The original Zork, for those who haven't played it at least once (or ten, or twenty) times, was one of the first big hits in the adventure/role-playing genre. Released in 1981, Zork I was a text adventure in which you, a nameless, faceless, genderless adventurer set out to find fame and fortune in the ruins of the Great Underground Empire. These days, 'text adventure' sounds pretty bland (I mean, come on - imagine NwN with no graphics), but the nifty part twenty years ago was the fact that the computer understood commands in vaguely natural language. You typed 'GET SWORD' or 'KILL TROLL' or 'EAT TREE', and the computer understood (for very small values of 'understood'). Well, those days have come and gone. Now, natural language interfaces occasionally understand prepositions, and games without graphics and sound have gone the way of the zoot suit. So, to bring the grandfather of them all up-to-date, I thought it would be nice to see Zork in glorious 3D color. |

Migrator Note: Please do not mistake this as a duplicate entry as there are two different conversions of Zork 1 by different people.
hey!
have you played this one?
Can you recommend it in comparison to chaosQueen's version?
Is there combat in the module?
I have not played either one yet as I download modules faster than I can play them. However I do know that the one by ChaosQueen requires CEP and this one does not use CEP at all, which is the main reason I can think for having both on the site as the people who use CEP will probably want the CEP version, and the people who do not use CEP can play this version. :)
Ah, the old Zork I module I see! This one wasn't too bad, really. Whilst not as complete as mine (though still complete as in you can play it from beginning to end)... it did lay a lot of the groundwork for what became my version of Zork I, and served as a good source of inspiration when I was designing mine. Like Sachie said, this one is perfect for those who don't have CEP and mine is ideal for anyone who has the CEP. Both are (if I might say so) excellent conversions of the classic Zork game! Mine has some added stuff to it too, some puzzles and traps that weren't in the old Zork text adventure game in addition to everything that IS in it and then some. (Though nothing that isn't well suited to the Zork setting, naturally!) Whilst this one is just a basic, nuts and bolts conversion that sticks to the main quest of Zork I and doesn't differ much in spots. Visually, both are very different too. This one is bare basics, with some custom content, though not as much as my version uses, which will appeal to those who, as stated, do not have CEP. Also, the latest version of mine was tested the most recently, and is pretty much bug free. It's been a while since I played this old verison, but I think this one wasn't buggy either, so that's good too. And there you have it, that's the info on this version and my version of Zork I, for those interested in delving into the Great Underground Empire. ;)
Thanks for the review.
