Hello,

I've set up a new way to donate, as PayPal is naught but trouble:

https://www.patreon.com/nwn

Patreon allows us to aggregate (and save on conversion costs) and we can avoid PayPal altogether if need be. Thus, the PayPal button is gone from the start page for now, as I was hoping to redo it all into a unified support-us/our-costs kind of page - but that will have to wait a day or two because of the GOG thing (what GOG thing you ask? Guess. Or check twitter.).

Please let me know what you think about it all!

Hmmm, PayPal is an established system, pretty well known in the US. I use it whenever I want an added level of protection.

What sort of problems are they causing on the vault end?

I donated via PayPal about a week ago and had zero problems.  Got the email receipt quickly just like any other purchase. I tend to steer away from any ecommerce transactions that do not offer PayPal.  It's just the way etransactions work these days and the sooner the established purchase sites become oriented to PayPal, the fewer lost sales they'll suffer.

The important issue is that many of us prefer not to populate our credit card numbers all over the Web.  Once bit, twice shy.

Madness... a blessing for the chosen few.

Saying that paypal is the way to do business online these days isn't universally true. :) The biggest ethical problem with paypal is their user hostility, where they just block accounts based on opaque reasons (esp. donation accounts). Friends got burned by this too, so I am very cautious in trusting them with any money at all. The biggest financial problem is their liberal interpretation of currency conversion rates. If we can bunch money as it's pulled out of Patreon, it will save in the long run. Either way, I'd rather not support paypal as a business.

THAT SAID, I understand that people want to use it for one-shots, and I will be re-adding the paypal link soon. We had to change accounts as part of the financial transition and I need to sort this out with paypal first.

Exactly. And it's smaller sites that hackers go after because they can overwhelm the limited staff and maintenance/security budget. I've had to cancel two cards already because of hacks and with all due respect to what Patreon is trying to accomplish, how much security can a non-profit actually afford?

If the processors are taking enough of a bite out of my donation to make a difference, I'll up my donation.

And niv, none of this is a reflection on you or your work here which I truly appreciate. It's just a function of survival on the 'net these days.

The Patreon link on the front page just takes me to the Patreon home page. I see it links as follows:

https://www.patreon.com/bePatron?u=3654616&redirect_uri=https%3A%2F%2Fne...

Is it supposed to take us to https://www.patreon.com/nwn ?

I normally donate via PayPal; not sure I'm willing to switch to some unknown service.

How about just a snail mail address like a Box# as an alternative?  I'm serious.  This is the only donation I've made in the last 10 years using my ID.  Some of the charities I want to donate to... SELL my name/address/ID to other well-meaning charities which is when the charity spamming started for me.  It's like a feeding frenzy in the shark tank.  Whooda thunk my lousy little pittance was worth competing for?

Nowadays, I stick an appropriately-sized bill into an envelope and send anonymously to any charitable institution I desire.  Spam died.  No doubt their administrative "procedures" are not set up to process cash in some of these places but that is their problem, not mine.  I donated to a worthy cause.  Not looking for either a tax deduction, notoriety or feather-primping.

BTW, I never insinuated that the macro-universe is all using PayPal... just my micro-universe of myself, family, friends, relatives and contemporaries. merely as a sampling, for what it may be worth.  Let the trader beware!  Here we are all proactive.  :P

I have no idea why it does that.  I've amended it to not use https (?!) and suddenly it works.  It also seems to work if you do open-in-new-tab, but not with a normal click.  Sheeeeeesh.

As to the other topics:

* I'll be re-adding paypal really soon. This is on the list for the weekend.

* If anyone wants to skip all that fuss, please PM me and I will give you straight up banking data or a mailing address. I will not post these publicly for obvious reasons.

If you have further ideas on how to better manage this, please post!

I've readded a paypal button. It's a button and it's there, and it's a button! There!

Again, if you would want to avoid all the middlemen, PM me and I will provide more direct contact data.

Edit: Made it a text link instead so it doesn't take so much space. The big patreon button is enough, but whole thing will need some more love, I think.
