Will NWN2 work well on a MacBook Pro with the following specs?:

OSX 10.5.8

4 GB RAM

2.4 GHz processor

I've read some conflicting reports on this. Any info is appreciated. Thanks.

 Selene Moonsong

One of the biggest factors may be your GPU. In essence, laptops are not officially supported. However, that does not mean that the game will not work for you. My "Mac-Fu" is very weak, so I cannot say for certain.

 Ovenall

OK, well thanks anyway, I guess.

The short answer is "Yes".

I'm running NWN2 on my MacBookPro 2.93 GHz Core 2 Duo, 4 GB RAM, and NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT with 512 MB VRAM, and it runs very well!

I can also run it on my old MacBookPro 2.16 GHz Core Duo, 2 GB RAM and ATI Radeon X1600 with 256 MB VRAM, but then it runs a bit slow. You just have to set the graphic options to a minimum and you will be fine.

 Ovenall

Update for anyone interested: It runs perfectly fine on the system I asked about. Thanks all.

 casadechrisso

I played it for a while on my MBP with 2.4 Ghz and 8600GT too and it runs flawlessly with slightly lowered graphics settings. The Windows version in Bootcamp though, mind you... I have no clue how the native Mac version runs, but after what I heard I'd rather not try.

 Sayuko

I'm running NWN on my Imac with SL (Core2Duo 2.0 GHz, 128MB ATI Graphic Card, 1Go RAM) and the video works perfectly. But I've got the messy voice problem that Windows users had. Any solutions ? (I'm using the French version)

Help! I am in the Third act on NWN2 and suddenly cannot access my character screen. The "C" button does nothing and when I try to access it on the through the character button, nothing happens! Amazingly, even when I go back to old saved games, the character screen won't come up when I know it worked during that part of the game. Please help.

I have a mac, 10.6.4  with no updates to the game.

Thanks

That'd be the first thing I'd try before doing anything else.

I mean, there's a reason why they release updates. ^_^

Updates for the Mac are here: http://support.aspyr...b/browse/000982

 Horrible Tomato

Was having a few problems with random crashes, nothing too major (solved it by simply saving often and crossing my fingers), and I saw this thread and updated using the link posted above and selecting the first link from that site. Now whenever I attempt to open up the game crashes on me almost instantaneously.

 Kaldor Silverwand

I've used it on three different Macs running both 10.5 and 10.6 (2 Mac Minis and a MacBook Pro) and I never have crashes playing the game. What hardware and OS do you have? Do you have enough memory?

Regards

 Horrible Tomato

I'm running OS 10.6.5 on an Intel Core 2 Duo (3.06 GHz if it matters), and 4GB of memory. Graphics card is an ATI Radeon HD 4850. I probably left out some useful information there... ah well.

 Horrible Tomato

Reinstalled and replaced the local vault and save folders with the old folders. Back to the occasional random crashing.

 Kaldor Silverwand

My machine is a little slower than yours and only has 2 GB but the OS is the same. Sometimes bad memory can cause random crashes and you don't really know unless you are running something that is actually trying to use it. I don't know if there is an easy way to test the internal RAM though.

Don't understand (honest question), why people don't just get the PC version and use Boot Camp.

I have a friend who plays in my MP campaign; he does that and never has any problems, and his system isn't all that beefy.

 painofdungeoneternal

Some folks actually prefer using a mac to windows, isn't it nice to actually have choices. And Atari knows this, they seem to always make a mac version, which does work even if it's not one of the better ports out there. ( That is assuming you have a newer intel mac as well, which is required for bootcamp)

There is usually a diagnostic disk that comes with macs. Other than that there are some utilities you can purchase which will do extended diagnostics. ( Techtool comes to mind )

Another alternative is just take it to your apple store and make a reservation with a mac genius, and they can look it over for you.

 Burnsides

I'm new to NWN2 and and can't seem to find how to open the dropdown menu.  I'm playing Mac version on a macbook pro.

I think i've tried every button on the keyboard but I must be missing something...help.

 Kaldor Silverwand

NWN DM: Not everyone who has a Mac has a copy of Windows to install on Bootcamp and purchasing a copy of XP may not be something they want to do. Also Bootcamp requires that you partition your hard drive which some people may not want to do either due to lack of available space. Also running Windows means increased risk of virii and malware and functions like Time Machine will not work while you are running Bootcamp. Also backing up files in a Bootcamp partition can't be done with Time Machine. All of these problems do not exist if you use a Mac native version. However, I find that if you want support, patches, an custom content then you really are forced to run the Windows versions of games. I use Mac software when I can and Windows version when I must.

Burnsides: What drop down menu are you talking about? The keyboard commands in NWN2 are for opening inventory, spell book, character screen, etc. If you are talking about context menus then you need to right click on objects. If you have a 2 button mouse and want to use right-click in programs then you need to go into the mouse (or trackpad) settings in system preferences and set the right mouse button to secondary click (or secondary button to right click depending on the OS level and device you have).

