Rating System Editorials - Bayesian Method Migrate Wizard 2015-11-11 4 years 5 months ago

In short, the Bayesian method takes into account both the average score a module has received, and the total number of votes counted. Specifically, the more votes a module receives, the more "reliable" we may consider that average score to be (since more people agree on that score).

This doesn't mean that more votes always translates into a higher placement, however: if two mods have the same score and it is a low score, then the mod which has more votes will actually be placed lower in the rankings.

The technical details behind the Bayesian method are at the end of this article, but first let me address the pros and cons of the method.

An Uphill Battle Migrate Wizard 2015-11-09 4 years 5 months ago

The Amateur Designers Point of View - Or the Flip Side of the Coin Migrate Wizard 2015-11-11 4 years 5 months ago

As a novice/amateur module designer (Uluvin: Trouble in the Hills, and a follow-up currently in the testing stage), I read Vic Kappel's editorial with great interest. It was a very insightful and detailed read, with a lot of excellent suggestions for budding mod designers. However, in reading the editorial, it brought a few thoughts to mind. So to offer some suggestions to the player from the viewpoint of a designer, I offer the following, as sort of a reverse-rebuttal to Mr. Kappel's fine comments.

View from the Vault - NWN Online Migrate Wizard 2015-11-12 4 years 5 months ago

Every now and then I am going to write an article about my observations as site manager of the Neverwinter Vault. While we have many types of spotlights and entries that are requested by community members, these articles will be based solely by my feelings, observations, and slightly askew perspective. Because of this, take them at face value. Articles about Pale Masters are not slights against clerics or people who love to play them, they are merely articles about Pale Masters. Articles about NWN2 are not slights against NWN1, they are simply NWN2 articles.

Dear Strumpet - Racial Profiling Migrate Wizard 2015-11-09 4 years 6 months ago

Dear Strumpet,

Hopefully you can be of some help, since I’m all out of ideas. Most people would call me a Zombie. While it’s true that I’m undead, although the enlightened among us like to be called “metabolically different”, the term “zombie” is quite derogatory and has been twisted by popular culture. This racial profiling is getting quite out of control and I’m not sure what to do. It’s been months since I’ve walked down the streets at night without people running away screaming “Help!! The zombie will eat our brains!”

Design of Area (Area Lighting, Sound, and Design Tricks) Migrate Wizard 2016-03-26 4 years 1 month ago

A while back I was asked by Maximus to share a few little tricks of lighting and design that were used in Tragedy in Tragidor area layout for those who were planning on building modules of their own to add a little bit of spice to BioWare tilesets. If there is one thing I would like to do, it's to give something to the module building community that other module builders can use to make full use of the tilesets and make really detailed areas. For the demonstration I chose to show the first area in the building of the sequel to Tragedy in Tragidor as an example of the detail I like to go into in a single area.

Wilderness: Book One - The Forest (Chapter Nineteen - New Ally, New Foe) Migrate Wizard 2015-09-25 4 years 5 months ago

Doragon felt a great gust of wind sweep right past him, sending the flimsy bridge spinning and bucking like a thread in a gale. Holding on for dear life, he found himself thrown from side to side as the great black form of the storm dragon passed overhead, literally ten feet above. Doragon was in total panic, unable to hear the screams from his friends the other side of the bridge. His hands gripped tightly onto the thick rope, barely able to hold on. The winds slowly subsided, and he found himself dangling precariously from the rope, suspended over a precipitous drop below.

This is an unpolished (but finished) story that takes place somewhere in the world that I created. It was written as a means of showing off the actions and abilities of Magic, in this case the Elemental Magic of Earth. There will be 6 of these stories, for the 6 forms of magic: The four Elements (Air, Earth, Water, Fire), Spirit, and Nature magic. The four elements, are, as usual for elemental magic, tied together somewhat, although in a slightly different manner: Air opposes Fire, and Earth opposes Water. Spirit and Nature magic are entirely different, one based on the existence of the spirit world (think Greek Hades, as a general guide), and Nature magic, which is very totemic in nature. This story will be published in 15 installments.

This is part five of the story of Earth. This takes place in a more defined setting, the city of Tri-Hauwcerton, more easily called the city of Earth. It lies in the North and West, cupped by the valley of a great mountain range.

The Way of the Hunter - The Strength of Friendship (Chapter Two) Migrate Wizard 2015-10-09 4 years 5 months ago

As the dust settles after the battle with the King of Shadows, the people of Neverwinter wait in anticipation for the triumphant return of their heroes...but they never came back. What became of their champions? Where is the Knight-Captain? Will she finally return victorious, or will she forever live on only in tavern stories?

(A what-might-have-been story post-NWN2, with some flashbacks to the OC. Be gentle, this is my first attempt!)

"He ain't more powerful than me arse-choppin' battleaxe of fear and doom and killin', I reckon," Kalamaar explained, grinding his teeth.

"Come, receive my cold steel!" the figure hissed, fazing out of existence.

"...and I tell you again, my research is not in error; it is an exerpt from the hidden writings of King Ryalin II. I recognize the Church's ardor over preserving their doctrine; that Ryalin saved us when he drank from the godswell, from which only a man of Purity and Goodness might partake and live. The following events as described leave us with three choices: Ryalin did not drink from the godswell, or the godswell does not exist, or the godswell does not hold to the properties described of it by this Church. In any case, I urge this hearing to consider the implications of these words. We must remember that Truth can be both beautiful and ugly; to deny one side of the coin is to deny the coin itself..."

The gorge spread out before me; a deep cleft, pine covered, with a falling stream down the center of the cut. To the right side was a decent trail, but I could see where the spring had uncovered slides and tree falls. There would be at least three places where I would either have to climb over thick tree tangles of fallen pines, or try and slide into the draw.

Tales of A Planeswalker - A Brief Respite (Chapter Two) Migrate Wizard 2015-09-22 4 years 5 months ago

Chrono Thran, the mysterious being, was in a place of chaos after stepping through the portal. The Chaos felt wet and dry. It felt warm and cold. But most of all the chaos felt familiar to the being called Chrono. Looking about he could see things no mortal could have comprehended, within the mists of this place were whole other realities.

Hear Me! O Vermin! Migrate Wizard 2015-10-14 4 years 5 months ago

The evil that everyone knows of, but none encountered. Yet we feel it reign within our mind and heart, when shadow encases us.

Joy marks our lives, upon birth. But through time, we encounter things we wish sometimes we hadn't. Dark times have crossed my path, and I wrote this poem during those periods of sorrow.

While writing this poem I tried to create an image of something, that thing we do not know off, yet we fear it. The darkness in shadows which scares us, even though reality tells us such evil does not exist. Whether it exists or not, that is up to you, but its presence, we must admit, we have all felt.

This poem can be used as a warning for a present evil, that lurks your imaginary worlds within Neverwinter. Feel free to use it, or comment (constructive) on it. I would love to hear what such users as yourself feel and think while reading this, and your experience. Please vote aswell, so I could have a reflection of the users' opinion.

Yours sincerely,

Over My Head

The Calling Migrate Wizard 2015-10-03 4 years 5 months ago

As he sat on the high bluff overlooking the Fell Pass, Maedros heard the calling once again. He hunched over trying to hold it back, but there was no stopping it. He had lost the internal struggle yet another time. At first, the changes were subtle; his eye color changed from a deep blue to a green-yellow mix. Then the changes became less and less minute; he started growing fur all over his body, the color of the tiger. His muscles grew to enormous proportions, as did his entire body. When the entire transformation was complete, which took about five minutes, the result would have scared off all but the most daring warriors. He had become the fearsome weretiger yet again.

As the sun touched the western horizon, the wind had picked up again, howling fitfully across the tundra. The gale was like a living thing, seeking to drive its icy fingers into his heart.

The slap was hard, but Jeran was not a small boy. Standing just over six feet, he was strong and muscular compared to those his age, but when it came to his father, his heart was but an eggshell and his father had just crushed it by striking him. Yes, he wanted to be treated like a man, but striking him could not go unanswered. Years of being subservient, boiled a rage deep inside Jeran and like a dam breaking, Jeran sprung to his feet and struck his father in the face.

The skeletons where still backing up when Ybiral approached Gwaemos and told him that the wizard was gone. Gwaemos didn't slow down and the staff was glowing so brightly that it was almost painful to look at. Ybiral returned his sword to it's sheeth and took out a gold talisman. He began uttering a few words of power, nearing the end he held his hands out towards the largest concentration of skeletons and a blast of light errupted from the talisman blasting the undead monsters into small chunks. Skeletons being unthinking beings still stood trying to get through the light that Gwaemos staff was emmiting, this gave Ybiral the time he needed to ready his talisman again. Chanting the words of power again another beam of yellow light blasted forth from the talisman and blew another group of skeletons away. Ybiral looked down at the talisman seeing that it had started to lose it's gold color he knew that the charges where empty and he would need to let them recharge. He drew his long sword and advanced towards the last ten skeletons still trying to get a Gwaemos.

Everyone of us once lost a loved one. Everyone of us has felt the aching beat of your heart when memories of that loved one pour into your mind. We feel lost, thinking this feeling will never go away.

And it is this feeling that remains the longest, and is ever so cruel. I have lost many loved ones in my life, would it be by eternity or merely out of sight. And even though the pain gets less, our mind is heir to it and it will forever remain in our memories. Read this, as a remembrance of your loved ones. The crowd was much larger tonight at the Edmonds Tavern and Inn then usual because of the storm, which suited him just fine. He was only after two people in particular and having lots of people around to confirm he was in the inn made things much easier.
