"Underdark teeming with activity," says Drow Ranger

Word of my demise in the NWN community has been somewhat misleading. While I haven't been active in CCC challenges, I have been quietly watching from behind my books.

I've also been working heavily on the Middledark Tileset, and while I won't show any pictures today, I have made some substantial progress. Having last been on here talking about Sword Coast Legends, I got fairly deep into building arrays of placeables in a mid to high poly range. They're mostly for static use, but also for use as parts in a unity-engine way of constructing tilesets.

So far I've created a number of:

  • Arches
  • Rocks
  • Pillars
  • Boulders
  • Speleothems
  • Pools
  • Rimstone
  • Wall sections

In addition to meshes, I've been hard working at creating a large block of textures to use with the Middledark set. So far I'm up to 32 textures for use as walls and for wrapping boulders. Each texture is 20482 and all follow generally the same color scheme. I've modeled a lot of my content on some of the high quality "Top Down" series for unity engine, so I've had to modify some older textures to get them to look better on these higher poly models.

Because the poly count is higher, and I don't want to upset the shadows in NWN's clunky shadow system, I've developed a MaxScript to remove any faces obscured entirely inside other meshes. I'll post this shortly so others can use it to clean up high poly static models with way too many faces. Now that I finally understand multivariable calculus, I can make a lot more scripts like this, and my automatic tileset makers.

Speaking of the automation, I've developed a set of scripts for my underdark tiles which create a cavern complex based on a flat walkmesh. I can now make my 3x3 or 6x6 tilegroups and extrude up walls and a ceiling for the cavern which is both moderate poly count, and does not obscure walkpaths.

I've got half the summer left, and plenty of time in the morning and late night to work on this tileset, so I'd like to release it sometime before, or shortly after I return to class in the fall.

Pictures to follow in my next post!