Regards

 Burnsides

Kaldor, what I can't seem to access are character special abilities for instance the "talents" given to me by the statue of purification. Also if i don't have a rogue with me I can't find a way to have a fighter attack a chest in order to get at it's contents.

 painofdungeoneternal

Drag them from your character feats list to the hot bar, or Ctrl-click your character ( which is how you do a right click without a right mouse button )

( just guessing as i don't play the OC )

 Kaldor Silverwand

Burnsides: First verify that a right-click on your pointer device is sending a secondary mouseclick. You can verify this by just right-clicking on the Finder desktop in an open area. It should bring up a context menu that includes New Folder and Get info. If it doesn't then you need to go into the System Preferences and set up your mouse or trackpad to send a secondary mouseclick when the right button is pushed.

If you are using a single button mouse then you will need to hold down the control key when you click to send a secondary mouseclick. You'll get tired of that very quickly though, so you should consider purchasing a two button mouse or mighty mouse.

Regards

 Burnsides

OK right click is and has been active. Dragging the feats from the list to the hotbar does indeed work, thank you Painof....

But isn't there supposed to be a menu with skills and such accessible during gameplay? I remember in NWN1 there was a character wheel or somesuch that could be opened up with access to all sorts of stuff. (Of course I was using a windows machine then) I still can't bash a chest.

 painofdungeoneternal

You just drag those to your hotbar as needed.

You can right click a creature and get options for slight of hand as well, or other things based on skills, most don't really apply though.

No the radial menu of NWN1 is long gone, lot of tears over that initially, but the options to replace it are much better really. After you get used to the new options you will have trouble going back to NWN1. Quickcast for wizards is much faster and powerful, and all the icons can be put where you want them instead of just in 10 spots, even the party commands you get with the V key can be dragged to a hotbar.

Add to that the user interface is adjustable. For an example ( something i have been working on ) Basically if you don't like the interface, there are ways to make it just like what you want, and there are quite a few things on the vault can let you have more options, which work just fine on the mac i have to add.

@PoDE : that UI is amazing - the ultimate playtester, i guess.

@Bs : don't forget you have to *hold down* right-click for 'a second' for the menu to drop (i think shift-rightclick makes it drop instantly). I don't have a Mac, but the timing should be adjustable in Options. you'll get BASH when right clicking on a chest ..

I had had problems playing on a Mac Mini due to driver issues that were likely caused by the last Bootcamp update. This thread has information on how to update the nVidia drivers on a Mac Mini even though the standard nVidia update scripts won't work on the Mac Mini.

Hello,

Does anyone have a good list of Add-Ons and/or Haks that work on a Mac install of the OC, with or without MothB/SoZ installed (such as listed here: http://social.biowar...2/index/3173142)? I have all 3 campaigns working on my Mac, but I'm now interested in mods, but don't want to screw up a working installation with stuff only really capable of working on the Windows version.

Thanks,

Steve

 Kaldor Silverwand

Both my OC Makeover and MotB Makover should work on the Mac. The next version of my King's Festival campaign (hopefully releasing sometime this month) will also be fully Mac compatible.

Since there is no Mac version of the toolset the things you would need to avoid are things that require you recompile scripts or edit the campaign.cam file. You can safely edit 2da files with textedit, so that does not require the toolset. Most stand-alone campaigns should be compatible.

I have two questions about the MAC version. First, is it cross compatible with the PC version? My friends and I want to play, they have Macs and I have a PC and I'm concerned that we won't be able to play with eachother, similiar to Civ V. Second, where can I buy a copy of NWN 2 Platinum for a Mac? Thanks in advanced.

I believe it is as long as you and your friends are all patched to 1.23 and you have the same expansions installed.

You can't because there isn't one. The MotB and SoZ expansions were never released for the Mac. You have to buy the Windows versions and either run them under Bootcamp or go through some effort to get them running on Mac OS X.  Due to the lack of a Mac specific Bioware SocialNetwork forum, I started one here for Mac users.

 Steve Barracuda

@Kaldor: thanks for the info.

@King Japhar: I've had good luck installing the Windows versions on NWN2 and expansions under Wineskin on the Mac.

I've been trying to eit my Hots file on Mac OS 10.6 o bypass the Authorization Server, but it doesn't seem to work. Does anyone know if NWN2 uses a special Hosts file in the installation files that I can edit? With the Authorization Server down, it really annoys logging in and out of a PW.

 Kaldor Silverwand

Have you tried editing the /etc/hosts file and adding in a 127.0.0.1 entry for nwmaster.bioware.com? The instructions I found online are:

... edit your hosts file found in Windows\\System32\\drivers\\etc folder (on Mac this is the /etc/hosts file). Add these lines to stop the game contacting the master server.

0.0.0.0 nw2master.bioware.com

0.0.0.0 nwn2.master.gamespy.com

0.0.0.0 peerchat.gamespy.com

0.0.0.0 nwmaster.bioware.com127.0.0.1

Haven't seen the need to try it myself since the delay is pretty brief.

If you are running NWN2 using Wineskin though then it may not be the Mac /etc/hosts file that is being used. Check with the Wineskin folks.

 Kaldor Silverwand

Been testing out NWN2 on Mac OS X Lion and haven't had any problems.

