D20 Modern: Refreshed

I've been playing a lot of Baldur's Gate 1: Enchanced Edition (through Steam and about 50 hours in), and I have to say that the 2nd(?) AD&D rules is rough and tough. I'm playing with the core rules difficulty. It took me awhile to comphrend the THAC0 system works. Playing Baldur's Gate really helped me to clear my mind and got me thinking a lot on projects I want to do in the future. However! I want confer with you gals and guys about the modern tilesets. I started this project and want to finish it at least on a good note. So, let me explain what I'm going to do.

First off, yes, I have read of your gals and guys comments. I'm humbled by your advices but, truth is, I hate seeing my work unfinished because I'm stubborn like that. So, with a refreshed vigor, I decided to give this tileset a more suitable update. Succintly, I'll be primarily fixing the issues (most notably the walkmeshes) and cleaning up the models. All the awhile I have to be aware of the recurring issue: backwards compatibility. This means I can't the change the physical height of models or the location of doors. Here's a breakdown, but not necessarily in order, in what I'll do:

  • Model Cleanup. The models themselves are really messy. Putting into words is difficult but I'll describe it. Let's say you're modeling a house out of cubes, but you don't bother deleting parts of the geometry where the viewer will not see anyways. Which means I'll be deleting the unnecessary amount of faces, edges and vertices from the models. I may even combine and reshape the models but nothing too drastic they'll break the backwards compatibility. Plus, this'll help loading times to be quicker and less memory usage.
  • Resize and Realign. There's some of the textures are either too big or too small. And which leads the textures not being properly aligned. I may replace the textures, by using the ones currently in the hakpak, to give it a new look.
  • Lighting and Shadows. When you have a lightsource, for example a torch, you'll notice the lighting and shadows get oblique. This is more noticeable on sidewalks and streets. Where it's half-light and half-shadow. This is because that a) there isn't enough faces to distribute the shadows or b) the faces aren't registering the light properly.
  • Redo the Walkmeshes. You know... walking straight up the hostipal wall and you're on the roof. Or, while on the roof, you click the ground down below and you're on the ground level. Or the police station has a door but you can't up the stairs. The walkmeshes have no real indiction where the player can and can't walk on.
  • Animations. I notice there's lit windows for some of the buldings. I'll get those to work too but I need a refresher course in how to do animations.
  • Additions. Once I've got everything done, I can add one to a few features and groups of my own. For instance, for the slums, I can add a collapsed or burnt section of a corner, add another store window, add a door, or an AC unit on the roof, to name a few. Then I can add in the construction site and such.

"What about those remodels?" you ask. Well, I will most likely may hold on to them for my future projects. Please remember that I'm primarily fixing the issues. Until then, I want to play Baldur's Gate for a few more hours and get started again.

Got a question, suggestion or comment? Let me know.

Please can you use a larger font for your blog? Even on my 24" monitor I almost have to squint to read it. I dread to think how it looks on smaller screens.

Thanks.

It's great that you are doing this. yes

If you want to release early tests to me without going public then I have plenty of modules where I can check reverse compatability for you.

I'm humbled, thanks. Understood and you'll be the first to be informed of early testing. Should I inform you PM or on my blog for early testing?
