Prophecy of the Talisman - Chapter One (Page Eight) Migrate Wizard 2015-10-04 4 years 2 months ago

Jeran knew he had to act fast. Even though Kal'im looked stable as he held his brother above the deadly precipice, Jeran knew it would be impossible to hold him forever. The rope bridge on which they stood was not the ideal place to attempt a rescue. With only a thick rope on which to balance, and a second rope to hold onto, Jeran searched for an idea on how to help them both. He was not near as agile as Kal'im and wasn't about to let go of the bridge. Suddenly he came up with a plan. Removing a rope from his backpack, he tied one end to the bridge and let the other end fall to Kerli below.

Prophecy of the Talisman - Chapter One (Page Eleven) Migrate Wizard 2015-10-04 4 years 2 months ago

"Split up and take cover!" Jeran yelled as he raced for the closest recess in the rock that would offer some protection. As Jeran dove for cover, a shower of large hailstones pelted the area where he had been only moments before. Catching his breathe, he peered over the safety of the rock face to catch a glimpse of his comrades. Kal'im had found a similar recess to hide in while Kerli had pressed himself into a small nook against the rock face from where the attacks were coming from.

Prophecy of the Talisman - Chapter One (Page Fifteen) Migrate Wizard 2015-10-04 4 years 2 months ago

Kerli pleaded with Ellion to tend to his brother first, despite the dire consequences should Jeran die. As Ellion limped to where Jeran lay, Kerli clenched his fists in rage and returned to where his unconscious brother lay on the ground. Deep blue and purple bruises circled round Kal'im's throat, a reminder of Berac's vicious assault. Kerli pleaded with Kal'im's inert form, begging him to wake.

Prophecy of the Talisman - Chapter One (Page Five) Migrate Wizard 2015-10-04 4 years 2 months ago

"I agree." Jeran replied to her plan of attacking the beast.

Jeran could see the fire in Lysana's eyes. She wanted to exact revenge on the beast that had killed her friend, and was eager to attack it now as it devoured the corpses. Thoughts of his own dead father and brother flashed in his head as he unsheathed his sword and readied for battle, though a small part of him had misgivings of what they were about to attempt. This was not simple prey they were about to engage; this creature had broken through brick walls and removed the marble lids of coffins like they were made of paper. Still he could not turn back now, for this creature might be connected to the monster he sought and they might not get a better chance than this.

Prophecy of the Talisman - Chapter One (Page Four) Migrate Wizard 2015-10-04 4 years 2 months ago

Ammilan had just told them that he hadn't seen anything out of the ordinary, but Lysana didn't seem convinced. Pulling Jeran aside to not offend Ammilan, she suggested that they continue to search the cemetery. Nodding grimly, Jeran followed her to where she last saw the creature that killed her friend.

Prophecy of the Talisman - Chapter One (Page Fourteen) Migrate Wizard 2015-10-04 4 years 2 months ago

"Damn!"

As the wounded spider raced away from him Jeran knew that his victory was close at hand. Instead of finishing the task at hand, he chose to let the beast escape for his friends needed help. Turning around he saw Kerli trying to revive Ellion, while Kal'im attempted to keep Berac occupied by launching a continuous assault against him. It was obvious to Jeran that Kal'im could not keep Berac at bay forever; he was tiring and slowly loosing the offensive.

Prophecy of the Talisman - Chapter One (Page Nine) Migrate Wizard 2015-10-04 4 years 2 months ago

As Kerli finished tracing the topmost design etched into the ancient rock arch, it began to emit a bright yellow light. Startled Jeran asked, "Kerli what did you just do?"

"I feel as though I recognize this symbol," Kerli explained. "I thought tracing it with my finger would help be remember."

Prophecy of the Talisman - Chapter One (Page One) Migrate Wizard 2015-10-03 4 years 2 months ago

"Death has wrought greater change than any force ever known. Whereas the flesh may return to the earth, what happens to the spirit, if it exists?
Can the consequences of actions here on this plane, be by those of another? I fear, only in death will I know the answer, or will I?"

