Changes to Patreon

This will affect our donors so I thougt it should be discussed.

If you didn’t see the announcement, here’s what they said:  “Starting on December 18th, a new service fee of 2.9% + $0.35 will be paid by patrons for each individual pledge.”

The quote links to the site where I got the info. Usually very reliable.

It appears to be true as it is shown on a number of sights - TechCrunch, TheVerge, Engadget. Also on patreon itself. And patreon's attempt to jusify it. Just one week before Christmas! PR disaster or what? The name Ebenezer Scrooge comes to mind.

I was about to sign up for a Patreon account to contribute to several creators I'd been meaning to support (including the Vault). After the announcement of the new "pledge tax," and for the reasons that some (including this person) are citing, I'm now reluctant to do so.

EDIT: More criticism here: https://www.theverge.com/2017/12/8/16752670/patreon-defends-new-pricing-...

It's a little stupid but I will continue supporting the vault. It's worth it to me.

You can still donate on PayPal. There is a link below the Patreon section on the home page (which you can only see if you log out, for some reason). The site is in German, but if you enter your country (e.g. Grossbritannien for the UK) it will take you to your local PayPal.

But not while you are logged in to your PayPal account. I tried. You don't get the option to tell it where you are from or what currency you wish to use to pay in. It stubbornly stays at Euros. So you are stuck with german which I neither read or speak.

Agree with Tarot. That's what I saw when I went to donate, and it's what made me decide to open a Patreon account -- until I saw this.

We'll find a way to support the Vault. But this move by Patreon is disappointing. And judging from the huge and near-universal backlash, I'm skeptical that it'll remain in business much longer unless it does a 180 on this policy, and soon.

Actually I was having a mildly bad day. Originally I planned on upgrading from the standard EE to the digital deluxe so I went through the support email they tell you to use. I expected it to be an easy process like with a lot of games on GOG. Not the case. I was told that the only way I could do it was to 1st request a refund and uninstall what I already had before then pre-ordering the DD. Wait for that to go through and then install it when my order had gone through. As I can't be bothered to go through all that faffing about I declined. So as I already had the money set aside I thought I would give it to the vault instead as a one-off donation. That was when I ran into the brick wall I mentioned earlier.

I have read what Patreon said about why they are doing this, and it makes sense, but I think they should make one small change to the new plan: Instead of adding the fee to what patrons pay, subtract the fee from what creators receive. The fee would be smaller on average than what creators are paying now, and it would be consistent, rather than the 2% - 10% third-party fees. Charging the fee to patrons would discourage donations.

"I think they should make one small change to the new plan: Instead of adding the fee to what patrons pay, subtract the fee from what creators receive."

That's the whole point of what's wrong with their new plan. If they changed that then they'd be changing what everyone is criticizing them for.

There's already fairly significant fees to either side; not just from Patreon but the intermediate conversion costs (USD->EUR, which I need to be able to pay for everything). Everyone wants two pieces of the cake these days.

Just don't think PayPal is the white knight in this fight. Their fees are even worse than Patreon.

No matter what payment option you pick, short of doing a EU/SEPA bank transfer, you'll lose somewhere around 5% to 10%, plus some fixed fees that make the whole matter incredibly hard to see through, and annoying to deal with.

Fair enough. I just confirmed that the link to PayPal defaults to German and doesn't seem to offer any other options. I access it all the time for purchases in the US so I guess it's a setting/configuration issue?

If Patreon is a better deal for the Vault than PayPal, it would help to have an annual subscription option.

What Proleric said.

Andarian, Proleric,

What do you mean by "an annual subscription option" - like some features available for "paid account" only? I sincerely hope that'll not be the case and that I've just misunderstood your suggestion. I can see the issue - the amount skimmed of every donation made is quite a problem, but I don't think that "subscription only" will help to maintain The Vault's popularity.

Any other solutions, please?

Right now, the Patreon link for this site only seems to allow us to make a regular monthly donation. Reconciling monthly payments is a chore. I prefer to give annually. Nothing more complicated than that.

Again, what Proleric said.

I'm still reluctant to open a Patreon account now, unless it rescinds or adjusts some of its recent changes. But whatever the method, an annual option is much preferable to me.

I think PayPal also charges a fee: 2.9% plus $0.30 per transaction. The amounts seem about the same.

Well that's that sorted. So niv are you going to fix the paypal german issue I and others mention above. I still have a one off payment waiting at my end. BTW converting £/$ to Euros is still going to be a pain.

With Patreon's reversal I'm comfortable with creating an account there now. I'll probably want to make a creator account as well, so I'll need to go through the docs (in limited spare time after work). I should be sorted and have a pledge prepared in a few days. If it's possible to set up a yearly patron level that would help, since as Proleric said that would be easiest (and more cost-effective than smaller monthies).
