Rejoice, for Quixal has returned, or carry on as usual.

After a number of years without NWN2 I am back. I was never much of a modder but some of you may remember my doing my best as a playtester. I suppose it is actually premature to say I am back though. And there lie questions I hope somene has an answer to.

I used to run NWN2 on XP but my new computer is Windows 10. And to be honest, I am still working out how that changes things. For the sake of simplicity, instead of using my old discs I bought the Complete Edition on GoG so I wouldn't have to hassle patching and figuring out how on earth to get access to MoW again after all this time and the death of Atari.

1) First, while I can get the game to run, any attempt to change my resolution causes a crash. I should have the proper direct X, so I am unsure of the problem. Any ideas?

2) Next, would ressurrecting my XP machine long enough to pull my override folder and mod folder and simply inserting them on the new computer cause problems?

3) Are there any tricks to getting a better game experience on Windows 10?

I apologize for what must be pretty nooby questions at this stage but a lot has changed and my memory of what was isn't so hot these days either.

Hi and welcome back.

1) Have the same problem on my laptop.  Had to edit nwn2.ini, located in the Documents\Neverwinter Nights 2 directory. Under the [Display Options] heading I changed Width=1920 and Height=1080 to the values I wanted. Everything else could be changed within the game.

2) Don't see any problem with doing that.  I have an external drive with stuff from an old XP,Vista and Windows 7 computers.  Moving the folders back and forth seems to cause no problems with both the game and the took set.

3) If you find any let me know... LOL

Cheers...

Are there any tricks to getting a better game experience on Windows 10?
Here are some general tips, not W10 specific (you may know all of this already).

1) Grab NWN2 Client Extension, it fixes jerky character movement animation on modern multi-core CPUs.

2) Open Documents\Neverwinter Nights 2\nwn2.ini:
  • Under the [Display Options] add a new line "Disable Intro Movies=1" to disable intro movies (obviously).
  • Under the [Sound Options] find a parameter "Speaker Type" and set it value to match your speaker system (0 is for 2/2.1 speakers; 1 is for Surround, 2 is for Headphones, 3 for 4.1 speakers, 4 for 5.1 speakers, and 5 for 7.1 speakers).
  • You can also increase values of "Number 2D Voices" and "Number 3D Voices" in the same section from 16 to 32. They control the maximum number of audio channels.
3) In Documents\Neverwinter Nights 2\nwn2player.ini you can fine-tune the camera movement speed with "Mousewheel_Speed_*", "Mouse_Turn_*", "Edge_Turn_*", "Edge_Move_*", "Camera_Lag_*", "Keyboard_Move_*" for each camera mode, where "*":

- Min and Max — minimum and maximum values for the corresponding slider in the game settings. Decreasing its length will increase sensitivity of tuning, respectively.
- Default — default value used by the game, just ignore.
- Current — currently used value.

4) Also, there is a parameter "Pause On Lose Focus" under the [Display Options] in nwn2player.ini. Setting it to 0 will disable auto-pause when alt-tabbing the game.

5) If you want to rebind mouse buttons for camera control, check this link.

P.S. I accidentally wrote you PM first.

Thank you for the advice. I successfully changed my resolution and am working on getting the client extension going, and will tweak other things as I go and figure out what seems to work best. Then comes the task of getting my old rig to boot up to see if I can recover files. Wish me luck.

Welcome back. I do remember you from the old Bioware forums.

While you're looking at your resolution, you may want to check Tchos' mods out, if you haven't already:

As an alternative to Tchos' UI mod: xUI. Or you can combine it with Tchos' one as I did (I like a lot new transparent hotbars and the mode and command bars position with the "hide/show weapons for all party members" button).

Hey PJ156. I have the uncomfortable feeling I was supposed to playtest something for you when my computer died. Apologies if that was the case. Or maybe it was the Tarrasque project. Did that die?

Good to see some of the community made it over here. Is this the new home of the NWN2 folk or did the community splinter between several locations? I see the Nexus has forums and Obsidian made room for us when the Bioboards went away.

This site seems the most active of the three. I think Tchos hangs out on the Nexus, although I hardly see him post any more.

Thanks for the welcome back all. It is good to see so many familar faces. Is Dunniteowl still around?

Also, If people happen to have answers handy, I do have two more questions:

Is there a way to get rid of the giant "Game Paused" message in the middle of the screen when the game is paused?

