Chapter One - Aribeth The Willing Migrate Wizard 2015-10-03 4 years 5 months ago

I stepped through the portal and didn't look back. Bright light blinded me as I appeared back at Castle NeverWinter.
My tasks were done. My journey...finished, or has it just begun?

Chosen of Eilistraee Migrate Wizard 2015-09-30 4 years 5 months ago

The soothing notes of a harp danced through the fresh morning air. Like a fairy causing ripples on a clear, spring pond it touched upon the children already out to play in the orange gleam of the dawn sun. Swirling through the open doors and windows of the small hamlet, it moved around the cobbler' s workplace, defied the beat of the smith's hammer and pulled the people from their homes. As tendrils of smoke spreading from house to house it soon had all those able standing in the street to see the source of the pleasant music.

Countless Nights Migrate Wizard 2015-10-16 4 years 5 months ago

Everyone of us once lost a loved one. Everyone of us has felt the aching beat of your heart when memories of that loved one pour into your mind. We feel lost, thinking this feeling will never go away.

And it is this feeling that remains the longest, and is ever so cruel. I have lost many loved ones in my life, would it be by eternity or merely out of sight. And even though the pain gets less, our mind is heir to it and it will forever remain in our memories. Read this, as a remembrance of your loved ones. As I have written this, in dedication to my loved ones. Sober it is, but attention to the pain it causes is vital, or we find ourselves sheltered from reality.

Feel free to use it, or comment (constructive) on it. I would love to hear what such users as yourself feel and think while reading this, and your experience. Please vote as well, so I could have a reflection of the users' opinion.

Crowe Migrate Wizard 2015-10-03 4 years 5 months ago

There was nothing special about Rhobert Crowe. Born in the village of Denier, along the White River, he was the last of six children, one of four brothers, and the bearer of his grandfather's name. Rhobert was the scapegoat of his siblings throughout his childhood, known for his mischievousness and roguish pranks. There was a joy like no other when he heard the startled scream of his sisters as he slunk upon them. Life around his family's farm was rather ordinary, if not competitive. Over the years, the rivalry of his siblings to gain their parents support pushed Robert at an increasing distance from his family. By the age of seventeen, he left them to bicker themselves to death and try to discover more about the world.

Crusaders of Allishire - Chapter One (Part One) Migrate Wizard 2015-09-26 4 years 5 months ago

Screams of anguish and fear come from inside a small house in the woods. A young girl sits in a corner in the basement of the small house. Hair tousled, tears running down her face, she cries out knowing no one can hear her. She knows not what to do except to sit there and cry. She looks across the room and stares blankly at the wall. Her tears drop down her face, dripping to her lap as she recalls the screams from before.

Crusaders of Allishire - Chapter One (Part Two) Migrate Wizard 2015-09-26 4 years 5 months ago

The look of his face, the color of his hair, the red of his eyes were all more than enough to cause Ilana to cry and wish there was a way out of her predicament. If the Gods still existed, she would pray to them for help, but she knew she would not get any help from there. Even finding a Cleric was rare enough, much less an avenger of good, a Paladin. But Ilana knew her fate was decided now. She was to become a slave to this horrible, fat, disgusting man.

Deja-Vu Migrate Wizard 2015-09-26 4 years 5 months ago

Sham's brow furrowed in thought. There it was again. That damned door. Surely he had passed this way before? Many times. He took a deep breath and, with his leather armour creaking, settled himself down in front of the door. He placed his long-sword on the ground next to his right hand and fumbled in one of his pouches for the lock-picks and tools that he would need to open the lock on the door.

Demon Eye - Part One Migrate Wizard 2015-10-08 4 years 5 months ago

Truth be told, I should have left town then. I had obviously been targeted as a rich sheep to be sheared by the local criminal element. They certainly wouldn’t give up trying to relieve me of my wealth just because I tossed one out a window. In fact, they might even take it personally. The best course of action would have been to pack up my things and move on.

However...I was insulted.

Demon Eye - Part Three Migrate Wizard 2015-10-10 4 years 5 months ago

Everything in sight was aflame, including me. My clothes were gone in seconds. It as if we stood in the midst of a roaring campfire, shrunken to the size of insects. It was terrifying, even though I’d been through it before. I could only imagine what the others were feeling. Then suddenly, through the fire and billowing black smoke, strode Hahzak.

