I got around this mod with a bard and the with a thief but I didn't end it so far. The map brought little directions; that's not so bad, you can add your customised dots on it and fortunately the journal does not seem to have a lack of entries.
SPOILERS
While exploring I found the Luskan HQ which is full of soldiers that actually don't care about your looting and there is so much to take away.
All the areas around Luskan seem to be under some sort of siege from various creatures; I hadn't the time to collect any XPs since the Luskan soldiers were quite efficient at tearing down intruders before I had any chance to play my part.
So far I found the encounters quite repetitive especially when hunting down the goblin chief (not just walking xps? :-) ) groups of 8 to 10 of them that quickly surrounded me and seemd to spawn when coming back in the same areas. That seemed a little bit tedious even though the attacks had some tactics behind. The ambushes seem to have a stronger effect when the bugbears join the goblins. The description points out that playing with a bard or a rogue would be fun but encounters such like these would suggest you bring a fighter type instead.
This was very good indeed, if you are a tank type and can dish out and take a lot of punishment! Many quests that are finishable, some gear, although much is standard fare (up to +5 for weapons for example). Absolutely huge areas, but not completely empty as many are in other such mods. No map pins is a negative for me, but I got around it, and there weren't that many options on where to go in each area, so not a big deal. The lack of a Stone of Recall type device was glaring, with the need to retrace your route through several difficult areas at each quest end. And there is major respawn, so be ready! A whole lot of work went into this opus and I appreciate it, John Simpson!