One thing to note though is that because Lion creates a recovery partition Parallels requires a simple work-around to get working after the Lion install. Also the Bootcamp installer no longer supports Windows XP or Vista. So if you want to set up a Bootcamp partition to run the NWN2 Toolset you will either need to use Windows 7 or just exit the installer when it asks for a Windows CD and boot off of the Windows XP CD to install XP on the partition manually. It works.

I hope somebody is watching these posts! After playing for years, I suddenly have a new problem. The dialog box slipped down and now covers the top of the quickbar. It's a pain as I have to keep clicking the quickbar to get it out from underneath. I tried pulling it up, but it won't budge. Any suggestions? I'm going to put this in another thread if I find one just in case...

Thanks,

Karen :)

In the Aspyr/Neverwinter Nights 2/ui/default/ folder there is a file guisettings.ini. The first section in my file looks like this:

[messageboxreport]

xpos-1024=689

ypos-768=114

Maybe you can change the ypos-768 setting in your file to move the dialog box back up to where it was. Strange that you cannot drag it by its edge though.

Thanks Kaldor! Mine says the same thing. Which one do I change and to what?

I have no idea how it happened - it's really weird!

 Kaldor Silverwand

If your default values are the same then the actual location of the window must be being saved somewhere else. Maybe in the save files. But that I do not know.

Have you tried changing your screen resolution?

And, just to make sure, you have tried both dragging the message box from its upper edge and its lower edge, right? Because I think there is a minimum message box height setting, so if it is already at the minimum dragging up on the lower edge won't work, but dragging up on the upper edge should. If you can drag up on the upper edge, then you should afterward be able to drag up on the lower edge.

Regards

 Frosty44

Thanks again! I'll give it a try - I never thought of pulling the top of the box up like that. I did try changing the ypos-768 setting but it didn't help - maybe I didn't change it enough.

 Frosty44

Kaldor, thank you so much - it worked! I pulled the box up all the way and then was able to pull it up from the bottom.

Thanks again!

Can anybody give me a link to a no cd hack for mac 1.23? My disk is has seen a lot of wear lol and is getting scratched. I'm also looking for a level limit remover for MOW - I heard there was one but only found a pc version.

Thanks!

 Ranger Solo

Hi Frosty!!

FOR MoW there is only the PC version. However, it can be used. You just need to unzip it and then move (place) the files in their correct location. As for the noCD patch issue for the Mac. As far as I know. There isn't one. For the PC yes but none for the Mac.

I am having a strange problem. I am running the fully patched version from the App store + both expansions. My dialog window shows up in a place I dislike. I try moving it but whenever I enter a new area the window goes back to the default location. Is this normal? Having played in windows, once I moved the dialog window the or any other part of the UI would stay to where placed. In the MAC version they constantly move back to the default location.

I've tested this on my system and have the same issue, so it looks like a bug. Maybe changing the values in the guisettings.ini file by hand will allow you to relocate it. That file should be in ~/Library/Application Support/Neverwinter Nights 2/ui/default.  The message dialog settings (for 1024x768) look like this:

[messageboxreport]

xpos-1024=

ypos-768=

hmm can't seem to find that file in the App store version

I have discovered this can be moved by editing the x and y position of default chat.xml

If you want to buy the current MacUpdate promo bundle (https://www.mupromo.com/) (NWN 2, Tech Tool Pro 6, and several shareware programs), as I just did, you will get a version of NWN 2 that does not need the CD. (Since you need to download the software (4 GB for NWN 2, 1 GB for TTP and/or about 150 MB, IIRC, for the shareware. The three aforementioned can be downloaded separately.) You will have to pay $50, but it might be worth it to you, especially if you want TTP (itself normally $100) or some of the shareware. The bundle is a huge discount off the software individually. Anyway, that is an option.

Thanks OakDragon. I just hate the thought of having to reinstall Motb and Soz - I'm not sure if it's worth the trouble - or the money.

I do have another question though - on a different matter. Is there any way to change a Ranger's companion? I had no idea about it when I first played a ranger and took the dog (wolf?) as his companion, but now I'd love to be able to change it to the panther. Is there any way to do that? I'll take a cheat code if there is one and there's no other way!

Thanks for any help!

I think the next time you level up, you can change it.

He's 17th level already and the only option that came up was to take the dinosaur, which would be out of place in the mod I'm playing.

Strange. I could choose what ever I wanted.

?????Hmm........

Going to have to think

Just got NWN2 OC for the Mac.

One of the reasons I didn't get it for so long was because I only wanted it if I could play MotB and possibly SoZ as well.

I've heard there was a way to use the PC versions of MotB & SoZ (as there aren't Mac versions) with the Mac OC by moving some of the files (I don't want to get bootcamp or a different piece of software to run windows on my Mac).

How does one go about this?

Ranger Solo posted some instructions for getting MotB and SoZ working at the NWN2mac.freeforum here.

There is also a thread here about it.

If the links still work that may be the ticket. If you change your mind about installing on Windows and copying the files over, I have instructions for doing that. That would require that you have Windows and the WIndows version of NWN2 as well as MotB and SoZ.

