can't start campaign or save games

Hi all, I posted this to the GOG forum too but I'm hoping someone here might be more likely to know what's going on with my game. I don't know how I got things screwed up this badly, but whenever I try to start the OC the loading screen freezes on "Logging the character into the module". For some reason if I choose a premade character rather than making my own I can get into the game, but then it crashes when I try to save. If anyone can get me out of this mess I'd be really grateful.

Here are the details: I just got the game off GOG a few days ago-- been meaning to play it for forever-- and started looking around for mods. Downloaded a bunch from here, mostly graphics enhancements and tweaks. All of them went into the override folder (yes, the one in documents) except one I needed to fix the stuttering movement bug. Then I made a few throwaway characters to test that everything was working. It was. Then I made the actual character I meant to play through the campaign with, and wasn't able to start the campaign for the reasons above. I'm pretty sure I didn't mess with any mods between making the throwaways and the actual character, but maybe I forgot. Since then I've tried various measures to get things working again, including a full reinstall. I've checked that my override folder is now completely empty and the install is as clean as I know how to get it, so I can't imagine what's causing the problem, but something is because it's still happening. I have no idea what's going on so if anyone here has ideas I'd love to hear them-- would like to be able to actually play this game!

TLDR: Can't start campaign with custom char, can't save game with premade char, full reinstall didn't fix, I am so confused.

install Dx9.0c redistributable from Microsoft, even if you already have a higher Dx version.

for the toolset, install (or enable) .NET 3.5

that said, I vaguely recall something about characters causing problems. i've had malformed characters with too many skills listed that caused problems, but if you're creating the characters with a stock install that shouldn't be an issue ... maybe someone with more insight, who remembers the faulty "character" thing, will pipe up.

also make sure your version is 1.23.1765 (latest)

rename the nwn2 folder within your documents folder and start the game without changing settings. start as admin and check if the issue still persists. afterwards you can copy and paste the nwn2.ini and nwn2player.ini into the newly created nwn2 folder overwriting already existent files.

Unfortunately, none of these suggestions have worked. I do have the latest version.

does this also happen with both expansions or mysteries of westgate? what operation system do you run?

Windows 10, and I've also tried running in compatibility mode with 7 and XP SP3. It happens with both expansions and mysteries of westgate as well.

Characters made with custom class content (such as Kaedrins class pack) in effect can cause this issue if the class content is no longer available.

Well, knowing that something exists that can cause this is a step up because I couldn't find anything similar anywhere, but I don't see how that could be the problem since I never used any custom class content. The only thing I can think of that might have adjusted any of that is NWN2 fixes. In any case, I've got rid of all mods and reinstalled the game; it should be entirely vanilla now.

it might be some sort of user-access/user-privileges thing. Personally, i install the game to the root of a drive, for example:

C:\Neverwinter Nights 2\

- while i can't think of anything offhand that subsequently writes to the installation folder, \Program Files is protected [i think, I turn as much of that cr*p off as i can].

- the game does need read/write access to your user-temp folder but that should be standard (the module-files will be unpacked and 'played' from there).

- your user-documents hierarchy will also need read/write access and again that should be standard (that's where custom characters are stored, in the localvault, and there's the Saves folder also)

plus, note that the Registry *might* hold onto some stale data between de-installation & re-installation -- not sure but you could use a registry-cleaner like CCleaner between the two (not related but defrag also).

/just some thoughts...

Solved!

@Kevls that point about needing to write into documents put me on the right track. I realized it was making all the folders it needed, but my antivirus had decided neverwinter nights 2 was a protected folder and wasn't allowing the game to actually create any files in it.I've told the antivirus to allow neverwinter nights 2 to change files and everything works again. I still have no idea how it started blocking things but it works!
