10 Reasons why I like the new forums
Reasons I like the new forums (cross-posted on the new forums for comparison)

1. Drag and drop images
2. Metrics - I can see how many people have looked at a thread as well as how many replies there are etc.
3. I can tell at a glance whether the comments are for nwn or nwn2. No more hovering my mouse pointer over the link.
4. The ability to search by topics, posts, users or categories.
5. Way more emoji's.
6. At a glance keyboard shortcuts. It's accessed via the menu (3 horizontal lines next your avatar.
7. I actually have an avatar.
8. Updates to the main site software should have at worst limited effect on the new forums.
9. Built in spam prevention (well that's discourse's claim). Also, if the login regime stays as now, better spam-bot protection because of the extra click.
10. In version 1.9 the ability to see if someone comments on the thread you are commenting on at the same time.

Currently I am a moderator, how's this going to work with these new forums?

Valid objections

  • It's a new system meaning extra work
  • Limited integration with the current system meaning extra work for those maintaining the site
  • Initially at least, if we do go over to this the old threads won't be available in the new discourse forums.

Thoughts anyone?

"the old threads won't be available in the new discourse forums" That right there. We're on version 3-4 of official nwn forums, and each time we get moved stuff gets lost forever. Also you should already be able to tell if it's nwn1/2 because our forums are already separate.

Well, not everything is lost forever. The original Bioware forum is in NWN Omnibus. The Bioware Social Network was captured as an sql archive, I think. I'm willing to add BSN to the Omnibus if someone knows how to extract the html from the sql, but I had no takers when I last asked for help.

TR's point about nwn1 v 2 in this forum refers to the "all recent posts" view. To see nwn1 only, you have to drill into the forums one by one, which is even more tedious. The new forum is much superior.

p.s. the new forum isn't officially live yet so I hope people won't start posting there.

Honestly, I keep hoping that I find a the time to do a solid post migration, but that's many hours of work including testing, which I can't reasonably invest right now due to reallife commitments. Hence I'm dragging mt feet for weeks on this. That's the reason why I'm not asking for/moving towards a switch and they remain flagged as "new/pending". Ugly situation, but I'd rather have all the old data in somehow.

@Proleric

While that is true, they are there for testing purposes so there is nothing wrong with making the occasional post there. In fact there are a couple of interesting posts in the cross posted version of this thread over there. PHOD makes some interesting points in it.

Both the original nwn.bioware.com and the most recent BSN are available via the wayback machine as well. Unfortunately the middle BSN url appears to be being reused by EA and is therefore not on the wayback machine.

@niv I didn't start this thread to in any way make a criticism of you rather I was hoping to get some insight into how people feel on this subject and the concerns of those people who will have to deal with making it go live and the aftermath of that.

I'd poke at the new forums more if there were an easy link at the top of the page.  In the NWN7 theme, which I prefer, there is not. Switching themes to find the new forum is not going to happen often...

Another thing to add to the not sure of category.

Kama points - will they be made to work with the new forums?

Juat do it once, and save a link in your bookmarks/favorites. That's what i did.

Yes,  I could work around it in various ways.  That's not convenient and I won't think to do it often. That's my point.  If it's not as convenient as the current forums I won't ge to it...

Convenience you want, convenience you get. Click this link. Add the destination to your favourites/speed-dial and you are good to go.

I think you missed the point but thanks.  I'm perfectly capable of bookmarking the link specifcally to the new forum. What I want is a link off of the main vault page, which is where my toolbar button lands me.  That's the point. It's not a big deal ... I was just trying to point out that it's not right there in front of me as it would be if I used the light theme. My thought was it should be an easy fix.   Rather than have all of use who use the nwn7 theme have to work around it we could have the same ease of use that you do.

(and then maybe we can work on getting people not to use unreadable dark text colors :)

Cheers,

Meaglyn