Since I already have the Mac version of the OC I'm going to see what I can do with that.

The NWN2 Toolset is only available for Windows. You would need to buy the Windows version of NWN2 to use it and you would need Windows XP or Windows 7 to run it on Bootcamp.  I'm working on trying to get it to work using Wineskin so Windows isn't needed (although the Windows version of NWN2 would still be required), but Iit may not be possible.  I run the Toolset on Windows XP in Bootcamp.

AGRHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! That's terrible damage... I should have read the fine print.

 Kaldor Silverwand

If you have a copy of Windows XP already then the price isn't very high. You can get the Windows version of NWN2 with both expansions for very little now. And you can get the expansions to work with the Mac client with some effort (see my blog). But like I said, I'm trying to get the Toolset to work with Wineskin so you don't need to be running Windows at all. I may be successful, but I can't say for sure.

 pplr

Hmm..

Unfortunately this may be useful yet but it is less so than I thought.

The macfreeforums has a link to nwn-europa which tells you to follow directions but the directions themselves are not viewable as links to them bring you to a forum bioware no longer links to.

And the 2 other links give errors.

And most of the other links don't work

 Kaldor Silverwand

I have posted instructions on my blog on how to install the Windows version in a Wineskin so that you can run it on a Mac, including the expansions. I haven't gotten the toolset to work yet and I don't know that it will work with multi-player, but it is an option if you just want to play and buy NWN2 Platinum. You can buy NWN2 Platinum as a download from GamersGate.com for $7 this weekend. I believe their download mechanism is a Windows program though, so I think you will need to be running Windows to download it.

I'm sorry the links are no longer working. This is the internet. And the Bioware forums were lost to us a while ago.

If I get the Mac version from the Apple store (13€), it seems it's a download = no CD version, right, no need to have a CD driving myself crazy while playing, I suppose?

Also, it seems that Apple store Mac version comes fully updated.

[EDIT] I found most of the answers in your NWN2 Mac Free Forum Thanks for putting it up!

You're welcome. Glad it helped.  So in short

- no CD required

- fully patched OC

- does not include the expansions or MoW but is compatible with them if you can copy the files over from a Windows installation

- does not include the toolset

- overwrites the CD key for the OC each time it starts

- Standard campaign folders are embeded in the .app; campaign folders that would normally be in ~/Documents are instead in a subfolder in ~/Library

- a couple of bugs have been reported

Before buying it though I would seriously consider the alternative of buying the Windows NWN2 Platinum and installing it in a Wineskin wrapper. I posted instructions on my blog. That would include the expansions and also wouldn't require a CD to play.

 I found this Wineskin-Winery-1.4 here

& that "How to use a Wineskin wrapper" movie here.

Now, with the help of your blog and those, once I find the time... maybe...

(Am I supposed to look for some "NWN2 wrapper" somewhere?)

Are those expansions any better than the OC... since it isn't the most thrilling story to me so far... with all my due respects to our beloved Bioware. :innocent:

I have this blog post that explains how to create the wrapper and install NWN2 from the Platinum discs. In this blog post I give more detailed instructions on how to create a Wineskin using Wineskin Winery (with screen shots), although the programs I am installing in that post are from the DnD Anthology (BG, BG2, IWD, IWD2, ToEE, and PS:T).  If you read both posts you should have a pretty good idea how to go about getting it to work. The two things I haven't been able to get working within a wineskin are multi-player and the toolset.

You do not have to start with a NWN2 wrapper, although there are a couple out there already. I had some trouble with the ones already out there and so created my own from scratch using Wineskin Winery. It isn't difficult.

MotB is a lot like the OC except that it is epic levels and the storyline is considered by most to be superior. I rushed through it since I was developing the MotB Makeover at the time so I'm not he best person to give a review on it.  With the OC Makeover and MotB Makeover installed I liked both the OC and MotB, but I developed the Makeovers because I did not like them very much unmodified.  SoZ is quite a bit different than the OC and MotB because it eschews the use of a heavy-handed plotline and cutscenes, allowing the player to have more freedom to explore. Some people appreciate that but others prefer the dictated plotline and companions of the OC and MotB. I enjoyed playing SoZ and it suited my taste more than any cRPG since Baldur's Gate.

Even if you are not enjoying the OC my recommendation is to buy NWN2 Platinum and install it. Then you can download from the NWN2 Vault (or soon from the brand new Nexus site) any of over a hundred free stand-alone adventures developed by community members and play them. Many of them assume that you have the expansions installed and may not work otherwise. Many of the adventures developed by the community are very polished and enjoyable.  There are also many modifications, like my OC Makeover, available for free that might make the OC more enjoyable for you.

Regards

All very helpful and warmy. It might take a little time before I set all this together, but as a huge fan of NWN(1) and its community, and community's modules, I don't expect much of the OCs anyway, but much more from the free stuff so I'd should be working on it shortly.

Thanks again for everything, Kaldor Silverwandg.

I finally downloaded the Apple Store NWN2.

It comes as a one piece 6Gb application.

Now I can't find the saved games anyhere. I searched the app (open package) itself, my '"Documents" folder, my entire Mac (Intel Lion 10.7.3), no dice.

