Enslaved by a Mad Wizard on a quest to resurrect a God, our hero returns yet again to Waterdeep and the Undermountain, to face both heroes and villains of an epic level. Reworked based on suggestions from the community, The Pawns of Darkness is the second module of the Shadow’s Quietus series (the first being The Shadow Queen). This module is intended for a single player of 30th level, and was originally entered as part of the NWVault competition for expanding Hordes of the Underdark. |

It's worth noticing one should play the modules in following order: SoU > SQ1 > HotU > SQ2 > ...SQ3
I have skipped HotU.
There are evidences that SQ3 was planned. I can't find it though. If anyone sees it I would love to play it. Author suggested it would be made for NWN2 though.
Quite a nice feature of the module is that it removes non-dropable flag from all items. Another nice thing is that it features several companions from the HotU.
Bugs:
- typos: "Jentered"&"wrong. nothing" - Johanna; "The balde of Twighlight Doom" - item name; "h uman" - A beginner's geography lesson (book); "extange"&"demiclich" - Mist Mephits; "all"(should be uppercase)&"None"*should be "Nine") - True names and the Unbound; "Teh Rhyme" - Hanne the Sage; "no"(should be "know") - Sall; "expiations"&"Underountain" - Lady Alathene Moonstar; "Dagaon" - Dagon Journal Entry; "you're"(should be "your") - Demon (aqitocrun);
- can't hire Johanna, often the following script is not working properly. I failed to get her quest since she didn't follow me and thus did not acknowledge my progress and thus did not start quest as walkthrough suggested. Sometimes you can't hire Wald.
- Unique non-sellable items cost 0GP to upgrade at smith. Sometimes smith won't give any gold for removing properties on such items.
- Umbreigior's Green Shield is described as blue.
- In crystal maze myrmidon automaton killed NPC called "experience"
- 4 of the mighty warriors in maze are mute (can't progresss on those paths if you don't manually attack them, thankfully it does not brake the game)
- Halaster yellow scroll says it gives 25k XP but gives only 20k
- Smithy gives gold for "no properties" removal
- can't enchant arrows
- Slavery in the ancient empire book refers to Thay, Rom and Greece
- on of the lines of Hanne the Sage in Zundbridge and Gaustaris is repeated
- docks enclose a ship, so how does it leave harbor :D
- Darrenny the dock warden gives reward twice
- walkthrough error in bound quest (forgot what it means exactly, sorry, my notes are a mess)

Shadow queen was featured again, yay!
This was a pretty good module. As suggested by werelynx above, I did play SoU > SQ1 > HotU > SQ2. Unlike most I enjoyed HotU very much. This module picks up after HotU and very loosely picks up the story from SQ1.
I began with a Human 18th Level Sorcerer, 7th Level Rogue with 1.69
The pros of this module: For the most part the story is quite good. The battles were nearly all very well balanced. I loved the variety of NPC's and monsters. The appearance of some of the characters from HotU was a nice touch. A couple of the puzzles were very creative and quite fun to complete. The D&D mentions and Forgotten Realms Lore was a big plus for this module as well.
The cons of this module: All of the issues mentioned above by werelynx, especially not being able to hire Johanna. I was not able to complete that quest. As mentioned in the readme, many of the cutscenes stuttered for me. I had to use the hints doc repeatedly as a couple of the quests did seem to be a bit vague as to their resolution even within the journal entries.I also had to go to it for a couple of the puzzles. I had to look back at the old vault page and the posts there to solve one of them. As mentioned by one of the posters on the old vault page, the Shadown Queen cutscenes were confusing at best. The "hints" doc is very thin on hints. A more complete walkthrough would have been nice for this module.
There were only a few bugs but one I could not get around. After finishing the quest with Missy's gem, asking her for healing locked the game up. I found no way around and so I just bypassed that choice in the dialogue. It has no effect on the outcome of the module.
Clearly the author put a lot of very hard work into this module. There is a lot to love about this module. I am giving this module an 8.
I give it a 6 (update, I'm giving it a 7 upon completion) just because I don't like how the former HoTU companions were dealt with here. I feel like we should have more options when talking to them and one in particular should be able to be persuaded out of a fight with you. We can use Persuade any other way except when it matters and that just seems off to me. Taking the companions out of it, I did generally like the rest of the module and the continuation of the Shadow Queen storyline. I also liked how the two new companions (Wald and Dihara) banter with each other, which was reminiscent of similar conversations in HoTU. I agree with other comments above that a more comprehensive walkthrough would help out, since I was wandering around forever looking for how to get to the sewers when I was told to go there.
Overall, it's a decent module, so long as you hand-wave the fates of several former companions in it. Thankfully, this isn't necessarily canon.
Gave up in the maze. I had been through all the levels but the supposed Portal was nto to be found, even though it is shown on the map! Bummer. A nice module and very well produced. Thanks for the great effort!

Pros:
Dinamic gameplay, strong enemies and it goes well with the original game atmosphere. The maker also took the time to make the places look fancy, and game is diverse overall.
Cons:
It felt a little bit rushed at times. And the maze riddles were really annoying.
Blackleg. Seriously? I found it super illogical that Nathyrra wanted to assasinate the character. I mean, throughout HoTU they bond a really strong relationship apart from the fact that what gender our character is. And she supposed to be a follower of Eilistraee.
And there is also Valen. I think the module wasted him and his storyline really much. If he was your one true love I think its a mistake to leave him like that. You didn't even have the opportunity to resurrect him, even if you could.
Well, the endboss shoudn't go down from a devasting critical at the first blow. The bug in the 8th cutscene (see readme) is probably a problem with the camera end position (distance 2.0 ... huh?), Then the mod is a bit too generous with XP and loot (XP-slider at 100 ...)
Some time ago I've completed the _full_ quest guide for this old but (imho) great module. Made it in PDF format.

More than a year passed since I wrote a detailed Darkness over Daggerford quest guide, and I did not intend to repeat this process in the foreseeable future. But then a year passed, and I came across the Shadow Queen dilogy... Unfortunately, the first part of SQ did not work on my device. But the second part hooked me :)
I was also a little upset by the extremely scarce and messy set of information on quests provided by the author. Having started the game again due to the fact that I’ve missed some significant moments on the first run, I began to write everything down. The result of these records deciphering is above. Should you want to correct, add or clarify something, please do not hesitate to contact me.
