Windows 10 Fall Update (saved by ... XCOM2)

Weird adventure. My faithful PC just got Fall updated. It was quite a fall ...

The toolset got unusable, topping almost 100% CPU to draw an average exterior area, mouse almost totally unresponsive of course... In game one core totally saturated, same thing not playable.

I launched Fallout 4, totally unplayable. I launched Fallout 3, also unplayable. Both being unable to detect my video installation!!

I launched my old all over favorite Jagged Alliance II, it worked. I launched Expedition Vikings, it worked. I started suspecting something wrong about the .net framework.

I fired XCOM2 which immediatly reinstalled vcredist and ... fixed the issue. . A great thank you to Firaxis laugh.

Phew, 16 Cygni : Strike Back won't be stopped at the beginning of xmas period.

Maybe one of you geek guys can explain what happened and give a better solution than firing game after game in hope one fix it ...

Apparently .Net 3.5 stayed activated after the update .

NWN2 uses Visual C++? Hmm, well good to know. Thanks for posting this Claudius33.

I've had a related adventure. Visual Studio 2017 wouldn't load and repair didn't work. According to the log file there were key files needed by repair that were missing. I strongly suspect that windows 10 cleandisk was the villain. Only option was to uninstall and then re-install. Not only did that fix it but also allowed me to install fewer files as I only need what I write to work on a desktop PC. So ended up as a somewhat gain.

@rjshae : investigating a bit I found the Microsoft.VC80.CRT.manifest in the Program Files (X86) ... NWN2 folder.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes" ?>
- <!--
 Copyright © 1981-2001 Microsoft Corporation
  -->
- <assembly xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v1" manifestVersion="1.0">
  <noInheritable />
  <assemblyIdentity type="win32" name="Microsoft.VC80.CRT" version="8.0.50608.0" processorArchitecture="x86" publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b" />
  <file name="msvcr80.dll" />
  <file name="msvcp80.dll" />
  <file name="msvcm80.dll" />
  </assembly>

So yes it really looks like NWN2 is using VC80, exactly the VC library that XCOM2 reinstalled. May be desinstalling/ reinstalling VC8 would have solve the issue too. Actually it is part of the .Net archicture. Well, I'm getting too old for that kind of system investigation sad.

@Tarot : GeForce Experience can't optimize my games settings anymore, not a big deal but it seems to confirm that Windows 10 cleandisk is the culprit. IIRC I read somewhere that it was automatically run during the update. Hopefully, MS won't screw my computer up again, two times a year ...
