Description | |
After the defeat of Heurodis in the tower of the winds, you stepped into the Shadow Portal, and disappeared into legend.... or did you? You find yourself trapped in the Plane of Shadow with assassins and foes around every corner, not knowing who you can trust... or why. Yet you know you must escape, as you feel your life force ebbing the longer you remain in this shadowy domain. Also, you have a new adversary to contend yourself with... a young shadovar priestess, determined to do everything in her power to keep you there - or destroy you. Mod Created for the October Mod Contest at NwNVault. Designed to bridge the gap between SoU & HotU. Thank you to the community that made Shadohaunt a winning module! |

1. Fate of SoU Companions: explained, additional bonus is it has Mischa the paladin and she is hirable! (+0.75)
2. Given Relic of the Reaper: YES (+0.5)
3. Unique use items: power stone - works, mirror is not working (+0.25)
4. Ends in Waterdeep: no, but ends as PC goes through portal (+0.15)*
5. Ending level(should be at least 15, but since I finished SoU at 13th.. I will accept 16th): 17th (-0.5)
Final Vote: 8+1.15=9.15=9
*I deducted some points for the anticlimatic portrayal of Shar? That is not competent enough to stop player from escaping, but nevertheless shows up as avatar during the ceremony? Wouldn't her wrath reach out via portal... It would be better if the priestess was truly an annoyance for the goddess, instead of a true prophet.
Bugs etc:
- typos: "Labratory" - all over the place, items, journal; "Selun"&"weild" - Shadow Servant; "bth" - Strangely Glowing Orb; "Baehorn" - Journal entry (few places);
- would be nice if orb did not repeat the correctly guessed riddles
Anyway, if a module is built for continuing (or acting as bridge) an official Bioware mod, I am more than happy. What if the mod is even a masterpiece?
My game crashes while entering certain areas (inns and brothel, mostly)
Also, after finishing it, i get the error ''end movie cannot be opened''
i really enjoyed this one. i ran my 12th-level mage through it, she finished at 17th level -- so... yeah, xp was kind of slathered on, and the combats were pretty easy, but the story was well told and the action supporting it progressed nicely, the cut-scenes were interesting and well done, there were several interesting creative side-quests, and there were none of the typical bug-a-boos you often find in contributed modules. also : only one bug. :D (end of cut-scene buf strip)
good job. 9/10, 'will shop here again.' ;)
This was the contest winner...??
If you check out the original date before the update (2003) you'll see that it was for the original ign vault not this one.

All seemed to work and it was quite a nice module! I liked the story and the combat was just right. I picked the paladin for my henchie and she was able to hold her own and dish out the punishment! Some nice gear, although not much to be found or bought. A fun ride.
Tried this again with a similar experience. The little subquests were interesting and the hench interface was a good one. I was sorry to get hustled off before I could whack Shar, but that is the way of it! Nicely done.
After playing all the "bridge" modules I could get my hands on,I now understand why this won. It's definitely the best. Smoothest transition out of SOU and into HotU
Well done bridge mod. Fun story. Scripting all worked. Fighting was reasonably balanced. Only minor glitch is game crashed when PC entered portal at the end.
I thought the loot was a bit too generous, especially at the end. Shar's Punishment was traded for nearly 600,000 gold.
This is my favorite bridge module. I really enjoyed the shadow plane as an explorable location. The characters we meet and the quests are all really interesting. And I loved the shadow estate!
I did think that maybe the final battle could have happened a little sooner. There were a LOT of small groups of enemies leading up to it, and it did start to drag toward the end. (And then I forgot to actually USE the relic of the reaper at first! But that was my fault, not the module's!)) But overall, it's a really fun experience.
Well scripted, everything works, reasonably logical course of events bridging SOU and HOTU.
The writing can be thin- no really fleshed out characters. However, it has a really admirable level of content density and where the storytelling is itemisation or environmental its well done. The density and pacing mean you are always getting things done and creates good flow as its full of sidequests often with fun concepts. Pretty decent job of creating an urbanish adventure feel for such a short module.
Loot is somewhat excessive, although given the quantities in HOTU its not too terrible. Gained 3 levels. Combat not difficult. Overall an easier but more fleshed out follow on to SOU and rated relative to SOU Act 2.
Would recommend.
It was a really nice playthrough after SOU.
Good:
The atmosphere of the planes of shadow can be felt here.
You meet your companions and can hire them.
Reasonable main story for events between SOU and HOTU.
Bad:
There is too much loot, and I have accumulated a lot of OP gear as well as made a lot of money which is way too much I think.
Some fights in the end are easy compared to the beginning, which were even more difficult at first.
Side quests are somewhat simple, with no meaningful choices in conversation. It's like, "yeah I will do" and "no I won't", like who cares.
Places for side quests are very trimmed and put everything in one place, with not much exploration apart exploring rooms which are very close for each other for side quests.
There are some bugs, so it's better to save a lot in different saves (just do it). But the most upsetting thing is that you can't see a movie in the end. It shows the error "Can't open movie: sEndMovie.wbm". It must be in a formal webm format.
Overall, I can recommend trying this after finishing SOU.
