The Saga of Bellona, Priestess of Pwyll - Initiation (Chapter One) Migrate Wizard 2015-09-26 3 years 11 months ago

She had never felt closer to Pwyll than at this moment. As she stood with her blue robe draped over her body, she looked up into the eyes of her master. The huge statue that depicted her god towered above her, looking down at her in his infinite wisdom. In her heart she vowed to always do as her god wished of her. Her vision was blurred as tears began to stream down her face, and the high priest handed her her newly bound book, the one she would never part with, the book of Pwyll's will.

Ardru Haefdane stared into the blackness of the corridor, trying to determine the nature of the beast that lurked ahead. Faint light from the city streetlamps filtered through the hallway's one small window, yet it only seemed to accentuate the shadows. The experienced warrior lowered his hand to the hilt of the heavy broadsword at his hip, steeling himself for the inevitable attack.

Dustlifter - The Villain's Names (Chapter Two) Migrate Wizard 2015-09-22 3 years 11 months ago

For a long while, there was darkness. There still is, keeping its dominion from the lights of the outside world. This may take its place somewhere in the barrows of an orc army, or it may have never taken place yet, perhaps even now its consequences storm into the south. Whatever it is, it stays as dark as the most somber night that passed above Calindra, a city, a hole in the world it was made out of. The azure pillars of marble reaching out to hold its loft remain covered in a veil of nothingness, and even if our Lady ever did take pity on them, summoned its beauty to shine off their highest facets, the minced fragments below would still not be exposed. These minced fragments, however, are far more worthy of watch than the lifeless columns that stand above them, for stones do not march about the land in its own name unless stirred up by earthquakes and volcanoes. These short men had no need of such, as they were earthquakes and volcanoes themselves. There were four of them marching at a steady foot-second pace, with one rushing ahead to messenger their approach through the cloud darkness. Each bore a great black hammer in his grey steel gauntlets, pounding the granite stairs with his saldiem boots as the group went onward grim-faced stone-spirited. The sounds they launched were so strong they matched thunder, as if intended to send word of their presence to someone still hidden behind the doors. Pressing the floor, they kept their march orderly as they stepped on escalating stone steps, once, twice and the final one was gone behind them. As their leader shouted at the doors in an uncomprehensible tongue amidst uncomprehensible sounds, the granite dove back into its matron floor and revealed a hollow cylinder filled with seven pillars around a circle of stairs, the missing eighth facing what seconds before were the doors. Atop that circle, raised at half the room's level stood an elaborate adamantine throne to match the chamber in its entirety: tall carvings of ruby-bearded heroes stepped their golden sandals or blue saldiem boots on the floor that was a gem mine, each stone placed in one of the detailed mosaics telling the world's ever-changing tales. A cluster of emeralds covered the front, with crimson stones running from their side to the room's center. The chart stopped at the stairs and pillars, for they were to hold things far more sacred than this world in its entirety. Filling the lenght of each circle-step and spiraling from the height of every column, the glyphs marked in adamantine spoke the very words of the earth, words which would never be stepped on or crushed by anyone but the earth itself. This sanctity known to the group, they approached only as close as the stone guards standing one against a pillar and went down on their knees to honor that which was above on their throne.

Yathol's Revenge #2 Migrate Wizard 2015-10-13 3 years 11 months ago

This is an unpolished (but finished) story that takes place somewhere in the world that I created. It was written as a means of showing off the actions and abilities of Magic, in this case the Elemental Magic of Air. There will be 6 of these stories, for the 6 forms of magic: The four Elements (Air, Earth, Water, Fire), Spirit, and Nature magic. The four elements, are, as usual for elemental magic, tied together somewhat, although in a slightly different manner: Air opposes Fire, and Earth opposes Water. Spirit and Nature magic are entirely different, one based on the existence of the spirit world (think Greek Hades, as a general guide), and Nature magic, which is very totemic in nature. This story will be published in 4 installments.

The Guardian - A Tale From the Land of Argyle Migrate Wizard 2015-10-03 3 years 11 months ago

The man trudged on along the edge of the mist; his boots wearily crunched through the hard snow that lay on the rocky ground, the rim of a battered round shield poked out from behind a tattered cloak. How many times had he crossed this path? How many seasons had he spent circling the edge of the Shroud, challenging the foul, undead creatures that braved the edge of the mist? Four? Five? Even he was not certain anymore.

