NWN The Dark Sun

We are currently in the process of creating the world of Dark Sun using NWN (Neverwinter Nights).

Project pate can be found here NWN Dark Sun

*    We have been working on this project for over a year now and we are still looking for more people who would like to help with it. So join our team and help in any way you can. (Just Contact me here on the Vault)

Our History

We started this project with just two people Dizzitt Gardan and I (Tonden Ockay). We have been friends for over 25 years ever since high school. Dark Sun was the D&D campaign we played the most. I would have to say we played it anywhere from one to three times a week for three to four years solid.

We both have all the AD&D 2nd Dark Sun books and have read and studied on the world for years. The problem is that our old group just can’t get together like we used to back in high school. So over the last few years Dizzitt and I have been learning how to make and use custom content with NWN. We are both at a point where we feel that we could bring the world of Dark Sun to life using NWN.

To start we searched through the Vault collecting all the different Dark Sun content out there. Then we looked it all over and only kept what we felt was of high enough quality.

The Dark Sun CCC was one of the haks that we felt had what we were looking for. So we split it up into individual haks to make them easier to work with, pass back and forth, and download.

Individual Haks

·         Tilesets - needed for the world of Dark Sun

·         Placeables.hak

·         Items.hak

·         Creatures.hak

·         Loadscreens, Portraits, Skies.hak

·         Visual Effects.hak

Currently Working On

So at this point and time we are working on adding to and improving on the above haks. Everyone sends an updated hak of the work they have done once a week. This helps to make sure we keep moving forward on the project as well as to insure we don't lose a lot of work if something was to happen.

There are Six of us currently working on this project. That said we all have jobs, school, family, and other real life things that has to come first. There for, we only get to work on the project in out free time. Which is why we are always looking for people who would like to help bring this world to NWN. If you would like to help just contact me and we will see how you might be able to help with this project.

Who is working on what.

Tilesets haks - Cervantes and myself (Tonden Ockay) (a lot of work goes into tilesets so we could use more help here)

Creatures/NPC's haks - Draygoth and Shemsu-Heru (there are a lot of NPC's and Creatures so we could use more help here)

Music/item icons - Time Bandit

Weapons and Armor - Sunssarathi2029, Dizzitt Gardan, We could still use some more help in this area.

Placeables hak - Dizzitt Gardan (has done some work but for the most part its still Open right now)

Scripting - Open right now (we really could use a few scripters)

Custom Races and Classes - Dizzitt Gardan

For The Future

We would like to create all the key points of interest in the Tyr Region and use them to make a PW.

Then later at some point we would like to create modules and bring the flip book adventures to life.

I would like to thank " Zwerkules " for making such a great Arabian Nights tileset.

We will be using Zwerkules Arabian Nights houses for common housing in our City-State of Tyr's tileset.

We still need rich, poor, and ruins houses for this tileset.

Thanks to T0r0 for his T0r0’s Rural Expansion hak

The 6 in 1 tileset I’m working on for Dark Sun will have T0r0’s raise and lower ground/ slopes. So it could be used to make Sandy Wastes and or Rocky Badlands.

Hera is just a small example of the great work Draygoth is doing for our project.

The MDL on the left is from NWN and the picture on the right is from the 2nd Edition Dark Sun Monstrous Compendium Appendix II.

Very Nice work Draygoth I would say keep up the great work but I know you will because you love this world as much as Dizzitt and myself does. I can't wait to see your next upload.

No its not perfect, but sense I just started trying to learn how to use Gmax a few weeks ago and I still have a lot to learn about the program, I think it looks close. That said, I will look into making something that even looks closer once I have mastered Gmax. :P

I would like to thank Shemsu-Heru for making a very unique Dark Sun creature. Rikus fought this creature in the novels and came close to dieing.

Here is some art work of the Gaj so you can get an idea of what it kinda looks like.

And Thanks again to Shemsu-Heru for bring the Gaj to life in our NWN Dark Sun Project.

Thanks to “ Time Bandit “ for the very nice looking Large Icon Artwork to be used for our Dark Sun Project.

There is a lot of work involved making and putting together a Ver Large Project like this from scripts, artwork, models, and so on. It takes a lot of people putting more hours then we can count to make the whole thing come together.

So thanks again Time Bandit for the work you have done so far and are still doing for this project.

I have been working on making some stone painting artwork for in game, that will be placed on the side of the Ziggurat.

All I'm really doing is finding Dark Sun artwork on the internet that I have always like the looks of and recreating it using a paint program. I't a lot of work and taking a good amount of time per painting because I want them to look like paintings on the side of a stone wall and I want them to blend well with the textures in the tileset I'm working on.

I had done 4 before I really started getting the hang of it and the first 4 I did look ok, but I wasn't really happy with them. That said I really like how 5 and 6 turned out. So I may be going back and redoing the first 4.

All that said here is the last two I have done 5 and 6.

Thanks to " Time Bandit " for contributing Tombs & Traps Icons for our Project.

A project this size takes a lot of work from playable races, tilesets, creatures, placeables, items, scripts, and even icons. Every one of these things takes people hours of their free time to do. So again Thanks to Time Bandit for all the time that went into putting together this collection of icons for our project.

I have taken the NWN2 placeable Buildings and brought them into NWN1, here is some screenshots of some of them.

I'm still working on textures but they are close to the look that I'm going for.

I also have plans to turn these placeables into tiles for the tileset I'm currently working on.  However its just not at the top of the list at this minute.

Here are a few more textures I made for our project.

