Description | |
After your adventures in Silverymoon, Saleron has transported you halfway across Faerun to Athkatla, the City of Coin. There, he tasks you with locating the final member of the trio bound by the blood oath of your parents decades before - a blood oath that binds each of your fates to that of the demonic sword, Hywelbane. Now you have only her name and a single contact, scant clues that lead you into the slums of Athkatla, an area under the de facto rule of the treacherous Shadow Thieves led by the shadowy figure, Aran Linvail. Yet all is not what it seems at first. The Guild, already staggering from a recent war with a powerful rival guild, now threatens to totally collapse under the weight of internal fighting, a development that threatens the incredibly fragile stability of the slums. What follows is a tale of political intrigue as you struggle to navigate the Guild's politics and locate the one woman who can free you from the curse of your birth. Whom can you trust? Where is the woman you search for? And what is the secret behind the infighting that threatens to engulf the Guild? A continuation of chapters 1 and 2. For characters level 3, many will advance as high as 5th level. Note that a new version of the Athkatlan night music is included in the 2.00 update. It is quieter than the original piece and should be used to overwrite the version in the Music Pak. Features: For same character as Chapters I and II Single player module Low treasure module User-selectable rest system Wandering monsters during rest No respawning possible New Major Improvements in Version 2.0! * 1 new subquest added * Henchmen dialogue increased with several new henchman banters and interjections * Corrected a load of spelling errors and bugs * Updated to CEP 1.53 * Redrew a few maps * Placed many new placeables and sound objects * Added a hakpak that combined The Amethyst Dragon’s three colored icon hakpaks * Rewrote numerous dialogues to clean them up and break some of the longer nodes out * Implemented a three-tiered resting system selectable at the outset of the module in the dm conversation * Reworked many of the journals * ... and more! |

Three is not the charm for this series of mods. It is not bad at all, actually it is every bit as well made and polished as the first two mods, but here the design decisions of the author start to become less bearable... it is not that there are more obstacles or even harder fights, but the story is not enough to work as a reward here, and there is no other reward since that is the whole concept behind the author's designing philosophy... less is more and all that, very nice and I wouldn't mind at all, usually I would even like low magic/low treasure mods if there is a strong story behind the action - the point is: this whole mod felt like an interlude... a way to pay homage to Baldur's Gate II and revisit the slums of Athkatla... but just imagine if BGII didn't allow you to leave the slums ever... how would that feel? That part of BGII was interesting because there were lots of things to do, things to buy, people to meet and quests too... here everything is more straightforward, but that doesn't mean it is a nice ride to the end, since the attempt to create a BGII feel to the mod actually meant having a lot of wandering about... not exactly my cup of tea.
But it is a nice homage to a classic game (one of the best RPGs of all time) and at least the resting issue can be solved by choosing the vanilla resting option at the start. And the story finally picks up at the end... unfortunately it does so not through any action on the part of your character, but through a series of cutscenes that basically leave you there... watching as the game plays itself...
Well, two more chapters to go, hopefully they will return to form and finish this tale with a bang!
NWAlleys link is not working.
Something really odd with that. If you hover your mouse pointer over that link you will see "file=http%3a//" in the middle of it. However when I (as an administrator) went to edit it, the correct "file=http://" is actually stored there.
TR
I just changed http%3a to http: in the address bar and I was able to download it.
I repaired the link to NWAlleys.
It is a direct link to the NWAlleys 1.1 file (the NWAlleys hak page also contains two later versions, which don't work with this module).
See series comment.
This one is pretty nice.Made me start with Baldur's Gate 2
While I really like this module and the series as a whole I want to say that I absolutely despise the rumor system implemented in Chapter 3. It is a terrible idea that forces you to waste time either reloading or resting to hopefully get rumors in order to advance in quests. You can potentially miss out on sidequests. Sounds like a neat idea but it practice it is absolutely one of the worst design decisions I have ever seen in an RPG. seriously, it's just awful.
The storyline is intriguing so far and the combat is balanced. The plot twists add a really nice touch to the story too. Although, both Chapter III and Chapter II ended unexpectably and I didn't have the chance to explore them as I intended (I left at least 2 quest unfinished in each module). That pissed me off quite a bit, and thats because I don't consider myself a completionist.
This is were the ultra-low x.p. yield degade an otherwise great story and sub-quests, you really should be around level 7 at end
I fixed the link to nwalleys11 again as it seems to have been broken, perhaps by recent admin changes.
Decided to play this series coming off of "Shadows of Darkmoon" and it was quite a shock! If you have not played SoD, well worth the time but it is a very different game than this one. This series is the complete opposite with its low treasure/low magic approach. I agree with Proleric's comments, when you settle into the low magic/low treasure, it presents an interesting challenge that is really enjoyable.
The series starts off a bit slow but Chapters 2-5 are all exceptional. I don't really care whether the game is linear or open ended at the end of the day just tell me a good tale. This series tells a good story. While individual chapters may be slightly less, the series taken as a whole is 9.5 for me.
Tiberius: Hats off you to you for your very hard work on this series, I really enjoyed it!
Not sure if anyone is around anymore but figured I'd ask... is there a conditional on getting the acadamy quest? I played through once and realized I'd missed a couple of quests, so I restarted the mod from a save I took at the end of part one; but this time when I speak to the person who usually gives the quest, she won't even mention it.
