NWN2 S.T.E.P.

Guys, I finally got NWN2 to work as intended on my PC! I'm a veteran gamer and modder of the first game, and never got completely satisfied with the second one, because it didn't look and feel as the original. Stupid. Playing Dragon Ages and Mass Effects and so many others has changed my perspective on games in general and NWN2 in particular. However, as it is a very late hour to come and play this oldie but goodie game, I find myself confounded by mods. See, in the original NWN modding is a messy endeavor that requires a lot of micromanaging, You have to get dirty in order for it all to work correctly. I find in more recent games, adding mods has become a straightforward matter. For example, in both Dragon age Origins and 2 you just drop intended files in override, taking care they are compatible, and off you go. Thing is, I don't know where NWN2 falls in this spectrum, if it is a messy, file by file sort of thing like its prequel, or if it goes an easier route like later games. So I came here to ask the people who are hardcore modders and know everything there is to know about the game itself. I was hoping you could explain a little bit, maybe there is something like a S.T.E.P. guide for NWN2, a general tweaking guide for gamers, or just your personal reccomendations of mods for it, installing orders, etc. I usually don't ask about these things because I try to learn by experience, but this time I believe I am way overdue to start learning the ropes. I hope you can lend me a hand here. It will be much appreciated!

Modding NWN2 is probably as messy as it is for NWN because of the need to manage the various 2da data files when combining mods. Some members of the community have attempted to deal with the mess by producing merged mods with combined 2da files. Examples are PJ's Placeable Cornucopia, Kamal's tileset project, &c. Scripts are similar between the two games. There are some differences in the model and texture formats, but it is possible to port between the two games with a little work.

I don't know of a general S.T.E.P. Guide for NWN2. Perhaps others may?

If you're looking for something like a general "mod overview", here are good places to start your searches:

https://archives.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3548991#post...

If the link above doesn't work, here is a mirror (2nd post): http://www.rpgcodex.net/forums/index.php?threads/anyone-with-access-to-s...

Some links may be broken, since they lead to the Old Vault. But that's not the problem, as mods usually have the same names on the New Vault here. Besides, you can use search by the "Old Vault ID" (http://nwvault.ign.com/View.php?view=NWN2Category.Detail&id=XXX).

Thanks for the swift reply, guys! I am approaching NWN2 solely as a gamer for now, a user, not a modder. See, I want to try the game and its expansions, enjoy them throughly, and then decide whether I want to mod the game itself or not. This is standard procedure. What I am looking for is a guide like S.T.E.P. or TWEAKGUIDES, which give step by step instructions to reach the best possible graphical and interface options for any given game. There are S.T.E.P. guides for many modern games. The Elder Scroll and Fallout games have them. I didn't mean literally a NWN2 S.T.E.P., but to ask if you, NWN2 modders and players, had a step by step set of instructions, or at least suggestions as to what mods to include for the game. Again, this is just to enjoy the official modules for now, not to start modding the game myself yet. Are there complete graphic overhauls, like MEUITM for Mass Effect, or ALOT for Mass Effect 2? Dragon Age Origins had Redesigned, etc. What packs would be plug and play? Which are a most for modifications of textures, models, GUI, etc? That's what I am looking for, your input, your choices. I'm still going to dive into all of the available mods in the vault and nexus, but wanted to get your opinions first, seeing as you already know what's what.

Ah, thank you, Aqvilinus! That's pretty much what I was looking for, something to start one up on tweaks and mods for NWN2! I'm going through those presently. Just one more thing. I know this is not precisely pertaining to Custom Content forums, but I was wondering... is there a specific set of Classes/Attributes/Skills you can suggest for the most thorough completion. I ask this because in the original NWN certain Attributes/Classes/Skill levels were needed to access "hidden" conversation choices and places. Characters would react differently to different mixes between those. In Dragon Age games, this was much more simplified, and would only be a matter of Class/Race, and even then, you had mods that allowed you to actvivate the different class and race flags from within the game, so you could see the class/race specific content no matter what you played as. Most articles I've read say a perfect mix is Rogue/Fighter/Bard, but all of these suggestions are meant for fighting purposes, whereas I am interested in roleplaying, accessing everything in the game. Hope you can share a bit on the subject.

Oh man... couldn't get the SFX preset to work. Followed the steps in the readme but the game won't fire up. Still going through the modding guides Aqvilinus shared, though! There's so much to check and seize there, and it's just the start! Once I'm more familiar with the game, I will start going through the entire vault catalogue! Already managed to make it look  and behave more like both NWN1 and DAO, which was a welcome surprise.

