Farlong and Away

I've been inspired by some of the excellent work being done recently to begin development of a new NWN2 campaign which focuses on the adventures of the Farlong brothers hinted at in the NWN2 OC conversations.  The player will be the fifth member of the original "Party of Five" as they travel from the Sea of Fallen Stars to the Sword Coast in the year 1345 DR, before the events of BG, NWN, and NWN2.

I'll be posting progress on my blog. The initial announcement post is here.

Regards

That's quite cool!

If you could, would it be possible to keep me appriaised of any plot developments involving Esmerelle and Shayla - I'd like either to incorperate where you take the plot into our campaign, (or at very least not contradict it), so players could play both campaigns seamlessly before and after the OC.

Also, if you need any help, let me know.  I'm not the greatest at coding, but I can handle art and grunt-work well-enough.

Good luck Kaldor ....

I read the blog and it sounds interesting. Keeping it so that the player does not feel they are being dragged along thorugh the story might be a challenge.

Farlong and Away takes place before BG, BG2, NWN, and NWN2 and so it can't really be an open sandbox. We all know where and in what state of mind the other party members end up. 1345 DR is pre-Time of Troubles, but there are still interesting things going on. And there are opportunities to meet people before they become who they are later. I'm researching the times (and tomes) heavily and hoping to come up with some fun optional quests.  I'm still in the earliest phase of planning, not building, so if anyone has any requests send them my way and I'll consider them.  That's exactly how Startear ended up being added into the MotB Makeover.

I'm wondering if I can enlist the aid of the community for something.  In order for this campaign to work I need someone to behead Duncan.  The body his head is attached to doesn't seem to allow any modification, unlike Daeghun, probably because they never intended Duncan to do anything more than stand around.  I need him to be a bit more lively, so I need his head transplanted I guess onto a human or half-elf bodytype. Is this even possible?

Now, bear in mind, I would not want someone spending a ton of time on it because at the moment while I have a bunch of ideas in my head and some on paper, I have a lot more planning to do before I even begin to develop any areas in the toolset.  It is possible that despite my intentions the campaign development will flounder.  Hopefully not. But I wouldn't want someone spending a lot of time on this only to see me fail.  Of course this also means I'm not really in a rush.

I'd rather not have to explain Duncan needing major plastic surgery (although I suppose I could just end the campaign with a bunch of rocks falling on his head... nah noone would believe that.) So if someone can help me with this I would be genuinely greatly grateful. So I say three times fast.

Any takers?

The man always was a ball of joy and happiness... ;)

Anyone available for a bit of surgery on Duncan?  Just a bit off the top!  :)

Facial damage would work, as would a very heavy beard and mask fetish. However I would really rather use his real head.

Thanks to cuiilv, Sabranic, and rjshae's MDBConfig tool I was successful at relocating Duncan's head onto a usable body.  So far so good. One roadblock removed thanks to the community!

There is no rush I'm sure all of us know that life can throw anybody a curve ball. Good luck Kaldor. I would like to ask one question if this takes place in 1345DR. then the Knight Captain could not be an Elf, Dwarf or Gnome can they? It isn't a big deal to me I'm just wondering? Thanks to the posts and good luck.

What we know from the NWN2 conversation is that Esmerelle traveled with Daeghun for a time, left when Daeghun settled in West Harbor, and then returned to West Harbor "thick with child" and died in 1359 DR. At least that is what Daeghun says. But we do not have to believe him.

Since I have decided to make the true identity of Esmerelle match an historical figure, her race is set to human. If she was truly the mother of the Knight Captain then this would mean that the Knight Captain would have to be human, half-elf, or half-orc, ruling out choices of full elf, orc, gnome, dwarf, or halfling.  To resolve this inconsistency with the OC I have decided that Daeghun is basically lying about the origin of the Knight Captain just a little.  Esmerelle returned to West Harbor not "thick with child" but "with child" and Daeghun never pressed her to find out if it was her child or not. Daeghun is a little ashamed of this and so he deceives his foster child. With this explanation the Knight Captain's race is not restricted by Esmerelle being human.

I had not planned to attempt to resolve any issues regarding the Knight Captain's age though. Whatever race he/she is we know that he/she was very young in 1359 and was ready to go adventuring 15 years later.

The OC had other issues with age, and year with respect to NWN 1 OC also. It was not my intention to cause headaches. I have a habit of playing Elven Wizards. Sorry about that, this module still sounds great. Thank you for answering my question.

There's really not many good ways around things like age/parentage other than Baldurs Gate style godly parentage. You can't have even as loosely defined history as the OC and allow the player to be any race. As soon as you identify the race of a timeframe of a parent you've locked things down.

The great thing about exposition that comes from people (especially those with personal stakes in the tale) is you open the door for lies, half truths or plain old human error (misremembering, being told wrong themselves, misinterpreting events from a skewed perspective, etc.). I actually like having conflicting reports of events where it is clear perspective resulted in very different tellings where all sides honestly think they are right.

Well if npc1 says something that means you are 20 years old, and npc2 says you are 120, which one is wrong depends on what race you selected. I suppose a builder could build into conversations based on pc's detected race. (Pc is elf) "120 years ago when you were born" (Pc is human) "20 years ago when you were born" But "you were born just after the Battle of the Mere of Dead Men" does establish a specific time/age.

Another thing to consider is that NWN2 launched so long ago that odds are most have completed it more than once on various races. I don't think you need to accommodate every possible Knight Captain at this stage if you want to pick something. Or pick a range of possibilities that all can fit one narrative.