Anyone has any idea?

Using the app stope version I got all expansions and MoWG installed. Upon playing MoWG in the East Market I enter a tower. Inside the tower I can hear voices but not see anyone including myself. All of the interior doorways are blacked out including the exit. Has anyone else experienced this problem? I tried adjusting video settings with no luck.

i'd say there is a folder named Neverwinter nights 2 inside your documents folder with the version you get on CD, not sure what is different on your version.

Try opening terminal ( it's an app in your utilties folder ), and running the following command which searches your entire user folder. ( ~ means user folder )
find ~ -type f -name \\*.bic

that assumes its inside your player folder somewhere ( and that bic is the extension of one of the 3 files in there, not at a place where i can check but i think it is )

If that does not work search your whole computer using the following ( / means root of the drive )

find / -type f -name \\*.bic

Think that should work, don't have lion yet, but it should be similar.

that assumes its inside your player folder somewhere ( and that bic is the extension of one of the 3 files in there, not at a place where i can check but i think it is )

If that does not work search your whole computer using the following ( / means root of the drive )

find / -type f -name *.bic

Think that should work, don't have lion yet, but it should be similar.

That worked...

(For the records, I also have an older french version, 1.12, of NWN2 installed on that same computer, one I know my way around with, located in that 'Documents' folder)

Your trick found waht I was looking for, among a few others of this new NWN2's things:

/Users/jml/Library/Application Support/Neverwinter Nights 2/saves/000004 - RRRRRRRRR/player.bic

So I know it's there, only I can't reach it... yet.

'jml' being me, (as the administrator) and 'RRRRRRRRR' a weird name I gave to one of those savegames for an easier search.

The only problem being... Lion maybe? Trust me, it's a hell of a new yet buggy system.

Those savegames are seating somewhere on my computer, you found them, but there is no such a thing as a 'library' folder anymore in my 'users/jml' directory...

A 'regular' search, my feeble level, can't find any 'RRRRRRRRR' file, the one you found. It's hidding to me, yet it's here somewhere... hidding just like this 'library' folder which is the key to everything.

Where could we find that 'player folder' you mentionned?

But many thanks already.

'working on it. :crying:

To my question:

"Where are the NWN2 saved games and player's directory hiding in the new Mac OSX "Lion"

I got the answer from Aspyr:

*******************

Aspyr Technical Support, Mar 16 10:12 am (CDT):

Saves are stored in User/Library/Application Support/NWN2.

OSX Lion now hides this directory, so please press cmd+shift+G to bring up a search window in Finder and type in '~/library' to access this directory.

Aspyr Support

*******************

And it works.

You can type in terminal ( in case you use this trick again )

open ~/library/

or anything for that matter. I think what you are looking at is called "goto folder..." which is a menu item in the finder.

Once you have it open you can make an alias ( shortcut )  of it, or drag it to the left side of your finder window ( not sure what that is called ) to work as a favorite so you can quickly get back there.

 jmlzemaggo

Yeap, just as you said. It's the exact same kind of directory than the usual only hiding, but now seating in that finder left side as quick aliases.

I was even able to play a save game from my former french 1.12 version with that fully updated english 1.23 version, even enjoying my (already) special override.

Now my kids can play the french one while my own savedgames are safely hidden from their claws!

Fun.

Thanks again!

It seems I spend a lot of time here requesting help and all I can say is thank you!

Here's my latest problem. I'm trying to play Swords and Sorcery and it's supposed to be single player or multi, but I can't get any of my characters imported into the game. If I go to the roster it's empty and if I try the rs code it says I'm successful, but nothing happens. This happened once before and I ended up doing the mod solo, but I'd really like to have some companions for this. Can anybody tell me how to get them into the game?

Thanks!

Hello.

I'm having trouble since upgrading to Lion. Basically NWN 2 crashes to desktop frequently when entering a new area/building/dungeon etc. I have learned to save frequently before and after entering new areas.

Unfortunately I'm now stuck. After completing Highcliff, I have my final conversation with the village elder, I board the ship to Neverwinter. There is a cut-scene with Zaerie and her minions, then the game tries to load the next area. It gets to "11 out of 11 areas loaded" then crashes to desktop. Every time, it's the same thing.

Does this game just not work with Lion? I have the latest NWN 2 patch for mac - 1.12.1295.

Anything else I can try?

 Rhobert

For anyone else having this trouble, I found a way around it.

Prior to the talking to the Highcliff elder (and triggering the two cut-scenes), I turned the screen setting to a low resolution. It then made it through the two cut-scenes and brought me to Neverwinter docks. I then turned the resolution back up to where I'd been.

No you don't. The Mac App Store version was/is fully patched. If you have the disc version then you need to download the 1.23 patch from Aspyr available here.

Is anyone else here experiencing numerous random crashes since 10.6.8 and above? I am playing with a manual installation of Storm of Zehir, MoTB, and Westgate. However, the issue occurs on vanilla installs (without expansions) for me as well. I am playing on an early 2011 17'' Macbook Pro in case anyone is interested.