The art work is Broms all I did was recreate his art work to look like paintings on a stone wall. I wanted them to blend more with my NWN1 textures and to look as if they truly belonged in the game.

Each of these textures has taken me hours per one in order to recreate them to look the way that they do. My guess is that most people wouldn't want to put this kind of time into a few textures. If people only new how many hours I have wrapped up in all these painting textures that I have recreated they would probably think I was crazy.  However I think it will help our project feel more like Dark Sun. After all if you put all kinds of time and work into an RPG project but you fail to capture the feel then what is the point?

The following stone wall paint of a human gladiator is over twice as tall as a human in game and look just as clear in game as it does here.

This stone painting remake was the 3rd one that I did so I was still learning and it took me about 2 to 3 hours to remake.

I'm not going to say how many hours the following remake stone paintng from the Dragon Kings book cover took me.  :)

However this following Dragon painting is over 4 to 5 times taller then a human in game and man does it look good in game.

Those are money. I like the consitency across the medium, which I think is paramount in adding versimilitude to the game world.

I saw in another thread a question on statues I did some work with statues that may interest you. I made statues that gradually change positions over time, and then others that react if you hit them and then freeze in a new position. Also one that move across/slide across the floor. Examples of this can be seen in Son of Brogo's (moving statues) in the Chateau Fontenbleau area, and in the tomb of Sleeps with Bears (sliding statue). In the Woodlands area (reactive statues). I also made a video but it was sort of crummy, I may or may not post it. Anyway continued good luck with your world.

Standard Statue: https://neverwintervault.org/project/nwn1/prefab/creature/deer-statue

Gaurdian Statue (handheld weapon): https://neverwintervault.org/project/nwn1/prefab/creature/stone-kobold

Guardian Statue (add ranged attack): https://neverwintervault.org/project/nwn1/prefab/creature/stone-gargoyle

I never put up the files for the additional statues, but they are in the gameworld.

I had a concept for a corridor like in horror movies where the statues are slowly moving, or perhaps change into different positions reacting to interlopers, as the kobold statues do, though more advanced than that. So anyway I love statues.

Cheers!

No beacuse I wanted to post all six of them before I posted the large stone structure mdl they will all appear on.

Plus they are remakes of iconic Dark Sun Art and I have only posted these kinds of texture paintings three times over the last three and a half months that we have been working on this Dark Sun project. However I would admit they could have been spaced out a little more but like I said I wan't to post them before posting something else.

Oh and I have another custom content tutorial video to add to my "  " page but I have to wait to post it till I post the structure I was talking about, beacuse the video has that structure in it. So this is another reason I just wanted to get all of the paintings posted, then the structure,  followed by the video. The point is that there is some reason to my madness.

Here is a look at a tile based Ziggurat for the City-State of Tyr that is fully walkable. I do plan on adding the last two paintings at a later date and add some statues and may be a few other finishing touches but for the most part its done.

The top of the Ziggurat was reworked from an Aztec Ziggurat and the rest was fully custom made by me. I don't think it looks that bad for my first really tile based structure, but feel free to give me your thoughs.

Oh and ya I changed the paintings on it just because I wanted to put some iconic Dark Sun artwork on it.

Edit: I know the textures repeet too much so I will need to spread it out on the model or use a larger texture for the release.  That said its not as noticable in game as it is here in the screenshots.

Dizzitt Gardan has been hard at work on making playable races for our project. These playable races are part of a hak he is working on, because we currently aren't using NWNX or any other system like it for our project at this time. We are trying to stay away from NWNX and systems like it so that our work can be used for just about any thing from a PW to a small downloadable module.

Well I would like to thank Dizzitt Gardan for all the time and hard work he has put into this hak. After all he didn't have a clue on how to do this before he started. There for, he took it upon his self to learn everything he needed in order to make these playable races before he started, and still continued to learn more as he went along. Now that he knows how to do all the work, this is just the first of several new playable races for our project.

Very nice work Dizzitt and I'm looking forward to seeing the other races

Weekly Highlight # 17

Hi all sorry about not having a weekly highlight last week. I have a lot going on with real life. The weather is starting to warm up a little here, which is allowing me to get out and work. In the dead of winter I spend a lot of time in side, so I'm able to spend a lot of time working with NWN. However I spend a lot of time working out doors in the wormer months, so I don't get to spend as much time working with NWN.

All that said we are still hard at work on the project and even if things have to slow down during the summer months, we will still be working on it with what free time we have.

Here is this weeks weekly highlight, it an Earth Drake that was part of the Dark Sun CCC from a while back. but never the less its a Dark Sun creature that we put in out haks and will be using.

We now have working cliffs/ridges in our desert tileset and hills/slopes are now set up as a terrain option.

I will be adding more options for the cliffs/ridges, but I just wanted to share that they are working and looking very nice along side the smooth looking hills/slopes.

Due to some plans I have for this tileset in the near future the cliffs/ridges will be part of the raised ground terrain, while the hills/slopes will be a slope crosser.

I'm really a very BIG fan of the uneven ground in this tileset, I just really love the way it looks.

Thanks for pointing that out because If your talking about what I think you are, then I have been toying around with a few ideas for them. I'm just not a fan of a clear cut line where the sand meets the ridge. I took a look at Biowares Desert but there were no hills or ridges, so were you talking about the top of the Chasm Terrain? I

had thought of:

a. having the sand slope down at the top edge of the ridge

b. having the rock texture on top of the ridge fade back into the sand textures

Again these are just two ideas I have been thinking of trying but I haven't done it yet.