Where Damut was a monster, Hahzak was something else. He was tall and hideous; every inch of him aflame, but he stood as a god amongst sheep. His chest was thrust out and his arms thrown back; flame dripped from his fingertips and streamed from his mouth like vomit. His single eye burned yellow as fired gold. I had the sinking feeling I’d not seen him at his best the first time we’d met.

Demon Eye - Part Two Migrate Wizard 2015-10-09 4 years 5 months ago

Erin’s story was impressive, to say the least. It began with a nameless adventurer stealing a ruby the size of a melon from an evil shrine in a dark, southern land. Evil shrines were as common as flies down south, so that wasn’t much of a stretch, but this was a particularly nasty place and the theft was a thing of legend. I could attest to that since I’d actually heard the story myself. It was a much coloured tale by the time it reached my ears of course; full of supernatural monsters, human sacrifices, and all sorts of nasty business.

More surprising was: she proposed that the tale was largely true.

Checklists for a Quality Module Migrate Wizard 2015-11-12 4 years 5 months ago

Creating a quality NWN module is both an art and a science. This article attempts to outline some simple module creation guidelines that may help aspiring module builders improve the quality of their work. Let me make clear that this article covers the fundamentals of creating an enjoyable module. And let me say that rules are made to be broken, including the guidelines I lay out below.

Creating A World - Part One ("Where do I begin?") Migrate Wizard 2015-11-09 4 years 6 months ago

The upcoming game NWN promises to offer experienced as well as novice DMs a never before available opportunity to share their creations with a broad audience across the world. It is important that we go about world creation in as structured and well thought out way as possible. Here are a few of my thoughts on the things to keep foremost in mind.

Deployment and Installation of Custom Content in NWN2 Migrate Wizard 2015-11-12 4 years 5 months ago

There are several ways to get custom content into the game, but not all are equal. Some have advantages over others and some can actually break your game install making you unable to patch your game. This document will describe various methods and highlight best practices.

Information valid for minimum game version: 1.04.

Designer Reference Tables – Part One (Hit and be Hit) Migrate Wizard 2015-11-09 4 years 5 months ago

As suggested in a reply to my editorial “A Pen & Paper Perspective”, the following printable tables are intended to supply the module designer or DM with a quick “reality check” and an easy comparison on the mathematical probability (note: NOT some “challenge rating” but plain mathematical chances) for some generic character builds to handle melee enemies.

Note that the whole picture gets a LOT more complicated once magic and all kinds of special abilities enter the picture, but at the core the D&D system is a simple mathematical simulation based on 3 core stats: Armor Class (AC), Attack Bonus and hit points. A simulated fight is won by depleting an enemies hitpoints before he depletes yours. At the bottom, that’s all there is to it. The expected outcome of any given melee fight can be calculated by comparing the chances to hit, the average damage and the opponents’ hitpoints. If this mathematically expected outcome is against the player, the only way to “win” is either plain dumb luck (good die rolls – in other words: reloads) or gaining some other advantage.

And though there are lots of other possible edges to gain (some strategic, many by AI exploit, some by spending resources on short term boosts) they are hard to predict and there’s no way to know in advance what (if any) will be at the player’s disposal.

So as it seems that a huge percentage of community modules are made with melee characters in mind (and, way too often, badly balanced for most of those J) the following tables should serve as a quick reference for the pure simple maths behind it.

Combining HAK Packs Soren 2015-11-13 4 years 6 months ago

Hakpaks are much like conventional file archives, like those made with WinZip. They are a number of compressed files combined into a single file. NWN will allow only one hakpak per module, so this is why hakpak combining often is needed. We cannot add custom content in an acceptable way without hakpaks.

You might know many things in this tutorial already, but I've tried to make it understandable to even the newest newbie. I hope that it will answer a lot of questions that you have about this subject. And keep in mind that English is not my native language, so spelling and grammar may be a bit fussy.

Conversation Tutorial Migrate Wizard 2015-11-12 4 years 6 months ago

It's perhaps the easiest quest of all to imagine - PC meets NPC, NPC has lost item, PC fetches item, NPC is happy, and rewards PC. It should be trivial to do this in the NWNToolset. But wait! It looks like it needs scripting! Yikes! I know no programming!! What can I do? Who can help? There's no documentation! PANIC!