I just noticed your post. I am having a similar issue on my end too, I play in 10.6.8 though. Mine crashes during area transitions most often, however, it does crash during gameplay for me as wel.

Ran this under Mountain Lion and had graphical errors with a GTX580 but ran great using a ATI 6870. Has anyone else tried this using an nVidia based card?

 sturmvogel66

I'm stuck in MotB in the Death God's Vault on my 2009 iMac (10.6.8) as neither my characters, enemies nor doors are visible. And the doors actually don't let me exit either. MotB has been fine up to now in my manual installation so I figured that this was some sort of missing graphic file that hadn't been used in the earlier parts of the game, but I've doublechecked the installation instructions and I had everything done right as best that I can tell.

Has anyone had similar problems?

 Frosty44

I'm I'm on an imac G5 - OS 10.6.8 and have Motb and Soz installed

I'm in chapter 2 of Raiders of the lost tomes and just started to have crashing problems. This is a first for me after all these years. Whenever I save I'm dumped to the desktop - no error code given. Before the crashing started I noticed it was taking a very long time for the game to save - and the mod to load. I put in a backup of the saved game, but I'm still getting the same problem. Any ideas?

Any help would be greatly apprecaited! I hate to quit this campaign after putting in so much time lol!

Thanks,

Karen : )

 Frosty44

sturmvogel66, sorry but I didn't see your request when I left mine.

it happens to everyone on a mac. Just change your graphic settings to a different resolution and you'll be able to see everything. Put it back the way you had it after you leave the vault.

I just bought a new MacBook running Mountain Lion. NwN2 "runs" technically, but the graphics are all blurry with a blue overcast, rendering the game unplayable. Is there a patch to fix this, or is one in the works?

 Frosty44

There seem to be a lot of problems playing games with Lion, that's why I haven't upgraded. I would suggest contacting Apple about it.

 cliff_g

I think the issues are related to nVidia more than Lion or ML. It is the newest nVidia drivers broke NWN2 on the MAC under Lion and ML.

I'm hoping one of you can help me. I finally got Mow installed and must admit I was a little disappointed, especially in the end. There isn't going to be a part 2 is there?

My real question though concerns the files I installed. I've been told I can leave the pack in, but the campaign is in the campaign folder in documents and the mods are in docs too. How do I install another campaign in the same folder, or other mods?

Thanks!

Campaigns always have a folder of their own and would be installed in the same folder that the MoW campaign is installed in. Mods have to have unique names because they are always installed in the same Mods folder.

There shouldn't be any reason to uninstall or move teh MoW files to install other campaigns.

Hope that answers your question,

Thanks Kaldor! That's exactly what I wanted to know - I didn't know if the files would interfere when playing other mods.

Hello,

I have a system/technical question:

I just upgraded computers, which meant I took my Wineskin emulator of the Windows version of NWN2—to play on a Macbook—and copied it from the old to the new system.

However, when I logged in for the first time onto a PW I frequent, I was shocked to find I can no longer see PC hoods nor hood+mask head appearances from the Arsan Hood Pak.

The only thing that is different between the old and new computer systems are:

1.  Old has OS 10.6.8, the new has OS 10.8.2

2.  Old has Nvidia FeForce 9600 GT card, the new has an AMD Radeon HD 6770M

I've cleared out my overrides (nothing in them anyway), and I even went so far as to delete all the game hak files from the PW, then re-download...but that did nothing for me.

All other head gear appearances available work BUT the hoods and the hood+masks from Arsan Hoods.

Could there possibly be code in these hoods that makes them un-viewable because of the AMD graphics card, OpenGL drives, or the OS itself?  Friends and I have tried contacting Arsan himself, but without luck.

Thanks.

Hi there! So, I am having issues with the NWN2 as well. I had the same issues with crashing and I am running a Retina MacBook Pro (early 2013, 8GB of memory) with OS X Mavericks. But I am also having some PVP issues as well. Hostiles no longer attack me and my companions no longer help me. This is after bringing in the other two expansion packs and Westgate.

More info on my AI issues. :(

 kevL

have you tried installing TonyK's AI ( compmonai2.2.zip ) from the Vault?

I mean, Tony's isn't specifically designed to fix a shutdown of the AI like in your video, but extra files in \\Override could give things a nudge

here's a thread i came across that may or may not be related...

 Jessica Sideways

Well, since adding that to my Override folder, the game now crashes mid-combat.

YouTube:

 kevL

huh.. on the good side, they wanted to fight

Is that the entire contents of /Override? (note you should create a subfolder "TonyAI" or something to put those files into)

unfortunately i'm not familiar with Macs but understand they get touchy with NwN2; there are threads where Kaldor, Frosty44 and several others have hashed over difficulties. I haven't heard of such an outright crash though!

which, as a PC user, leads me to believe there are installation problems. Suggest uninstalling, cleaning and defragging, reinstall OC (when there weren't any problems?) try things with TonyK's ... then move on to installing MotB + SoZ

Before that, you can try renaming your 'player folder' : the "Neverwinter Nights 2" folder under MyDocuments on a PC. The game should create a new, default one to test with.

