A Tale by the Fireside Migrate Wizard 2015-09-26 3 years 3 days ago

'There was an army of undead beneath that monstrous tomb.'

Kereen merely rolled her eyes and swallowed deeply from her mug as her partner, Salorn, told the tale of their conquest that he was calling 'The tomb of Evil'. Easing back in her chair, she thought of the day's events rolling them through her mind. They had entered the mound that morning, and in the musty tomb, stumbled across several zombies. The gash in her thigh from the encounter still pulsed, as the healing potion she'd had got to work on the flesh wound.

Zenyth Bloodstone looked at the smoldering remains of the rural tavern. Watching the thick gray smoke rise to the overcast heavens, the shrouded drow wondered how things could have gone so wrong, so quickly. The recent turbulent events rattled inside his hooded head.

As always I follow, one step behind.

Along dusty road, through field, over mountain, down valley I carry the gear that he cannot carry. Tirelessly I carry his plunder, the wealth from his latest adventure. Some gold pieces and a few gems. A rune encrusted war hammer and a jet-black shield with an unholy design. Gear for the camp and food and water for him and for me.

Loftless Migrate Wizard 2015-09-22 3 years 3 days ago

Days had been falling in drops as they vaporized, into weeks carved to nothing distinguished from the humid dungeon fog that served his breath. It was a murder of time itself, the energetic maker's strength sapped by the manacles that kept him from his quill, though he knew that even with the instrument in hand, its point could pierce none of his adversary's shields. Doom was readying its fist for descent to press him into the ground, as the light of his burning flesh shall bless the circle of his followers, lift smoke and screams towards the ravenous hand that would bring down his spirit.

...Strange Bedfellows Migrate Wizard 2015-10-03 3 years 3 days ago

A Tale From the Land of Argyle

The chamber remained as it had been for the last thousand years. Large, leather-bound tomes with cracked spines were neatly arrayed along the rooms many shelves. The worktable in the center still held several vials, ewers, and a small cauldron, its contents long since dried away to leave a murky film at the bottom. From the one window a rose-colored light filtered in through the ever-present fog as the sun settled down over the unseen horizon. The light glinted off a jewel-encrusted skull that lay on the flagstone floor near the chambers iron-bound door, its sockets staring unseeingly into eternity. A thick patina of dust covered everything.

A Neverwinter Nights Fantasy - Chapter Four Migrate Wizard 2015-09-26 3 years 3 days ago

The adventurers, confronted by a quartet of bad-tempered goblins, leapt immediately to the attack.

Margos was the first to strike, stabbing the first in the side before it could even draw its weapon. The goblin crumpled with a strangled cry. The paladin used his momentum to cleave into a second, but that creature had better luck than its comrade, dodging out of the way of the thrust.

A Neverwinter Nights Fantasy - Chapter One Migrate Wizard 2015-09-26 3 years 3 days ago

Greetings!

With Neverwinter Nights finally going gold, and the prospect of months of CRPG goodness ahead, I was inspired to scribble a little homage-slash-parody inspired by the prospect of playing 3e (or at least a reasonable facsimile of it :)) online. This story is intended as part adventure, part comedy, part parody, so please don't take it too seriously. It milks some blatant stereotypes about RP gamers and computer gamers, but in what is (hopefully) a benign and light-hearted way.

A Neverwinter Nights Fantasy - Chapter Three Migrate Wizard 2015-09-26 3 years 3 days ago

The brave adventurers faced their first adversaries, a group of eight skeletons.

Vanguarde did not hesitate, the barbarian leaping forward with another inarticulate warcry. With a mighty two-handed swing he slammed his waraxe into the body of the leading skeleton, shattering its body into a thousand pieces.

The journey to the caves passed so quickly that it seemed almost instantaneous. One moment they were leaving the inn in Neverwinter, and the next they were facing the knobby basalt mounds that made up the foothills of the Crags, the rough line of mountains that bisected Neverwinter Wood. A thick belt of trees ran along the horizon all around them, but directly ahead of them lay a ravine with a

A Tear Lost In the Rain Migrate Wizard 2015-09-30 3 years 3 days ago

The day had been overcast since mid-morning and the clouds had grown darker and heavier as it had passed into evening, finally releasing a torrent of rain, wind and lightning not too long ago. Smythe Higgins sat near the doorway just inside the roadside inns front door sipping at a cup of dandelion tea, waiting and watching the people now pouring into the tavern. The crowd was much larger tonight at the Edmonds Tavern and Inn then usual because of the storm, which suited him just fine. He was only after two people in particular and having lots of people around to confirm he was in the inn made things much easier.