Prophecy of the Talisman - Chapter One (Page Seven) Migrate Wizard 2015-10-04 4 years 2 months ago

Jeran was looked down at the man who had just stated in a threatening manner, that he blamed the man who had last fought beside Lysana for her death. Unfortunately that man was Jeran himself! He knew he had committed no wrong, and was prepared to refute the accusation.

Prophecy of the Talisman - Chapter One (Page Seventeen) Migrate Wizard 2015-10-04 4 years 2 months ago

Jeran's heart began pounding in his chest with such abandon that he feared it may burst. Events around him seemed to be spinning out of control. Not only had the hated shapeshifter been healed before his eyes, but the one event he had been told to fear had occured, Saravan had the Talisman! Jeran had but seconds to act, and his stomach told him that any decision he now made would not end well.

Prophecy of the Talisman - Chapter One (Page Six) Migrate Wizard 2015-10-04 4 years 2 months ago

It had only been a few minutes since Berac had left but Jeran couldn't take it anymore. He was running out of air and the confines of the coffin felt like they were closing in on him. Knowing that his life depended on it, Jeran screamed aloud and banged against the coffin with his hands and feet. Sweat dripped down his forehead and his lungs burned as Jeran tried to fight off the anxiety that was slowly building up inside of him. "Was this the end?" a small part of him thought as he struggled to stay aware.

Prophecy of the Talisman - Chapter One (Page Sixteen) Migrate Wizard 2015-10-04 4 years 2 months ago

They had been following the trail of blue ooze left by the spider for almost an hour. During several occasions, they lost the trail, as presumably she had taken to the rock walls, but it wasn't long before the ooze could be seen against a rock face and again continuing along the path. Jeran felt this was a good sign that she was severely hurt, and he hoped to find her dead, ending his quest for retribution.

Prophecy of the Talisman - Chapter One (Page Ten) Migrate Wizard 2015-10-04 4 years 2 months ago

Having just returned from the rope bridge at Herordrun's gorge, the group contemplated which design to choose next.

"Wait a minute! I seem to remember learning of this fourth symbol during my studies," Jeran exclaimed.

"Hmm. Looks like the sun rising over the horizon," answered Kerli examining it more closely.

Prophecy of the Talisman - Chapter One (Page Thirteen) Migrate Wizard 2015-10-04 4 years 2 months ago

"So you think it might have gone back to Blackmor?" Jeran asked of Ellion.

"It seems the logical conclusion, but we have yet to find any sign of Saravans base there."

"Then what are we waiting for?" Kerli exclaimed. Quickly touching the design, he stepped through the arch. The rest of the party quickly followed and instantly they were in a forest. All the trees were bare of leaves, their limbs twisted and broken. There was a low mist surrounding them making it almost impossible to see.

Prophecy of the Talisman - Chapter One (Page Three) Migrate Wizard 2015-10-03 4 years 2 months ago

Night turned to early morning before Jeran was able to free his mother from the webbing that bound her. Picking her up gently, he moved her back into her bed and prepared something for her to drink.

"What happened mama?" Jeran asked ask he sat beside her, and helped her sip the hot tea.

Prophecy of the Talisman - Chapter One (Page Twelve) Migrate Wizard 2015-10-04 4 years 2 months ago

Ellion stood up and looked towards the North. "I must leave you. Dar'shan has probably survived my attack and now would be the best time to finish him."

"What hell has spawn these creatures?" Jeran asked.

Prophecy of the Talisman - Chapter One (Page Two) Migrate Wizard 2015-10-03 4 years 2 months ago

The slap was hard, but Jeran was not a small boy. Standing just over six feet, he was strong and muscular compared to those his age, but when it came to his father, his heart was but an eggshell and his father had just crushed it by striking him. Yes, he wanted to be treated like a man, but striking him could not go unanswered. Years of being subservient, boiled a rage deep inside Jeran and like a dam breaking, Jeran sprung to his feet and struck his father in the face.