Two weeks had passed since the victory over the ogres. The remains of the beasts had been carried a safe distance from the fort and cremated in a substantial funeral pyre. The few damaged sections of the fort had been repaired, and the four valiant warriors were slowly healing from their painful struggle with death.

We had, of course, fought many gypsies and minotaurs on the frontier before, to our great profit and advancement. But this time the guards at the gate gave disturbing news of necromantic activity in the area, and fearsome strange beasts to test our mettle. In spite of this warning, or perhaps because of it, we quickly gathered our forces and made ready. The spellcasters among us called forth protective magics, summoning familiars and pets, the fighters checked their weapons and armor.

All eyes were on Tarok as he stood forward, scarcely able to believe the events that he was about to retell. A nearby flight of steps helped to raise him above the crowd, who were now huddled together, eager to hear the story of their timely redemption. Tarok turned to face his audience. "Ladies and gentlemen, dwarfs, elves, halflings, I have the unparalleled pleasure of introducing to you the great elven mage, Eldoran!" There was an emphatic round of applause and cheering. Eldoran bowed graciously but remained silent, allowing Tarok to continue.

The Tale of the Apprentice - Prelude Migrate Wizard 2015-10-16 3 years 11 months ago

The main character of this story is a young man/old teenager (At the beginning, anyway) by the name of Tarranauborn on the island of Bohortha Eilan, and living in the city of Tregonethra, which lies on the Northwest side of the island, facing towards a long peninsula from the mainland. Its also one of the trading hubs, as well as the primary place for seafood.

An image of the main character (although don't get too caught up in the crystals).

The Way of the Hunter - Burying Memories (Chapter Thirty-One) Migrate Wizard 2015-10-10 3 years 11 months ago

What became of their champions? Where is the Knight-Captain? Will she finally return victorious, or will she forever live on only in tavern stories?

(A what-might-have-been story post-NWN2, with some flashbacks to the OC. Be gentle, this is my first attempt!)

"Even my elven eyes cannot pierce this foul darkness," Erana said, awakening from her unconsciousness.

"Mayhaps we should find a more permanent light source," Ruien commented, lifting up his staff.

With a flick of his wrist and a quick verse, the tip of his staff was aglow. It was a calm, blue, moody light, as opposed to that of a torch.

Battle of the Winds and the Sands Migrate Wizard 2015-10-16 3 years 11 months ago

There are six short stories, ranging in length from only two pages to thirteen. The middle three are set within the Four Part Land, the Battle of the Winds and the Sands taking place on the trade route between Tri-Hauwcerton and Bhreac Veryan as it winds through the desert, Yathol's Revenge occurring in an unspecified location along the great peninsula that sticks out into the ocean, while Caer Chan Carega is situated in the city of Tri-Hauwcerton. The first story, The March of the Dead, is set in none of these places, but simply within its own setting, created only for the short story. Ar Goll Filwr also resides in its own little world, created for the story. The Desert of Souls sits athwart the same trade route as the Battle of the Winds and the Sands and is in many ways a successor story, or at least interlinked.

In terms of the order in which they were written, Yathol's Revenge is the first, being over a year old, with The March of the Dead second, a short story written on a whim in the middle of work on Caer Chan Carega, which was completed afterwards, near the beginning of this year. Battle of the Winds and the Sands is not a brand new piece, but it is under a month old, written as a break from the Tale of the Apprentice, the first in a series of ongoing serialized stories that will eventually be turned into a novel, if all goes well.

The Tale of Thunder - Chapter One (Imprisonment) Migrate Wizard 2015-10-02 3 years 11 months ago

Galen awoke with a start. At first he thought he'd gone blind, but then he realized the room really was pitch black. Feeling the cold hard floor, he recognized it to be stone block flooring, a design used for most forts. He must be in a room of some sort inside a fort. Or else a prison. He hadn't thought of that until now.

'Blast this head wound,' Galen cursed. 'It's sure slowing me down some.'

He felt suddenly as if his world had grown and looking around he saw things in a new light.

