Standard Addons and Reskins vs Total New Custom Tilesets

 

 

I have been thinking a lot about lag, hak sizes, resources, and I was just wondering if it was better to use the standard tilesets vs total new custom tilesets.

What I'm talking about is using the standard tilesets as a base, then make small haks that would do addons and reskins for them.

I wasn't sure if something like this would be better on the help with resources or make it easier on the engine vs total new custom haks.

I'm just trying to understand how every thing works.

We are working on a project that has

- custom races

- custom classes

- custom creatures

- custom weapons

- custom armor

- custom mounts

- custom placeables

- custom buildings and walls

We are going to have a boat load of custom things with better textures then the standard game has. This is why I'm trying to look at every possible way to make all of this easier on servers, players, and/or the engine.

I just don't understand how everything works, but I would like to.

Many of the custom tilesets you get tend to be copies of the standard tileset models with different texture files to be honest, so if you know you don't want to use one of the standard tilesets then I would imagine including a hak with just overwriting texture files for them is an option. It would keep the haks you use smaller, which isn't a bad thing, though I'm not sure if standard models load faster than additional custom ones.

However, you do have to be wary as some of the tilesets use texture files that are also used by other tilesets and standard placeables - sometimes even custom placeables and tilesets that choose to use the standard textures. It's possible that might creep into items too, though to date I've never seen it.

I just know that I will not need most if not all the standard tileset in their current form. So I was thinking that I could just reskin them and make some addons instead of making whole tilesets, so my haks would be smaller. I wasn't sure if this would help with other things as well like loading area times, lag, resources, be a little easier on the engine, the server, and/ or players PC's. I didn't used to think of these things but as my haks grow in size and as we update the textures and polys we are starting to see where things could become a problem later on. So I'm just trying to think of things that we might be able to help keep things down so the game will run smoothly as possible for everyone. I know there are a lot of things to think about when it comes to all these things. However the tileset Hak's are what I'm currently working on right now so that is why this questions is only about tileset haks for now.

@Vanya I've never seen it with items or placeables either. What I do know is that the original CQ stuff definitely screwed with some of the ctp stuff and chico eventually changed it because of that.

@Tonden As your resources grow you might find a tool I wrote called "Orphan Hunter" to be of some use. It helps with managing textures.
