Oh, I do love this module! I played it way back, and it left a strong impression on me when I did. It has a setting that wouldst not be out of place in a movie like The Seventh Seal, and the comparison is apt since it draws inspiration from that film, especially as you near the end and see the similarities in plot and where the plot is actually headed. And that, is what I loved about this module! It's unusual and ends on a note a lot of modules would prefer to shy away from. And though some might consider its' plot dark or bizarre, that to me is what makes it a cult classic. It's just unique. Like movies such as The Final Programme, or Zardoz, it's weird and that weirdness is part of the charm of the piece. The places you go in this module, and the things you do and see and are a part of in it, must be experienced but cannot with ease be explained. Play it and see for yourself! It takes epic characters on a very final ride they're not likely to forget.
I think the mod is broken. I get to the cemetary, kill the enemy and than nothing happens. There is no drop, no key no way to further progress the mod.
i wonder if this might be a one-off issue. i had no problem :
- killed the enemy
- took the enemy's weapon
- left the cemetery
it seemed to me that killing the enemy set a flag that caused other events to happen when i tried to leave the cemetery.
a beautifully -- one might even say 'poetically' -- written module. quite short [6 hours or so] but very enjoyable. highly recommend.
Nice!
I really liked this module. It was short but it made an impact. I do like how it was tailored to epic characters. There's not a lot of those so it was nice seeing this one.
I'm not sure that Orcus needed to be involved at all really. I was a little disappointed that he made no actual physical appearance. He's one of my favorite villians in the Forgotten Realms and I would've been able to kiss you on the cheek for the oppurtunity to kill him and steal his wand. But it was a nice acknowledgement to him nevertheless.
This module also did feel more philosophically centered than other modules. It wasn't afraid to ponder and introspect over just mindless action and it did so very successfully. I really enjoyed the module and hope to see more like it.
8/10
Perhaps I am missing something but not too enthralled. It seems okay, but now stuck at the wall and nothing to do...
It's more a mater of theme than storytelling (not that the storytelling is bad!). Few games/modules touch in the subject, and mostly shy away from the implications. The characters and quest are thought-provoking in their simplicity.
I see what I did wrong the first time, not visting the Inn and getting a room! If you don't do that, nothing else follows. So when I get to the wall, I was not able to proceed. I just completed this fine module and enjoyed the philosphy as well as the adventure. Very well done! I think there should be a hint somewhere and somehow about hitting the sleeping mat!
Upon replay I discovered what I had not done the first time! Sleep is very important for everybody...
Remembered to sleep this time around! This was better than I had thought, after a few years more of modules played. I always wish for more combat but as far as a storyline and ending goes, it was a great adventure! My thanks to the author for the fine effort.
Excellent!! I usually play single player modules that require a new level one character. But for this one I used the character that finished the main game and the expansions (oh so long ago!) and it was perfect for her!
Very nice module. Well written and original story. I recommend trying all the endgame paths: each path is worthy and deeply moving. On the minus side, too few XP to gain. I understand that this mod is a short story, but it's frustrating to be unable to level at least one time.
This is a must play! Loved it from start to finish!
Just Finished this module with a 21st Level Human Fighter, the depth of feeling towards the end of the module makes me feel like the author has experienced loss and never wants to forget them from his own Love that still stands the test of time. Great module, so Glad i found this Gem.
Hey cavegnome I understand the desire to Level during a module however sometimes gaining real life experience and wisdom as this module provides is worth it's weight in Gold, Treasure & Experience.
3h hours long gameplay focused on a story and only on a story. Despite having a high level and a great store the character building was missing - this is why 9 out of 10. The module could be rescaled for level 1 and would be as enjoyable as it is right now. The story itself, even if simple, was great written.
Do not save during some conversation - it can mess with a dialogues.
Arcane Archer is OP here.
Could not find a Greater Restoration anywhere but it was not a real issue due to lack of serious (Swordflight-like) fights - I was early cursed and feel bad running around with a super high DEX/STR and completely bad INT and WIS. But still, it has no impact on the gameplay.
This was a lovely module. Personally, I don't think it would have worked for a level 1 character, the battles could probably be retooled, but the story elements really required the character to be established and powerful.
I really enjoyed the ending. It's funny - I played through both the selfless and the selfish endings and I honestly thought the selfish ending was the most satisfying. I hadn't expected that. (The selfless end would have made a nice ending to my character, admittedly, but I have at least one more horror modules to drag the poor guy through, so I was pleased that the ending I liked better was also the one that let me continue with the story.)
Played this years ago with a character that went through SoU and HotU. Replayed it recently as my new favorite Paladin and it was just as amazing as I remembered.
Each of the three main quests was unique. Not only different from each other, but also from most other modules I've played. I especially loved the Golem quest. There was so much backstory to be found in the golem lab and the ending was incredibly poignant. The other two quests featured less developed backstories, but had quite interesting characters and plotting. And the choice you have to make at the end? Wow. Didn't see it coming but it fit in perfectly and really drove the themes home.
Like all of Chris Huntoon's modules, this one is very short. But it is, I think, the best he's made. And he's made some great ones.