Sorry to bother you guys again, but I have two doubts. First, can't get the Sweet FX thing to run. Tried following instructions, then different variations of the instructions, then total renaming of the preset and settings files, but nothing worked. I know this may not be the place to ask for help about injectors and such, but given the age of Neverwinter Nights 2, I doubt I can find help anywhere else. And second. I've been scouring the Vault for possible enhancements and overhauls to the game, but Lilura's and... u that oher guy's guides pretty much seem to have covered all available goodies of the sort, which is weird. One would expect a game as old as this to have plenty of overriding options; I think most of the custom content created for it deals with adding stuff to the game through hak paks and module building than actual overrding of default content. Please, if anyone can suggest, or knows of any armor/clothing/weapons/creature overrides/enhancements, I would be grateful. This whole NWN2 business is still pretty new to me and I'm solely interested in overriding content, not adding, at the moment.

Adding stuff to NWN2 is a big part of the draw for this community.

There are a number of mods to the OC available, but I don't think anybody has assembled an all-in-one essential OC enhancement pack. This looks like a pretty good list to start with though:

https://www.gnd-tech.com/threads/63893-Neverwinter-Nights-2-Essential-Mods

I'd probably consider adding: Kaedrin's PrC pack, Trees Texture Overhaul, Tony's Companion and Monster AI, NWN2 OC Makeover SoZ Edition, &c.

Thank you, Rjshae! Unfortunately, I've already gone through all of those in the previously posted guides by Aqvilinus. That's what I was talking about. The guides share the same options over and over, which leds me to believe that's pretty much all there is. Not that I'm complaining, but aside of the rebumped and remmaped packs for armors and cloacks, or the sharpened texture pack, there aren't many other overriding works for the game. Most are additions, rather than overrides, much like the first NWN. Again, hate to compare, but games like The Elder Scrolls, Mass Effect and Dragon Age are more about upscaling textures, upgrading models, etc. I think it's because of the building nature inherent to NWN, it invites to expansion rather than upgrading original content. Been checking the Vault for half a day, but I think outside of the guides, I've only downloaded an infinite spells 2da and, of course, the vitally useful NWN2 Leto.

If you are so interested, later I can make a list of all the mods I'm currently using with my game distribution. But you are right, there's no big variety among them, most mod builders concentrate their efforts on custom modules and PWs rather than improving things in OCs.

Note that some of the mods below "out from the box" conflict with each other and require manual editing\merging of *.2da\scripts\TLK\xml etc.

CORE MODS

Kaedrin's PrC Pack

I'm using Rasael's build, based on the older version 1.41.3, since it still contains Kaedrin's script source files unlike the last version 1.42.1, and therefore allows to modify a lot of things and keep different mods compatible with each other. Especially as I fixed some of the bugs and added new features introduced in the last version, so basically this build is almost identical to the new "official" version.

Again, hate to compare, but games like The Elder Scrolls, Mass Effect and Dragon Age are more about upscaling textures, upgrading models, etc.

Unfortunately, NWN2 has certain inherent performance and format limitations that will only allow you to upgrade it so far. The poly count and texture sizes may be smaller than what you're used to with subsequent games. I suspect it's never going to quite match the look of Skyrim or even Oblivion, for example. Possibly though if Xoreos is ever completed, that may be used to drive the game to a new level.

Thank you guys so much! Been going through all of the linked mods you shared Aqvilinus, and found many interesting ones I immediately installed, whilke others I am leaving to test later, once I've familiarized myself better with the game. All of your suggesitons and insight has been most helpful. I think I'm reayd now, prepared to actually play this modded game, and if I like it, will delve deeper into its custom content, just as I did with the original NWN. Hope others find this thread as useful as I have!

Oh! Almost forgot to ask! Been finding lots of nude packs, but I don't know which one would be best. Do you guys favor one over the other? It appears there are also several fix and texture packs for each as well...

Guys, I've been trying to use armors and clothing as override for the original ones, following the naming convention and idea of Always Summer, but they just refuse to appear in game. So, what gives? I rename them to stuff like P_HHF_CH_Body05.mdb and the like, put the whole pack in the override, but the models still fail to show in-game.

For female outfit to show, you need to have the male equivalent (even if it's a fake: just an MDB file with the p_hhM name will do).

Thank you for replying! Unfortunately, that didn't fix the problem, it only doubled it. Neither the female nor male bodies show. I'm thinking it has to do with the mdb file itself. In NWN1 some models didn't just work when being renamed, you had to use a text editor to replace all values of the name within the file. Perhaps something similar goes on with the mdb format, but I don't know if these can even be edited with a text app. Could be something entirely different, tho.

The packet names in an mdb file must be unique within the game. You'll need to use a tool like MDBConfig to edit that.

Err... I'm sorry... what? I have the configy thingama, but say, I'm trying to use a custom armor as a replacer for an original one: Chain shirt 2 for female, or both, if needed. So, I rename the mdb file, and then put what into the configy thingie?

Edit: Ah nevermind! I think I see what you mean. The armor is appearing in-game now! In essence, just to be sure, you have to do the same as you would a .mdl file for nwn1. You have to change the reference of the file to match what you renamed it to.
