Custom Content Challenge: February 2017: Serpent Kingdoms

The theme for this month's challenge: "Serpent Kingdoms":

Challenge based on reptilian races from and outside D&D. Yuan-Ti, lizardfolk, saurials, sarrukh, nagas de classic D&D ones and the LOT5R ones; Hyborian serpent men, etc. Also could include some mighty creatures as giant snakes or lizards. Reptilian architecture, Reptilian holy symbols, snake-gods scultures...

This theme was suggested by Shemsu-Heru.

Guidelines:

  • It must be fully working in game.
  • Use of vanilla NWN or publicly available texture is fine.  Just remember that NWN textures must have dimensions in powers of 2 (2, 4, 8, 16, 32, etc.).
  • Teamwork is welcome.
  • Beginners most welcome. Don't be afraid, just try, you'll be surprised!
  • "Custom Content" includes many sorts of things: models, scripts, prefabs (areas, items, creatures, conversations, quests, etc.), sounds, portraits, or anything else new for the game.
  • All submissions must be finished, working, and emailed to NWNCCCMakers@gmail.com (or a non-Vault link provided) by March 1st, 2017. Sooner than that is perfectly fine too. ;-)

Some things you could include in the download/email that would make packaging everything up easier and faster:

  • 2da lines needed.
  • Screenshot from in game for use on the vault page (this also gives me hints on how to display the new goodie). Formats: .bmp, .jpg, .png, or .tga
  • Portraits (if needed) of your new goodie. Placeables and monsters should include a portrait.
  • Inventory icons (if needed) of your new goodie.
  • Any credits you would like listed.
  • If this is your first entry, please tell me what name you would like your work listed under and provide a link to your other NWN content if you want that displayed as well (the link bit is totally optional).

Remember, the Challenge is all about fun, sharing, creativity, and surprise!

This thread is for all sorts of discussion about this month's theme: ideas for things to make, questions/concerns, announcement of what you intend to make, screenshots of work in progress and/or finished projects.

If you want to discuss the Monthly Custom Content Challenge idea as a whole or wish to submit ideas/themes for future monthly Challenges, please post in its thread here

When submitting a new theme, please provide a title and short summary of the theme.

If you have a technical question about some custom content creation, please create a separate thread so that the answers can be found later by anyone, not just people interested in this Challenge.

We'll try to help!

Have no fear and join the fun!

Thanks for have chosen "Serpent kingdoms". I have prepared a complementary forum topic which could serve as source of inspiration for this challenge.

I have a few re-textured versions of BW's snakes (cobras) lying around, so I've packaged them up and sent them in for this month's CCC.

Before I started using Q lizardmen I've rretextured Asabi for my module needs - Asabi has a more... 'primal' look than vanilla NWN has so in my taste it fits better as a swamp lurking race.

Here is a conversion for NWN of a free model from: http://www.3dmodelfree.com/models/26781-0.htm
I have renamed it as "Yuan ti queen", it uses animations from the project Q medusas....

The sarrukh is the progenitor race of the "scaled ones" in the FR setting; However they are almost extinct now a days. Morag and her minions in OC of NWN are supposed be members of this race, the Sarrukh can shape-shifting betwen a bipedal form and a serpentine one....

http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Sarrukh

The creature have been made from a model at: http://www.cadnav.com/3d-models/model-36629.html - It uses project Q medusa's animations.

Polygons reduced with meshlab. They use animations from "Proyet Q" lycantropes and "Flying NPCs, Succubus, Erinyes, Vampires, and Kobolds" by "StoneMonkey".

Also includes a Pterran http://www.lomion.de/cmm/pterran.php, a creature with similar appearance from the "Dark Sun" setting....

Don't have anything as crazy as Zugoth's stuff, but I'm working on a Muckdweller (And potentially its big buddy as well). Just have to remember how to bloody muck about with alpha channels on Gimp as its not as easy to use as my previous stuff

Got some last-minute giant snake statues in the works. Currently setting up some columns to go with them and twirling 'em into different positions for variety. Still failing at making the use and impact nodes work. Am in need of placeable-node-setup-tutorial suited for DAU. :(

Small relatives of Lizardmen, Muckdwellers aren't the most impressive. While intelligent, they're not ones for much 'culture', prefering instead to hang around in small communities, or hang around larger, more powerful creatures such as Lizardmen. They are very much a 'might makes right' type of culture

"Temple of the Snake - entrance" as placeable model. Made from http://www.cadnav.com/3d-models/model-38263.html

It have no shadows; I have considered that the model is complex enough to cause problems with that....

Files are available here: https://neverwintervault.org/project/nwn1/hakpak/original-hakpak/custom-...

ZugothNDeadly's creature models are incredibly large files, so I did not include them in the hak.

Also decided to add a little something myself: Magic staves that look like cobras.

Hate to pester~, but it kinda looks like Zugoth's creatures won't render in NWNExplorer. Are they that complex, or is that not supposed to happen <_<

They are quite complex (lots of polys, skinmeshed, with tons of animation information built in), which is why I included them in the source download but not in the combined hak.

It took one of them nearly 5 minutes to load into gmax for me to look at (the giant anaconda, first one in alphabetical order by file name), and I even tried running them through CleanModels (took a day to get through 21 of 32, and it kept crashing on #22). I actually converted all the tga textures into dds, but couldn't optimize them myself for NWN beyond that.

Mine's working fine, so I suspect something went wrong in the DDS conversion. (Incidentally the reason why my textures are never in DDS when I send them in, as my touch is apparently poison to the DDS format.)

Want me to chuck the original tga files your way, or just wait for an update?

The original TGA files were in, and I converted them with DDS tools and tried again, but still the same. It's a mystery to me! :/

Try flipping the TGAs twice with TGAFlipper and see if that helps.   Linky:  https://neverwintervault.org/project/nwn1/other/tool/tga-flipper

shadguy let me know about something missing from the initial upload (all of Shemsu-Heru's stuff...I'd gotten the email but forgot to actually download the content). New versions of the files have been uploaded, so you can re-download them to get the missing goodies.

I opened up the TGA files and saved them as 24bits, non compressed then converted them to DDS - that made it work.
