New Graphics Card

Hello all. My graphics card is dying in its final death throes and I am getting ready to decide what to replace it with. Are there any things I could should watch out for with regards to being able to run NWN2? Also, general recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Quixal

Several sites have recommended not to buy any videocards, at least until spring, given the cryptocurrency madness that has made graphic card prices skyrocket. That said, you have to be a little more specific about budget. I can reccommend anything, from a Titan to a GTX 960, but they may be well beyond/below what you can pay. I don't reccommend ATI cards in general, though they're cheaper, and even less so for NWN games given some issues that were never fixed, like shiny water.

Sadly, not buying is not an option unless i am willing to be without a computer until prices stabalize. I guess given that issue I should put myself on a pretty tight budget. The main reason to post here though was to learn about anything to avoid. I was aware of the water issue but figured there were other problems that remain.

I fear I am not all that knowledgeable when it comes to hardware. I have been puzzling over issues like just how much ram I would need on the card. I know the last time I was in the market there was a push for high numbers there on cards with not enough power to even really utilize it.

Hmm... I seem to be rambling. Back on topic. I would really like to not spend more than $250 and would love to spend less. What I had been limping around on was an HIS HD 5830 iCooler V. Which more resembles what I might have wanted when NWN2 was a new game...

If you can find a new one still in stock somewhere I highly recomend a geforce gtx 750ti based card. It's what I currently use. If you can find one it should be well within your budget as it is not of the current batch. This means that by the time you are ready to replace that card you should have enough money for a better one all saved up. Also I see that the latest patch to nvidia's drivers fixes problems that some people were having with their cards.

I have a nvidia 750 gtx as mentioned by Tarot. Performance is nwn2 is good. I having played anything with higher graphics than some Unity based games, so if you want to know how it does on the latest blockbusters I have no idea.

Works fine with Witcher 3 and Mass Effect Andromeda. There is a but though. One of them only lets me use some settings if I use a lower than native (1920x1080) resolution. I have the 2 gig card BTW. Last word for now. The witcher 3 has the most realistic water I have ever seen in a video game.

There's many factors to take into account in this decision. You're on a tight budget, yet have no option but to buy. As long as you don't get too creative with modding, and are not really picky when it comes to visuals, the reccommended card would suffice. On the other hand, we're talking strictily about those conditions being met for NWN2. If you're planning to play newer games, use resource-intensive mods, and have a taste for visual quality, I would reccommend either one of the mid-900's or low 1000's. If you come into some more money, or plan to replace in the future, I have a 970 and it works great with NWN2. No issues sans the one every NVIDIA card has on most old games, the "dancing shadows" over surfaces. However, I can only push it to 4x SGSSAA. 8x is a heavy blow on fps. In fact, you won't be able to get the 8x and max settings on ANY game, old or new, and still have it playable with a 970. As for more modern games, the only one I haven't been able to play with top settings was Modern Warfare Remastered, but even Inquisition and Infinite Warfare made the 970 complain at some point.

Tarot, the best I've seen yet is Inquisition's. Both games look very similar to me, but I have yet to play Wild Hunt. In fact, most beautiful RPG I've seen up to now is Inquisition, but of course, the third Witcher came a year later, so it must look better. Currently playing a heavily modded/tweaked/injected Oblivion for the first time. I highly reccommend playing old games you didn't when released, with the added benefit of years of modding and remakes.

Fortunately for me, or perhaps unfortunately, nobody has been making games I want to play so my priority is NWN2. I am also playing GW2, but more for the social aspect. Some days that is little more than a pretty chat room to talk to people I know, many of them from the old Bioboards. I do hold out hope for new games but I figure I should worry about being able to play a game when one sparks my interest.

Though the Witcher 3 stuff I have glanced at did look promising... But I am afraid being able to make my own character is pretty important to me in my gaming.

Sadly, the GTX 750 cards I have seen have madly inflated prices considering their age. I guess that probably goes to them being good cards. I will fish around and try to find some kind of balance between price (hopefully I can spot a sale on Newegg or something too) and beefiness.

Sounds like I should aim for Nvidia.

Any thoughts on Fanless cards? I saw a really cheap one that intrigued me.

Fanless cards on the whole (in other words this is a generalisation) tend to be underpowered. If you were looking at the 1030 powered cards they are only 64 bit memory, compared to the 750ti's 128 bit memory. The equivalent card from the more recent batch is probably a 1050 based card (which is also 128 bit memory). The memory width is important in that it is one of the factors that determines how fast data can move around the card.

Did you look on Amazon for your card? I just looked and the 750 cards have gone ridiculous in just a couple of days. But the 1050 seems to have become more affordable. Here is my search on amazon.co.uk.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I have ordered a nice 1050. I loook forward to both having a functioning card again and how much better things might run.
