Gmax Tutorials

I am looking at making a modification to the Sky Tileset modification posted by Chaos Theocrat.  While I love the terrain, most of the buildings to my eye leave a bit to be desired, as it seemed to make use of mostly blocky, rural buildings.  To me, it is lacking in airy, lighter structures.  My plan is to utilize some of the Elven structures present in CTP_Elven_City, and (with permission ;) ) borrow a few of Zwerkules excellent work from the Mountains and More tileset.

In the past, most of my tileset changes have been done with simply replacing textures via notepad to the *.mdl, but I have a feeling that this will require some more robust editing, as the heights are off for some of the tiles I want to use, and I want greater control as well with texture use.

Is there an idiots guide to Gmax that you all know of?  By this I mean, a step by step on how to set it up (I know I'll need NWmax plugins), as well as some simple examples to work through so I can learn the skills needed.  I've been building for a PW for years, but never, until now, really needed to modify existing content.

The simpler the better, folks.  I'm an old phart, and while I am not technologically challenged, I know I'll need to learn new terminologies and processes.

As I will upload this when finished, I want to make sure I am making a quality offering; my first, to a community from whom I have received more than I have given.

Thanks, Russell :D

Winterhawk and Bannor posted some great tutorials on the Harvest Moon Consortium forums...

Highly recommended. Also, of course, you can post any questions to us *other* old f.a.r.t.s (Fathers against radical teenagers) either here or on the bioware Custom Content forum :-)

Thank you, Sir.  Scouring the forums there, and have printed off just a few pages for reference.  >.>

@Miscr3ant

Please do... As the sky tileset is simply the lone "Atmosphere" set from the Arcane Space pack, and i am working on a module using the later thingy, i am very interested in all progress you can summon.

I agree with you on the necessity of more airy lighter structures and fluffy terrain (classic tileset rocks or cliffs don't cut it, just repainted with cloud texture). Some bugs need a little love: see the supporting clouds trunks (!) for exemple. And, well... thunderstorm clouds are not that convincing. Don't misunderstand me. I love this tileset and am thankful for all the work Nwn community invested here, but i have frequent dreams of powerful vessels grazing delicate clouds in alien planet atmospheres ;-)

 In the GMax learning department, Merricksdad's made a video on Gmax tileset editing.

You can find GMax "LOK Video Tutorials 1-8 by Danmar" and lots of other useful docs here too:
