The March of the Dead Migrate Wizard 2015-10-16 3 years 5 months ago

There are six short stories, ranging in length from only two pages to thirteen. The middle three are set within the Four Part Land, the Battle of the Winds and the Sands taking place on the trade route between Tri-Hauwcerton and Bhreac Veryan as it winds through the desert, Yathol's Revenge occurring in an unspecified location along the great peninsula that sticks out into the ocean, while Caer Chan Carega is situated in the city of Tri-Hauwcerton. The first story, The March of the Dead, is set in none of these places, but simply within its own setting, created only for the short story. Ar Goll Filwr also resides in its own little world, created for the story. The Desert of Souls sits athwart the same trade route as the Battle of the Winds and the Sands and is in many ways a successor story, or at least interlinked.

In terms of the order in which they were written, Yathol's Revenge is the first, being over a year old, with The March of the Dead second, a short story written on a whim in the middle of work on Caer Chan Carega, which was completed afterwards, near the beginning of this year. Battle of the Winds and the Sands is not a brand new piece, but it is under a month old, written as a break from the Tale of the Apprentice, the first in a series of ongoing serialized stories that will eventually be turned into a novel, if all goes well.

Still disoriented from his state of unconsciousness, Hermit stumbled to his feet and hopped out of his bedroom and into the kitchen. The entire ship was on full alert from last night's incident and the loss of over a dozen crewmen. Killian had told the captain the intruder had been after him, but the captain wasn't certain. The captain thought Killian had just gotten in the way when the dark elf was in the middle of some evil task and the captain was thankful that Killian had stopped him. Killian wasn't certain, but he doubted it.

Caer Chan Carega #8 Migrate Wizard 2015-10-13 3 years 11 months ago

This is an unpolished (but finished) story that takes place somewhere in the world that I created. It was written as a means of showing off the actions and abilities of Magic, in this case the Elemental Magic of Earth. There will be 6 of these stories, for the 6 forms of magic: The four Elements (Air, Earth, Water, Fire), Spirit, and Nature magic. The four elements, are, as usual for elemental magic, tied together somewhat, although in a slightly different manner: Air opposes Fire, and Earth opposes Water. Spirit and Nature magic are entirely different, one based on the existence of the spirit world (think Greek Hades, as a general guide), and Nature magic, which is very totemic in nature. This story will be published in 15 installments.

This is part eight of the story of Earth. This takes place in a more defined setting, the city of Tri-Hauwcerton, more easily called the city of Earth. It lies in the North and West, cupped by the valley of a great mountain range.

I ended up choosing an image that represented Chloddio's love of the high mountains

The Way of the Hunter - The Final Battle (Chapter Five) Migrate Wizard 2015-10-09 3 years 11 months ago

As the dust settles after the battle with the King of Shadows, the people of Neverwinter wait in anticipation for the triumphant return of their heroes...but they never came back. What became of their champions? Where is the Knight-Captain? Will she finally return victorious, or will she forever live on only in tavern stories?

(A what-might-have-been story post-NWN2, with some flashbacks to the OC. Be gentle, this is my first attempt!)

Embers of Black - Chapter Seventeen Migrate Wizard 2015-09-29 3 years 11 months ago

A shining sun hung overhead as the party left the cavern the next morning. Talomanes led the way, leading them by memory. Anluriel trudged along in his wake, her and the two other drow caught in the ambush moving stiffly from their still-healing wounds. The red-cloaked Anjolina made her way as best she could behind the drow, her heavy clothing sometimes bogging her down in the snow. Korg came next, his axe slung across his right shoulder as he carried a satchel loaded down with books across his left. Illandra and Corenne came after the orc, talking quietly amongst themselves, one of them occasionally moving up beside Korg to ask him a question. Maezinessa and Jaezil held the rear position, keen drow eyes keeping a vigilant watch for another ambush.

The look of his face, the color of his hair, the red of his eyes were all more than enough to cause Ilana to cry and wish there was a way out of her predicament. If the Gods still existed, she would pray to them for help, but she knew she would not get any help from there. Even finding a Cleric was rare enough, much less an avenger of good, a Paladin. But Ilana knew her fate was decided now. She was to become a slave to this horrible, fat, disgusting man.

Each day I leave the house at 7.30am, Sarah standing at the door, arms wrapped around her waist as her small white teeth chew her lower lip in worry. I go to the office, answer the calls, solve the problems and pass the time of day with my co-workers. All of this and I do it well, for they do not know that here, inside myself, I am screaming and calm at the same time. Automated, doing what is expected of me, although it no longer holds any meaning. I am disconnected, and I think I am glad of it. No longer a cog within a great grinding wheel, but an imposter, playing a part, yet waiting for the curtain to drop. Is this better than total ignorance, better than the oblivion of conforming? Am I mad, or are they? Where did I go for that month?

The main character of this story is a young man/old teenager (At the beginning, anyway) by the name of Tarranauborn on the island of Bohortha Eilan, and living in the city of Tregonethra, which lies on the Northwest side of the island, facing towards a long peninsula from the mainland. Its also one of the trading hubs, as well as the primary place for seafood.

Dalanthanar pulled fiercely against the reins trying to regain control of his steed amidst the torrential rain, which was now blowing nearly perpendicular; a bolt of lightning had struck an ancient oak just a few feet away, splitting its trunk in twain and startling the horses. Dalanthanar's mount ceased bucking as he patted its neck, and whispered soothing words; promising Relad carrots and sugar beets if he would just cease his rearing.

Doragon collapsed to the ground, his heart pounding heavily. Fortunately, the creature's sharp claws had only just grazed his skin. Without his leather armour, the wound could have been much more serious. He turned to Tarok, and thanked his friend profusely. "One more swipe from that thing and I dare say I would have been in real trouble!" Tarok nodded. A compliment like that gave him a great sense of achievement inside. His magic was becoming truly useful now, and he knew that the group was beginning to depend upon it. All three friends were certainly impressed by Tarok's proficiency, and congratulated the wizard on a magnificent display.

William cursed as he stuck his finger for the third time while trying to repair a tear in his guild tunic. It was bad enough having to wear the beat up thing before Councilor Aquilar as it was. It was not often that Trainers of the Crucible were even allowed to see one of the Council of Five much less be summoned before one of them. This could only mean that his many weeks of research into the origins of the Tournament and the founding of the guild had reached her. Whether this was a good or bad thing was yet to be seen. He grimaced as he put on the tunic and examined himself in the full-length mirror in Schoolmaster Cedric's room. How pathetic it looked.

"Of all places in the world, they had to hide here... We could have hidden ourselves up in the mountains; we could have hidden ourselves by the sea, or even underground. But nay! We had to go hide in a forest, of all possible places! The forest is full of animals and plants and pinecotts and durned trees!"

Over the years, the rivalry of his siblings to gain their parents support pushed Robert at an increasing distance from his family. Dustlifter - The Villain's Names (Chapter Two) Migrate Wizard 2015-09-22 3 years 11 months ago

For a long while, there was darkness. There still is, keeping its dominion from the lights of the outside world. This may take its place somewhere in the barrows of an orc army, or it may have never taken place yet, perhaps even now its consequences storm into the south. Whatever it is, it stays as dark as the most somber night that passed above Calindra, a city, a hole in the world it was made out of. The azure pillars of marble reaching out to hold its loft remain covered in a veil of nothingness, and even if our Lady ever did take pity on them, summoned its beauty to shine off their highest facets, the minced fragments below would still not be exposed. These minced fragments, however, are far more worthy of watch than the lifeless columns that stand above them, for stones do not march about the land in its own name unless stirred up by earthquakes and volcanoes. These short men had no need of such, as they were earthquakes and volcanoes themselves. There were four of them marching at a steady foot-second pace, with one rushing ahead to messenger their approach through the cloud darkness. Each bore a great black hammer in his grey steel gauntlets, pounding the granite stairs with his saldiem boots as the group went onward grim-faced stone-spirited. The sounds they launched were so strong they matched thunder, as if intended to send word of their presence to someone still hidden behind the doors. Pressing the floor, they kept their march orderly as they stepped on escalating stone steps, once, twice and the final one was gone behind them. As their leader shouted at the doors in an uncomprehensible tongue amidst uncomprehensible sounds, the granite dove back into its matron floor and revealed a hollow cylinder filled with seven pillars around a circle of stairs, the missing eighth facing what seconds before were the doors. Atop that circle, raised at half the room's level stood an elaborate adamantine throne to match the chamber in its entirety: tall carvings of ruby-bearded heroes stepped their golden sandals or blue saldiem boots on the floor that was a gem mine, each stone placed in one of the detailed mosaics telling the world's ever-changing tales. A cluster of emeralds covered the front, with crimson stones running from their side to the room's center. The chart stopped at the stairs and pillars, for they were to hold things far more sacred than this world in its entirety. Filling the lenght of each circle-step and spiraling from the height of every column, the glyphs marked in adamantine spoke the very words of the earth, words which would never be stepped on or crushed by anyone but the earth itself. This sanctity known to the group, they approached only as close as the stone guards standing one against a pillar and went down on their knees to honor that which was above on their throne.

Ah, another foray to change the minds of those who are still 3E-challenged. This time we are taking on the wizard class in all it's arcane glory. The wizard, though not a jack of all trades like the bard, is a master of all situations through the variety and increasing power of his spells.

Raising the Stakes - Tension is a Good Thing Migrate Wizard 2015-11-11 3 years 11 months ago

"Drama is life with the dull bits cut out." -Alfred Hitchcock

Everyone loves a good story, and in a roleplaying game, players get to be part of the story. Good stories, whether on film, in a book, in life or in games, need dramatic tension. By dramatic tension I mean anything that makes our hearts beat faster, and I’d argue that love and sex may do this in life, it rarely works that way in RPGs! So I think dramatic tension comes from having something at stake. When you care about something happening, and it might not go the way you want, you experience dramatic tension.

Alignment Editorial (Different View) Migrate Wizard 2015-11-09 3 years 11 months ago

Mandos of ALFA recently presented a good view on what he felt the different alignments in AD&D (now just D&D again) meant. However, I felt that much of what he posted were more personal views rather then general rules of thumbs other DMs and players could use for their own information. Therefore, I've taken some time to write this as a "different view" of alignments.