Ar Goll Filwr Migrate Wizard 2015-10-16 3 years 3 days ago

There are six short stories, ranging in length from only two pages to thirteen. The middle three are set within the Four Part Land, the Battle of the Winds and the Sands taking place on the trade route between Tri-Hauwcerton and Bhreac Veryan as it winds through the desert, Yathol's Revenge occurring in an unspecified location along the great peninsula that sticks out into the ocean, while Caer Chan Carega is situated in the city of Tri-Hauwcerton. The first story, The March of the Dead, is set in none of these places, but simply within its own setting, created only for the short story. Ar Goll Filwr also resides in its own little world, created for the story. The Desert of Souls sits athwart the same trade route as the Battle of the Winds and the Sands and is in many ways a successor story, or at least interlinked.

One more piece, a short one that lay half completed on the blog for a time: Ar Goll Filwr. Translated out of Welsh, it means “The Lost Soldier”, a fitting title. It is an idea that has bounced around my head for a while, a man who has a rather interesting and unique way of remembering those who served him. It is possibly a little faster paced than it should be for a story of its themes, but such is the nature of writing short stories

Battle of the Winds and the Sands Migrate Wizard 2015-10-16 3 years 3 days ago

The Desert of Souls sits athwart the same trade route as the Battle of the Winds and the Sands and is in many ways a successor story, or at least interlinked.

In terms of the order in which they were written, Yathol's Revenge is the first, being over a year old, with The March of the Dead second, a short story written on a whim in the middle of work on Caer Chan Carega, which was completed afterwards, near the beginning of this year. Battle of the Winds and the Sands is not a brand new piece, but it is under a month old, written as a break from the Tale of the Apprentice, the first in a series of ongoing serialized stories that will eventually be turned into a novel, if all goes well.

A Player's NWN2 Teething Pains Migrate Wizard 2015-11-12 3 years 3 days ago

So, Neverwinter Nights 2 has officially been out for 5 days now, and the Bioware forums are full of pleas for help and answers/suggestions as what to do for **. ( Help that has been forthcoming from Obsidian and the community at large) . We are a community of players who have become wizards at our favourite game, Neverwinter Nights, and suddenly with NWN2, we are plunged into the deepest of hells, and fumble around just trying to move in this new incarnation of our game, never mind having to learn a totally new interface. Well, OK, so maybe some of you have not felt like that, I certainly see evidence of it in the forums posts proclaiming "It runs like a dream on my system" Some with lower end systems are also finding no problem with the adjustment, and if anything, that gives me heart; for if this is true, then surely I, an avid lover of NWN and all it is, can learn this new system and play my most favourite game?

A Whole Lot to Say in One Editorial dwinblood 2015-11-09 1 year 2 weeks ago

Well, I had been planning on trudging into the editorial world to discuss what is evil and playing evil characters as was done last month. You know how it is though I got side tracked by all my Neverwinter Nights projects. Then lo and behold a continuous stream of editorials continues to hit the vault discussing epic levels. It is the entire to be or not to be discussion. So, in this editorial I will touch on those two topics and will also discuss some suggestions for making this game “fun” to play.

ALFA - First Steps Migrate Wizard 2015-11-09 3 years 3 days ago

So today was the launch of ALFA and it was a great excuse to get to do some playing thanks to some press passes from the team. After logging in at their website I was taken to the member's page which had links for their hak pack (80MB) and a large list of addresses for their servers. Taking note of the password, I downloaded the file and started off on the server run by Mandos, ALFA's project administrator which covered Arabel.

Alignment Editorial (Different View) Migrate Wizard 2015-11-09 3 years 3 days ago

Mandos of ALFA recently presented a good view on what he felt the different alignments in AD&D (now just D&D again) meant. However, I felt that much of what he posted were more personal views rather then general rules of thumbs other DMs and players could use for their own information. Therefore, I've taken some time to write this as a "different view" of alignments.

This is if you like, a PW spotlight as well as an interview with the main builder/DM Tarashon, and Seeker the main scripter of ALANGARA online persistent world. It all started from reading a post and misunderstanding the content therein. Tarashon, lead builder & DM for the PW ALANGARA gave life to an idea by building a theater where plays can be performed and placing it in the PW. Now this is not any normal theater, oh no, this is an amazing theater that goes by the name of 'The Masquerade Theater'. Excited at the prospect that players could actually host plays, and also have control over the stage, change costumes (appearance by way of some magical scripting) I arranged to jump in game and take a look at what he had created.