- and have you patched to v1.23 ? I don't think the patch servers are still active but there's a Patching Information thread. (as a side, I didn't think MotB+SoZ were even available for Mac, so my advice is at best generic)

- lastly, do you have the Mac equivalent of Dx9.0c installed ? The game can crash on PC without it

 Jessica Sideways

Well, the only problem I had with OC only install was that the program would crash during transition. I have a No CD patch, but that's more justifiable when you have a Retina MacBook Pro which has no optical drive.

I think if it's time to reinstall NWN2, I am going to have to build a PC and install NWN2 on there to test. Plus, I want to play the original NWN again and Parallels ain't doing it for me. And yes, I have patched to 1.23. I am also running OS X 10.9, Mavericks.

Okay, yes, this is the only thing in my Override folder. Last I checked, one of the selling points of Macs is that the system automatically defrags itself. But then again, maybe installing Windows 8.1 in Boot camp & then install the NWN2+MotB+SoZ, test it to see if the PVP settings work over there.

As for renaming the Aspyr folder in ~/Documents, I think that has caused some... additional, interesting problems. I am going to make another YouTube video. :(

 kevL

i wish one of the Mac experts would jump in,

because, eg. renaming the player folder on PC is straightforward; the game creates a new one from scratch and copies in default files. Bootcamp makes sense now, but i still wonder how Mac deals with Dx9c

ps. Video drivers are also a prime suspect.

I tried copying the TonyAI folder back to the new ~/Documents/Aspyr/Neverwinter Nights 2/override and that didn't fix the AI issues. You can see what I am talking about soon. I'm uploading the new video now.

also, load up (my favorite test module) Uninvited Guests. try running through it, especially the lizard combat inside the house.

I want to see if the AI shutdown is unique to the Veil....

 Jessica Sideways

I just finished the video (still have AI problems) and both videos... the one after renaming my ~/Documents/Aspyr folder and playing through the Uninvited Guests module. YouTube is being slow though. I'll post the links as soon as they upload. ;)

 kevL

yep.

if the prob. is also in Uninvited Guests, it points to how the engine is accessing the creature 'scriptsets' ( hooks for onDamaged, onHeartbeat, etc ), which gets us back to installation/ OS

 Jessica Sideways

The Uninvited Guests playthrough:

 kevL

hmm, sorry to say i'm drawing a big blank.

A total guess is that Mysteries *might be* intercepting calls to standard scripts (even when not playing MoW..) and if you can install without it, that might be worth a shot.

I see that the enemies usually start their attacks, but then stop...

If it were just the companion AI causing problems, this is usually solved simply by toggling the AI on/off a couple times, and going through their Behaviors tab; but none of those ought affect monster AI.

if you can access the console (i assume it's possible through Bootcamp), this sequence of commands should kickstart the combat AI against the first lizard in Uninvited Guests, but it's likely to shutdown again ( even if the lizard survives a punch or two ):

- control mainPC and have no target; but it's not a solution and time would likely be better spent at Google :\\

I viewed one of the videos, but I'm not familiar with the Mac, and don't believe I can help here, but what are you referring to when you say "PvP"? I only know it to mean "player versus player", which made me think you were having trouble playing on a persistent world fighting against other players, and this confused me when I was watching the video.

 Kaldor Silverwand

For those people trying to play the Mac Aspyr disc-based version of NWN2 the final Aspyr patch which updates to 1.23 is no longer available on the Aspyr website.  I found it on mac.Softpedia.com here.

It has been over a year since Jessica Sideways posted her videos of her AI problems, so I am going to assume that she either gave up or switched to Windows.  But I will give a little Mac information here anyway in case another Mac user comes along. I don't know what the cause of her AI problem was though and have not seen that behavior on any of my installations.

First, there were I believe three versions of NWN2 released for Mac. Aspyr released a disc-based version and a download version. And then later the Mac App Store had a version available for a short time. Mac OS X 10.6.6 or later is required to access the Mac App Store. All three of these included only the NWN2 OC and did not include the NWN2 toolset since it only works on Windows. None of the expansions were ever packaged for Mac, though they are compatible if you can install them. Jessica was following directions from my blog on how to do that. The Mac App Store version was fully patched and did not require the disc to run. The disc version, even when patched to 1.23 with the Aspyr patch available on mac.Softpedia.com here, still requires the disc to be inserted in order to run NWN2. No official no-disc patch was ever released. I'm not sure where Jessica got her unofficial hack, but my suggestion to her would have been to buy an Apple external DVD drive and try playing without that unofficial hack.

While DirectX is always an issue for Windows, it is not an issue for Macs since Mac OS doesn't use DirectX. A more common issue for Macs is problems caused by the video cards and drivers. Unlike a Windows PC you do not have the option on a Mac of replacing the graphics card and upgrading the video drivers can be very difficult since generally the video card manufacturers only release installers for Windows. Often video issues present themselves as invisible objects or strange colors in certain areas.  The MotB Dead God's Vault is a hot spot for this.  Sometimes making video setting changes such as running in a window or changing the screen resolution are enough to resolve the issues.  But basically, just because NWN2 ran on your old Mac doesn't mean it will run on your new one. Anytime you buy new hardware or update the OS you run the risk of incompatibilities with older software and NWN2 is no exception to this. Microsoft Windows tends to be more forgiving than Mac OS about these things.

