Before Final - Module Creation From a Player's Perspective Migrate Wizard 2015-11-09 3 years 9 months ago

I have downloaded and played through quite a few modules now and have observed quite a few common threads, both good and bad, that have appeared in most of the modules. So, in part to aid those module builders out there, here are some things that I think will help you minimize some of the nastier comments I've seen (and made).

Beta Be Prepared! Migrate Wizard 2015-11-09 3 years 9 months ago

Picture a scene familiar to many of us - several oddly-clad folk sitting around a table that's always too small, character sheets blanketing the surface, multi-colored polyhedron dice gleaming like gems abandoned by Snow White's septet of dwarves, all eagerly discussing the transformation of a beloved game into what promises to be one of the most amazing computer games ever created. We talk of the upcoming Beta and all hope to be included, but I am struck by the thought, "Are we really ready for Beta and all that it entails?"

If you're as much of a DnD junkie as my gaming cohorts and I are, your immediate response is an emphatic affirmative. Let's consider, just for a moment, all that the Beta test will require of those lucky enough to be selected by the BioWare crew.

Building a Better Mousetrap - The Villain in Neverwinter Nights Migrate Wizard 2015-11-09 3 years 9 months ago

I recently edited an article written by Michael Barjin at Neverwinter Vault called “The Nature of Villains.” The goal of his article was to describe how a module builder might “create a good villain”. He gave tips on what to think about when creating a villain for Neverwinter Nights: the background (what created the villain); the motivation (what does the villain want); and the play (what to do with your villain).

Even though English is not Michael’s first language, his article did make me think about the opportunity that we will have as creators with Neverwinter Nights. In literature and especially in movies, the reader or moviegoer connects with the villain in various ways. This connection creates an emotional attachment for the viewer (or reader). When done well, the antagonist can raise the level of the work involved to a higher level.

One of the greatest draws of Neverwinter Nights is the opportunity for game designers or Dungeon Masters to create stories that others can play through and enjoy. One of the greatest challenges with Neverwinter Nights will be to create villains that will stir the hearts of our players. What follows is an attempt to address this challenge, and it will be presented in three parts

Bessie the Vampire Slayer Migrate Wizard 2015-09-24 3 years 9 months ago

The following story is based on a true event. I was playing "The Spires of Ravenloft" mod with a friend and I charmed an ox to follow me around. The ox followed me into Ravenloft itself and turned out to be quite a fighter. I expanded on the incident and then wrote the following story. Before this comes up... some cows do have horns, it depends on the species.

Bishop Romance (Not Named Yet) Migrate Wizard 2015-10-20 3 years 9 months ago

"To hell with Tora. To hell with Tora and her sexy, blood red lips. To hell with Tora and her thin, alabaster body. To hell with Tora and her ice-colored eyes that burned with violence even when there was no emotion on her pretty face. And especially, to hell with Tora for her forgiveness in a moment when she should have cut Bishop’s throat. He didn’t need her. He didn’t need anyone."

A romance story between my PC and Bishop, set after the OC ending. Half romance and half adventure- not finished yet.

Black Tree Chronicles - Birth of Curse Migrate Wizard 2015-10-07 3 years 9 months ago

Stood in the middle of open market, burnt, twisted and decayed yet still had the will to grow; the Black Tree was a dreadful plant. The branches and grey leaves moved as the gust of wind came into the ruins of Merchant Quarter.

Blade in the Dark Migrate Wizard 2015-09-29 3 years 9 months ago

The forest of Cormanthor was host to many different and often dangerous creatures. Theris did not know that the drow inhabited the haunted wood as well.

He almost didn't see it coming. The glint of a drawn weapon, however, alerted him to the danger he and his party were in. He immediately turned to his allies, Zartek and Djarunen, and cocked his head to his left where he saw the approaching encounter. The others nodded their heads and they readied for a fight.

Bleed Migrate Wizard 2015-10-14 3 years 9 months ago

Yus, another extremely mediocre poem. Didn't spend as much time on this one as the last poem, but I'm happy with how it turned out. Comments, votes, and (definetely) suggestions welcome.

Keep the sanity to the limit,

Blood and Silver Rolo Kipp 2013-04-18 6 years 5 months ago Hundreds of feet above the dark, hidden land, with starlight and moonbeams streaming across silver wings, a lithe form reveled in the freedom of flight, his eyes half closed in pleasure. The wind whistled in his ears, an eerie counterpoint to the harmonic being hummed in his massive throat, as the ground sped past beneath him.
Blood for the Dead ChaosQueen_Kara_8 2015-10-14 3 years 11 months ago

A vampire is not always a product of a desire to live forever, and this story examines how sometimes loneliness, and remorse, can drive a soul to darkness.

Bloodcat Rolo Kipp 2013-04-18 6 years 5 months ago

Damned sun! Even through the heavy fog he could feel the furnace heat coming around the corner of the world.

