Question about CR

I'm using challenge rating calcutaltor, but I'm not sure I'm using it properly.

Here's a question: what's the CR for an encounter of a single human fighter (let's say lvl 13)?

Well, if a party of four 13th level characters is CR 13, I'd say a solitary 13th level fighter probably CR 10 or 11, depending on whether it is properly equipped for its level. The fighter himself would normally be CR 13 per the standard ruleset.

See that's what I'm struggling with - a well-equipped solitary fighter should be 13 right? Same a solitary iron golem... But it's not. It's not even close!

I think for PC classes the CR refers to a party. So a level 13 fighter plus three other level 13 PCs should be able to take a CR 13 iron golem together.

I'm aware - but how do I evaluate the CR for the single fighter encounter? In other words - what level should the fighter be to have a legit CR 13?

There is no hard and fast rule, calculating CR is a best guess art. It has too many things to figure into it. Hit dice/hit points, feats, magic items, built in creature stuff like damage reductions, special abilities, spells etc.

That really fucks with my module, though... I have all the encouters procedurally generated - it's either a group of standard races leveled-up to a specific ECL or creatures with the same CR. But I designed them all based on the premise that the leveled-up humanoid's ELC = creature's CR. And now it turns out it was pretty much a lie...

MY LIFE IS A LIE!

Well just try play testing it then. If they are procedurally generated, you can tweak the CR algorithm based on the results.

What rjshae said. You can estimate based on the known CR of various monsters. There are online lists of monsters by CR.