Conversation Tutorial - Part Two Migrate Wizard 2015-11-12 4 years 6 months ago

In my first tutorial, you learnt how to build a simple 'Go fetch!' quest using the Conversation Editor and the Script Wizard, without having to actually write a single line of code. In Part II, you will learn how to add Journal entries for your quest, and how to make your module multi-lingual. We will make a simple modification to change the quest from a 'Go fetch!' to a variation on the 'Go kill!' theme. While we're at it, we'll look in on Area Transitions, and the Faction Editor on the way.

Design of Area (Area Lighting, Sound, and Design Tricks) Migrate Wizard 2016-03-26 4 years 1 month ago

A while back I was asked by Maximus to share a few little tricks of lighting and design that were used in Tragedy in Tragidor area layout for those who were planning on building modules of their own to add a little bit of spice to BioWare tilesets. If there is one thing I would like to do, it's to give something to the module building community that other module builders can use to make full use of the tilesets and make really detailed areas. For the demonstration I chose to show the first area in the building of the sequel to Tragedy in Tragidor as an example of the detail I like to go into in a single area.

One of the things I'm looking forward to in NWN is the ability to create adventures for my friends. Off-the-shelf adventures can be fun, but it's so much more fun to tailor a game to the things you and your friends enjoy most. I want a game where the tools are provided and I can use my own creativity, my knowledge of my friends' interests and even inside jokes to make an awesome adventure.

Dark Century PW Visit Migrate Wizard 2015-11-09 4 years 5 months ago

The module starts you in the town, and what a town it is. It takes you several minutes to walk across once you know your way around. The maps have been fully explored for you, so you don't have to walk to every corner to see the full town. No area breaches a 256 tile limit, so load times are kept to a minimum. Dark Century also makes use of a Linked Server system. This coupled with a new journal system allow more players to play the game at a time.

Dear Strumpet - Aligned With Evil? Migrate Wizard 2015-11-09 4 years 6 months ago

Dear Strumpet,

I need your help. I’m afraid my life’s devotion is going to go unfulfilled simply because the unwashed masses refuse to recognize a major threat to their collective existence without said threat having a fancy name. It’s as if the populace is under some spell of a marketing genius and won’t give you the time of day unless you’ve got a banner or a slogan attached to your identity.

Dear Strumpet - Barbarian Thong Migrate Wizard 2015-11-09 4 years 6 months ago

Dear Strumpet,

For the last five years I’ve been traveling throughout the countryside plying my trade as an adventurer. I’m a barbarian by birth, but my mother always encouraged me to expand my horizons so whenever possible I’ve taken the time to educate myself with reading or conversing with the local bard on ancient lore. Now I’m used to adversity, as a female warrior I am accustomed to the uphill battle in making a name for myself and earning respect. As time went on however, I eventually got some regular work defending small villages from marauders and thwarting an evil warlord or too.

Dear Strumpet - I'm Not An Ogre Migrate Wizard 2015-11-09 4 years 6 months ago

Dear Strumpet,

I’m an alchemist running a small shop outside of Luskin and have run into a bit of a snag. While experimenting with two elixirs, I apparently distilled the wrong mixture of herbs and, well, now I’m an ogre. Just so you know, I’m not normally an ogre. Ask anyone! Well, anyone except my ex-wife, she’ll tell you a different story, but I digress.

Dear Strumpet - Racial Profiling Migrate Wizard 2015-11-09 4 years 6 months ago

Dear Strumpet,

Hopefully you can be of some help, since I’m all out of ideas. Most people would call me a Zombie. While it’s true that I’m undead, although the enlightened among us like to be called “metabolically different”, the term “zombie” is quite derogatory and has been twisted by popular culture. This racial profiling is getting quite out of control and I’m not sure what to do. It’s been months since I’ve walked down the streets at night without people running away screaming “Help!! The zombie will eat our brains!”

Dear Strumpet - Vampire Victim Bites Back Migrate Wizard 2015-11-09 4 years 6 months ago

Dear Strumpet,

I’ve been around for the past 200 years and this is the first time something like this has happened to me, and I’m at a loss as to what to do. I’m a vampire that is very active on the social scenes. I’m often invited to town events due to my natural charms but something happened at this last social event that has me flustered. Now contrary to popular belief, I don’t bite every young wench I see. I tend to be very selective, and even more selective with those that I choose to sire.