This is an unpolished (but finished) story that takes place somewhere in the world that I created. It was written as a means of showing off the actions and abilities of Magic, in this case the Elemental Magic of Earth. There will be 6 of these stories, for the 6 forms of magic: The four Elements (Air, Earth, Water, Fire), Spirit, and Nature magic. The four elements, are, as usual for elemental magic, tied together somewhat, although in a slightly different manner: Air opposes Fire, and Earth opposes Water. Spirit and Nature magic are entirely different, one based on the existence of the spirit world (think Greek Hades, as a general guide), and Nature magic, which is very totemic in nature. This story will be published in 15 installments.

This is part one of the story of Earth. This takes place in a more defined setting, the city of Tri-Hauwcerton, more easily called the city of Earth. It lies in the North and West, cupped by the valley of a great mountain range.

I ended up choosing an image that represented Chloddio's love of the high mountains

Celestial Fire - Page One Migrate Wizard 2015-09-30 3 years 9 months ago

The fluid landscape shimmered in the cold darkness of night. This surreal planes surface glowed under the unnatural mauve sky, its crystalline rock formations towering upward scraping the sky with their jagged edges. This realm of existence was devoid of life in all its multitude of forms yet on its livid surface walked a figure, garbed in long flowing robes that glistened from the starlight above. The figure stalked warily across the alien landscape.

Large dirt encrusted and blood gored claws came down upon the unlucky rouges and the Constable. Beran parried the mighty blow with her steel blade severing a claw from the Ankheg's bulky carapace, milky yellow blood sprayed from the open wound coating Beran in its sickly stench. Aki began conjuring a bolt of fire to incinerate the attacking beast; the magic sparked around Akis hair with sparks igniting the air with the pungent after taste of ozone. Grumly however in his normal courageous self began stabbing at the Ankheg's lower regions.

I can almost remember my Parents.. its was a long time ago.. more like I can feel there essence in that last goodbye. A while back my parents and I lived on a farm where it was quiet and beautiful. My father was a excellent Farmer and his garden grew with food to eat and many strange flowers who's scents would make you swoon as if you overate on a Warm summer day, and needed a good nap in the sun. My Mother was so strong it seemed nothing hurt her, whenever I got hurt or almost got into trouble, there She would be to protect me in Her arms. I still miss that feeling.

All of a sudden it was over my parents and I was on a ship with lots of other people. My father and mother didn't seem to have much time for me, they seemed to be more worried about the other kids and there parents. When I started to cry about this my mother kindly said "Remember my little tornado your heart is stronger than you think and this will pass, but your father and I need to help those who cant take care of themselves".

Bounty Hunters in Persistent Worlds - A Study on NPCs in Neverwinter Nights (Part One) Migrate Wizard 2016-03-26 3 years 5 months ago

I would like to preface this article by stating that this will not cover actual scripting and the language, as this is knowledge not made public in any completeness whatsoever. Instead, I will be rambling on about the theory and technique to be applied through these scripts to achieve the sorts of dynamic effects and interesting NPC interactions that will separate your world from the rest.

The problem with creating a working script, and what stymies most potential “script wizards” (a term I hope catches on) is not the idea, which is the easy part, or knowing the syntax and definitions of the code. Instead, it is designing the process that the script will move through in it’s execution. In other words, how do you get from Point A to Point B. These articles will tell you how to do this in the best way I know of…an example. The first chapter, which you are reading now, will be about the theories involved.

The next installment will get a little more technical, talking about the variables affected in this situation. Lesson 3 will present a C script showing you the whole thing in a simulated (meaning corny, text-based, nothing like what it will be like) Neverwinter Nights world. Then, after the release of the game, I will make the final installment, which will be using NWScript.h and will actually work in a persistent world.

Bounty Hunters In Persistent Worlds - A Study on NPCs in Neverwinter Nights (Part Two) Migrate Wizard 2016-03-26 3 years 5 months ago

In the first part of this discussion, I laid out an ambitious plan for implementing a NPC Bounty Hunter in a persistent world. I would like to thank everyone who gave me constructive criticism on the article. The main thought relayed was on the complexity of the matter at hand. I think I have a unique perspective on the abilities of NeverWinterNights and NWScript. I view it as an envelope.

Within the envelope will be the functions created by the wizards. Here is your NPC. On a radius trigger around him, he converses with you. If he doesn't get the answer he wants, he attacks. So on and so forth. On the edge of the envelope will be modifications of the scripts created by the wizards. Adding a little spice to the game, so to speak. I want to exist on the other side of the envelope, developing fantastic situations and making the scripting language conform to it. You have probably heard managers or efficiency experts refer to this as thinking "outside the box." Well, that's what I want to do. These are articles to show you not specific ways to code new ideas, but instead how to stucture your thoughts to make it work.

The Brother of Earth is connected with the earth it self. The Brother of Earth finds himself in league with any characters. The Brother of Earth is usually a disciple of an earth deity.
