quote:-> for the coming Tuesday, 9th of April, late morning GMT. That's very late midnight/early morning for most of the USA.

Did you mean early morning GMT? About what time UK (Grand Universal Time + 1 (ie British Summer Time))?

I was aiming for 9GMT / 10 BST, but I cannot make promises on the exact time yet. The upgrade should be 99% transparent to users, with just a reboot and very brief downtime related to that.

I created an announcement content type for this, Niv :-)

It puts a notice at the top of all pages so people know it's coming.

Might make the announcement 24 hours ahead of time, so it's not in our faces too long, but it would be nice to make sure the warning is put out.

And thank you again :-)

The reason I asked whether you meant early hours GMT is because the East coast of the US is only 3 hours behind the UK. This would put the projected time to roughly mid-day in say New York, not midnight (unless you've used dirty great oars and rowed until you are alongside New Zealand that is).

Ah, well .. I don't think it's a huge hassle either way. Judging from the server activity, I don't think there is any particular time of day that would suit best. We have a very diverse community!

If there's time (Unfortunately my schedule is all floaty!), I might even do it tomorrow and update the announcement as required; as I said, there should be minimal downtime and it really cannot be avoided either way. Point of this thread really is just that people don't freak when they can't connect or see unavailability messages.

Oooops! My Bad. I should have said 6am for New York as the US is behind the UK in terms of clock-time. Nevermind.

Distribution upgrade went fine.

Techbabble:

Unfortunately, the new php version makes Drupal feel even slower! I switched it over to fcgi (from suphp) and that helped a bit.

I spent an hourtwo hours poking through the modules and disabled a bunch we were not using. I also disabled a bunch we WERE using, but I deemed less important than a somewhat-usable site.

Performance is still abysmal, but fixing this will require deeper-grained performance tweaks (and deeper understanding on just why this thing sucks so much, but Drupal is a complex piece of kit).

Full list of plugins I disabled:

  • user restrictions ui
  • drupal system charting
  • chart api views integration
  • chart api
  • privatemsg roles
  • statistics
  • feeds url fetcher
  • stylizer
  • oauth* (didn't work and no one was even trying to use it, afaict)
  • openid* (didn't work and no one was even trying to use it, afaict)
  • php filter
  • tagclouds (probably broke the front page tag cloud)
  • tracker (no longer see which user visits what)
  • diff
  • address field
  • fusion grid tools
  • feeds admin ui
  • userpoints visits (this one was especially bad. terribly sorry about your free points!)
  • database logging (ugh, really?)

That got uncached page loads down to ~3 seconds. (yay! 3 seconds!).  Anon users always see a cached variant and that's pretty fast then. OTOH, I'm still seeing the (very) occasional 500 in the fcgi logs when Drupal just decides to go all "oh, no, I don't want to serve a page! I'm a slobbering, lazy bastard!".

The underlying issue is that each update to a view/block (for example, active users on the front page!) invalidates the complete cache tree. As far as I can tell, there's some plugin that prevents us from using Drupal Block Caches. I couldn't find which one that is though, because the Admin UI is utter bollocks.

Still, mustn't grumble - this needs fixing ASAP.

Spontaneous downtime incoming in the next few hours; failed hard disk rearing it's head. Going to have it swapped.

This was very useful for the Eye in the Sky. ;)
