transferring old content as-is.
Sorted DL's intp some sort of logical order at least :D
(by OS then Expansion)
My Avast antivirus repeatedly flags the "no-expansions" version of the exe (for windows) as malware and fails the download.
Can someone check into the cleanliness of that file please?
Thanks!
I scanned the file with Emsisoft. Malwarebytes and AVG. No malware found.
Hmm strange I can't download any rebuild patches. But any other website downloads and other things from this site are able to successfully download.
It always stop at 38.8 mb before failing.
Can you download larger files from other sites? If so, which file are you trying to download? The most commonly used is HotU Windows, which I can download with no issues.
I can still confirm the same thing. My avast antivirus is stopping the download of 169HotU at about 10 kb and flagging this file as malware (Win32:Evo-gen [Susp]).
Edit: users of avast, you have to disable the shields to download these files. Avast considers them -- for whatever reason -- to be suspicious, resulting in a false positive. Right click the little orange avast icon in the system tray (this assumes windows prior to 8), where you get the option to disable all shields for a period you specify. Just remember to turn them back on!
Edit2: Remember to leave the shields OFF while unpacking and installing the update file. Avast can be annoyingly over-zealous and will quarentine the entire file even during unpacking, and you'll have to download it again.
Jonan, here. I was having the exact same problem with Avast flagging the NWN patch installer packages as "malware." I got in touch with Avast by submitting a False Positive report, and have been able to download the patches no problem as of 27.04.15.
I got a new pc 2 days ago. Win 8.1 HP desktop, have tried my NWN complete and old Diamond copy, with HOTU 1.69 crit rebuild. Still wont open game, not even before patch, nor after.
Worked okay on old Emachine with XP home, with cep 2.3. Along with Inf Dungeons, Pirates of Sword Coast and Wyvern Crown installed.
Is there a specific error message you get?
Have you tried setting compatibility mode to XP?
okay
I had to install this, to use the toolset with GOG.com version. I compared it to a vanilla GOG.com install, and noticed, the data directory is 3.2 gigs with this installed, and GOG.com only is 2.9GB. It seems like the GOG.com version ships with only the data from a previous patch, it is missing functions that were added in 1.67 (SetName,GetName...) and does not have BASE_ITEM_TRIDENT, and in general it seems GOG.com isn't shipping the game with a complete 1.69 patch installed. You can verify it for yourself by installing the game with and without the patch and notice that the GOG.com version is missing quite a lot of content.
This is true of every commercial version of NWN. You have to buy it, then patch to 1.69.
Back in the day, this was a good deal, because Bioware gave us all that downloadable patch content for free.
Given all the time elapsed gog.com could at least make their install truly full.
Is this update cumulative? I have diamond with all the expansions, downloaded HOTU and the 1.71_4 patch, currently getting unexpected program shutdown error though.
The 1.69 critical rebuild is the last official Bioware release.
So, you need to install Diamond Edition, then apply the 1.69 critical rebuild.
That will ensure you can run the official campaign and custom modules as intended.
1.71 is an unofficial patch. If you know why you want it, install it after the 1.69 critical rebuild. It's not a requirement. I've heard that it fixes some minor issues with the game, but might cause some problems, too.
Don't even think about it. EE is a later version than 1.69, which doesn't need a rebuild.
I just got the GOG version, does it still require the 1.69 Critical Rebuild, and if so, which one should I use.
I have installed the EE version (not diamond) if that makes a difference.
IMPORTANT! Do not use with NwN EE!
The patch is only required for version 1.69. EE is a later release, so this patch is not required for EE, and might be positively harmful.
I'm trying to install 1.69 but I get an error: "Neverwinter Nights is not found. Please reinstall the game from the original CD-ROM and try again." This is not the Steam version of the game, I dug out my old CD and want to run it on Windows 10.
Nevermind, this patch of NWN1 and I'm trying to run NWN2 lmao
A spot of bother as after downloading it seems to crash my game as soon as it boots from the launcher, should i attempt a reinstall?
@Error404 if you have purchased EE, don't install this patch. If you have an earlier version, such as Diamond, you do need this patch. You might need to tell your AV to treat NWN as an exception. Reinstall NWN if necessary, then try again. If it still fails, please give more detail of your OS and the exact steps taken.
I am working to finish HeavensGate3: Pirates of the Gold Coast. I built it initially many years back and planned on using 1.69 HotU critical update along with Diamond pack. I have found that the most stable. My question is, now that EE is out, what would you suggest I do on release (which should be by Dec. 15th)?
I am hearing EE will work with older modules, but I have Diamond Pack and HotU critical update 1.69 as I built this.
Thank you,
If you decide to keep the 1.69 build, test it end-to-end in EE. it may work perfectly but if there are minor glitches, remember to fix them in the 1.69 toolset, so that it remains playable in 1.69.
I've done that with my older modules, to help 1.69 players, though the newer ones are in EE because I want to use some of its new features.
P.S. This discussion really beings in the forum.
i don't like 1.69 patch, much more enemies, they are stronger, but rewards same as before, after playing this version i downgraded my game
I'm pretty sure you imagnined that, the patch doesnt make monsters harder, it just fixes the things GoG somehow missed patching the game.
"IMPORTANT! Do not use with NwN EE!"
This is just plain Hilarious.
If you have EE installed AND DIamond, it will still patch Diamond just fine, with no effect on EE.
If you DONT have Diamond, then it just wil abort.
They are technicly two ENTIRELY DIFFERENT GAMES and the patch knows this.
NWN EE and Diamond can Co-Exist just fine on the same PC.