Players - What Makes Them Tick? Migrate Wizard 2015-11-11 4 years 2 months ago

Everyone loves a good story. It's what great DM's eat for breakfast. The stories we write, in a way, reveal to our audience (ie, our players) who we are and what we stand for in this life. The critical path of great stories is the development of empathy, and understanding, of the story's central participants and their varied circumstances. A good story takes us out of our own lives and puts us in someone elses' lives and allows us to come away with a greater understanding of ourselves in the process. But everyone finds their own meaning differently through the myriad of characters portrayed therein, and not always necessarily from the Protagonist, ie: "good guy." We sometimes like a movie, or a book, because of the bad guy. The bad guy helps us to define more clearly why we--for the most part--continue to stay and be good, for he is one more example of what we must never become. (Or, if you're bad yourself, the bad guy allows you to relate to someone.)

Project Dialogue Migrate Wizard 2015-11-11 4 years 2 months ago

A few weeks ago, I was trying to think about how the official campaign could have been improved upon, and I realized there's something that has been lost in the evolution of RPG games as far as BioWare handles it. I'm speaking of the dialogue between NPC characters and the more I think about it, the more I'm beginning to dislike the dialogue box. Yes it works very well, and the conversation editor in the toolset makes it really quite easy, but it's the closed system aspect of it that I think bothers me the most. By that I mean, the limited number of choices steering you through a set path.

Raising the Stakes - Tension is a Good Thing Migrate Wizard 2015-11-11 4 years 2 months ago

"Drama is life with the dull bits cut out." -Alfred Hitchcock

Everyone loves a good story, and in a roleplaying game, players get to be part of the story. Good stories, whether on film, in a book, in life or in games, need dramatic tension. By dramatic tension I mean anything that makes our hearts beat faster, and I’d argue that love and sex may do this in life, it rarely works that way in RPGs! So I think dramatic tension comes from having something at stake. When you care about something happening, and it might not go the way you want, you experience dramatic tension.

Rating System Editorials - Bayesian Method Migrate Wizard 2015-11-11 4 years 2 months ago

In short, the Bayesian method takes into account both the average score a module has received, and the total number of votes counted. Specifically, the more votes a module receives, the more "reliable" we may consider that average score to be (since more people agree on that score).

This doesn't mean that more votes always translates into a higher placement, however: if two mods have the same score and it is a low score, then the mod which has more votes will actually be placed lower in the rankings.

The technical details behind the Bayesian method are at the end of this article, but first let me address the pros and cons of the method.

Rating System Editorials - Trimmed Mean Migrate Wizard 2015-11-11 4 years 2 months ago

Trimmed Average or Trimmed Mean:

(From my old Statistics book) : Trimmed Mean is a comprimise between (True) Average and Median.

While True Average uses all data points (votes on our case) to determine a representative value for the set of data, Median excludes all values but the 1 to 2 "middle" values and uses this value(s) to determine the representative value. Trimmed Average of a data set excludes the highest and lowest X% of the data points and takes the average of the remainder.

This series of tutorials is an example for new DMs who want to create a setting for their modules. In Part I: The Setting, we described the creation of the kingdom of Heirokanth as the setting for our campaign. In Part II: The Synopsis, we put forth the basics of our story. Now we must take the next step by integrating our setting and story synopsis into a critical path map.

Sample Module Design - The Setting (Part One) Migrate Wizard 2015-11-13 4 years 3 months ago

As explained in my previous article in module creation, Getting Started, there are five main ingredients in making a module: Setting, Synopsis, Critical Path, NPCs, and Maps. This tutorial is an example for new DMs who want to create a setting for their modules. Together we will see the creation of a module in the kingdom of Heirokanth, and in future tutorials we will create a story and add the other ingredients necessary to complete a module.