I ended up choosing an image that represented Chloddio's love of the high mountains

Prophecy of the Talisman - Chapter One (Page Eight) Migrate Wizard 2015-10-04 3 years 11 months ago

Jeran knew he had to act fast. Even though Kal'im looked stable as he held his brother above the deadly precipice, Jeran knew it would be impossible to hold him forever. The rope bridge on which they stood was not the ideal place to attempt a rescue. With only a thick rope on which to balance, and a second rope to hold onto, Jeran searched for an idea on how to help them both. He was not near as agile as Kal'im and wasn't about to let go of the bridge. Suddenly he came up with a plan. Removing a rope from his backpack, he tied one end to the bridge and let the other end fall to Kerli below.

Dara struggled to pull herself up. She found the perfect place to climb on the western wall. The periapt was low enough and the masonry flawed enough for her to pull herself up. Her little hands searched for the cracks, thousand-year-old scars from the Siege of Aramis. She found them, recognizing the grainy surface of the thousand-year-old fissures. A smile crossed her face as she pulled herself up. As her head cleared the top of the periapt, a western breeze wrapped her face with a gentle greeting. With a last pull, Dara cleared the top of the periapt. She didn’t miss it. She let the scene fill her eyes; it’s majesty stirred in her, making her forget the climb and her aching muscles.

This is a scene that doesn’t happen, but it felt like it should. No offence to anyone with a different idea of Casavir’s conflict and leaving of Neverwinter, but I felt like this was the reason they insinuated in the game. It takes place during the investigation of the slaughter of Ember. There are a few lines in here directly from the game. I don’t, for a second, claim to have written these lines, and if this offends anyone, please let me know and I’ll do some editing. I intentionally was very vague with the female PC, so it could be ANY good or neutral female PC having this talk with her favorite paladin, not just one of mine. I’d love to hear your opinions!

Tarok woke late the next morning to the bright sun piercing through the treetops, and the pleasant sound of birds and woodland insects singing busily to themselves. He sat up straight and yawned loudly and openly. For the first time since he left Tarnadon, he actually felt relaxed. The previous day had certainly been an exciting one, and very nearly disastrous as well. He looked out of the window to the forest and could barely believe how different it seemed in the daylight hours. It was as if all the danger of the previous night had been lifted; All the evil creatures of the darkness had fled from the sun's cleansing rays. Tarok surveyed the clearing, and noticed that Carek was sitting down beside a small campfire, cooking breakfast, and muttering softly to himself.

Video Games, NWN, and the Free Market Migrate Wizard 2015-11-11 3 years 11 months ago

Standing in the shower one day, I kind of began to think about video games, and how they are, to put it mildly, excellent. I never realized it before, but not only are they fun, but they are also form an industry which would make Adam Smith very happy. As I see it (and remember as you read this that I am as far from an economist as one can be), the video game industry relies on the quality of products and infusions of new ideas to keep it an incredibly competitive one. On top of that, video games seem to be a major reason of the success and continued development of the home computer. I am writing to this site because I believe that Neverwinter Nights and its upcoming CRPG brethren are a perfect example of everything I am talking about.

Designer Reference Tables – Part One (Hit and be Hit) Migrate Wizard 2015-11-09 3 years 11 months ago

As suggested in a reply to my editorial “A Pen & Paper Perspective”, the following printable tables are intended to supply the module designer or DM with a quick “reality check” and an easy comparison on the mathematical probability (note: NOT some “challenge rating” but plain mathematical chances) for some generic character builds to handle melee enemies.

Note that the whole picture gets a LOT more complicated once magic and all kinds of special abilities enter the picture, but at the core the D&D system is a simple mathematical simulation based on 3 core stats: Armor Class (AC), Attack Bonus and hit points. A simulated fight is won by depleting an enemies hitpoints before he depletes yours. At the bottom, that’s all there is to it. The expected outcome of any given melee fight can be calculated by comparing the chances to hit, the average damage and the opponents’ hitpoints. If this mathematically expected outcome is against the player, the only way to “win” is either plain dumb luck (good die rolls – in other words: reloads) or gaining some other advantage.

And though there are lots of other possible edges to gain (some strategic, many by AI exploit, some by spending resources on short term boosts) they are hard to predict and there’s no way to know in advance what (if any) will be at the player’s disposal.

So as it seems that a huge percentage of community modules are made with melee characters in mind (and, way too often, badly balanced for most of those J) the following tables should serve as a quick reference for the pure simple maths behind it.