Is there a way to get rid of the targetting circles under characters (or really, anything else)?

Regards,

Quixal

1. Check my link above. xUI makes it much smaller and moves it up (see a screen).

re. PAUSED [how to get rid of it completely]

looks like a ui-function call: UIText_OnUpdate_ShowPauseNotification()

and it looks like that call is made in 3 separate gui-screens:
1. paused.xml
2. noticewindow.xml
3. cutscene.xml

i did this a long time ago so I forget the details ... but, find those XMLs in your installation folder under

/ui/default

and copy them either to /Override or to /ui/custom (in the player-folder). then search each for the function as above. Comment-out these parameters in the elements:

update="true" OnUpdate='UIText_OnUpdate_ShowPauseNotification()'

like so

<!-- update="true" OnUpdate='UIText_OnUpdate_ShowPauseNotification()' -->

(note you can't comment out parameters inside of an element, so reclose the element). Warning if you make a mistake, you're unlikely to get an error: the gui-screen simply won't work until it's fixed.

Ps. "paused" will still show in the chat-window.

"Is there a way to get rid of the targetting circles under characters (or really, anything else)?"

If you mean the circle under your controlled character, yes: Game options, exploration or whatever camera mode you use, turn "show selected character cursor in free camera" off. Turning "movement target marker" off gets rid of the circle on the ground when you click to move to a location. No way to get rid of the circles under targetted NPCs or enemies as far as I can tell.

I don't get the big GAME PAUSED message, only the one in the log. I don't remember how I removed it but it may be a feature of this UI mod: https://neverwintervault.org/project/nwn2/other/gui/lite-ui

Haven't seen Dunniteowl in years.

I have eased back into the game. Shocking how much I have forgotten.Heaven forbid I open the toolset...

I started out with Pool of Radiance Remastered because of all the mods made for this one, it seems the most classically D&D (maybe I am showing my age) and now I am tinkering around with White Plume Mountain. Next up will be PJ's Tales From the Lake of Sorrows modules. I think I was playtesting The Last Days of the Raven or had just finished when I lost my old computer so it seems fitting I get back in there. Once the Path of Evil reworking is done I will do a runthrough to see what I can brea... um... playtest it.

I will leave the pause message alone for now since I am no longer all that confident in my ability to tinker with the game. thanks all for the rest of the fixes.

Cheers,

Quixal

I'm excited to know that someone is playing it. It's all one campaign now though, with a second campaign starter called lose ends.

Tell me how you get on :)

Sorry for the derail, but while we're talking about it... I replayed the whole thing recently (which I recommend doing, Quixal), and I was wondering what are the plans for the next module(s), if any. Are you still working on it? I vaguely recall you said you were taking a hiatus, but I'm not sure if I'm recalling correctly, or if anything has changed since.

I... might have gotten sucked into an unscheduled run through Subtlety of Thay first. I did download the "new" Campaign version of your mods though, PJ and will start on a full run after Subtlety. Wow has it gotten huge since I last played it... Looking forward to seeing old friends again.

For the moment I am on hold, it seems. I can play all the modules and campaigns I brought over from my old PC but anything new I have tried to grab fails to load. I will have to solve a version problem before I can try anything. I thought the GOG version would be the most recent but it seems not. The error I get is:

"Could not load Module. Module file may be corrupt or it was created using a newer version of the toolset and/or game resources."

The opening screen tells me my game version is:

version 1.023 (1765) (final) Aug 17 2009 - 17:29:45

I stumbled on an innelegant but simple answer to one of the questions I asked back when this thread was active. I figured for the sake of completion I would mention my solution here.

To get rid of the pause message in the middle of the screen when you pause in NWN2, drop a blank file in your override named "noticewindow.xml" to override the existing message. This might be a clumsy fix but it works.

Clumsy perhaps, but I'll know exactly which file to remove if I want to undo the change. Thanks!

GOG definitely should be updated to latest patch 1.23 (1765). I also get that message at times, but that's because I've f**d up in the toolset myself (fortunately I haven't run into such a problem I cannot fix myself yet - backing up my campaign daily...). You might want to try checking if the mod/s in question have any special requirements, such as hak paks listed only in the description, or that you must use any 3rd party software (NWNX or Client Extender or PRC or some such) or if it was built using such resources. It might also be prudent to check if the toolset can be opened without issues (you need DX9 and .NET 3.5 for that, if memory serves).