How the Mac versions are installed, what folders, etc. vary from version to version. This is explained on my blog at length and I am not repeating it all here. Basically the Aspyr disc-based version used a folder in the system Applications folder to store the official game files and a folder in the user Home/Documents folder to store the user files. The Mac App Store version instead stores the official game files in the Neverwinter Nights 2.app file itself, rather than  folder, and stores the user files in a user Home/Library/Application Support/Neverwinter Nights 2 folder. On OS X Lion and later the Home/Library folder is hidden by default to prevent accidental tampering or deletion, so to access it you can run the Terminal utility and enter the command (without the quotation marks) "open ~/Library". This will open the user Home Library folder in a Finder window.

In brief the most compatible way to run NWN2 on a Mac is using Bootcamp with Windows XP installed. You will have the least grief and the most compatibility. They made only a half-hearted attempt to support it on Mac and trying to run it natively on Mac will always be a challenge. Of course running Bootcamp on a Mac also has some challenges. Most importantly when setting up Bootcamp give it the largest partition you can, because expanding it later will probably be impossible. And you may be forced to run Windows 7 or later rather than XP.

Greetings! I have the MAS version and I am trying to play on a PW with custom content. Mostly things seem to be working fine, but the game seems to be unable to read the haks in the Library/… folder (I get a lot of "2D missing texture"'s instead of race/class icons, loadscreens, textures etc.). Has anyone had that issue? Is there a known fix?

There was an idea that Macs are sensitive to upper/lower case characters, but that wasn't tested.

 Tchos

Another idea is that the Mac version doesn't like filenames longer than 32 characters, but I don't know if that's been checked either.

Thanks lads, that's a good start :)

 Tchos

One thing that makes it hard for me to test the 32-character possibility is that I don't know if the extension would count as part of the filename.  Almost all of the filenames of my scripts, dialogues, blueprints, etc. are 32 characters or less, but that's not counting the extension, which would add 3 or 4 more characters, depending on whether you count the period.  There are several dozen in mine that would go over that number if that does count.  I'd have to test with a less complex module if I had one.

I'd bet the extension doesn't count, since animations file names are limited to 32 characters (extension excluded) and it seems no Mac user have ever reported any issue about animations not working.

For the record, the PW is Sigil. Here's a compilation of custom class icons that aren't working. I've digged through the haks a bit and I'm beginning to think that it's not naming that is causing the issue.

I've compiled a list of custom classes with their icons' names and whether those show up or not. The only pattern I see at this point is that none of the racial icons are working, but then there are three classes that use non-racial icons and yet don't work either.

Have you tried moving the hak files into the hak folder in the Neverwinter Nights2.app file itself?  I seem to recall that there were some issues with the App Store version of some files not being read properly from the Home/Library/Application Support/Neverwinter Nights 2 folder.  I don't use haks myself though and for the most part only play the Mac version when testing my own stuff, so I can't say for certain what the issue is.

Yes, I've tried moving all the files into the app, but to no avail. I understand that PWs can only read files from the library folder. I am on 10.11.4, could that possibly be part of the problem?

Would it be too bold of me to ask you to download them and see if the issue can be replicated on a different device? :D

One more thought: is it possible to make the game search for the documents folder in the main folder?

 Kaldor Silverwand

Well, considering that I don't play PWs and I don't use haks, yes it is a little bold.  But in the service of testing I will give it a shot this weekend.  But I also suggest you scroll up a bit and read my post from January 2, 2015. The last paragraph tells you what you should really be doing if you want to enjoy NWN2.

I started the weekend early I guess.  I attached to Sigil using the Mac App Store version. It took about 45 minutes to download and then I created my character and starting looking around the City of Doors.  When creating my character there were a number of missing icons.  It also appears that every area load screen is not showing properly.  So I think this matches your experience.

I've attached to Sigil using the Windows version of NWN2 on Windows XP. Everything looks fine with Windows. There are no missing textures. So I think what is happening on the Mac App Store version is due to bugs specific to that version.  I'm not aware of any work-around.  I've been an Apple owner and supporter for over 35 years, but with games that were written for Windows the best experience you will have as a gamer is playing them on the Windows OS. I strongly suggest you take advantage of the Apple Bootcamp feature, install the latest Windows OS, buy NWN2 Complete, and use that for NWN2 and other gaming.

Thank you very much for confirming, are you on 10.11 as well?

The sad part is that NWN2 in my experience is actually quite a stable port, pretty much everything works flawlessly with only these particular textures spoiling the picture. The weirdest thing is that some of them actually do work, it's almost as if there is something about the TGAs themselves that prevents the game from reading them.

 Kaldor Silverwand

Yes I am also running Mac OS X 10.11.  I don't think it is an OS level issue.

The Mac port functions and doesn't require the DVD, which is nice, but has no toolset, odd unique bugs, and very little community support. I use it for testing and troubleshooting sometimes, but my best playing experience has always been on Windows. As much as that irks me.
