Sample Module Design - The Synopsis (Part Two) Migrate Wizard 2015-11-13 3 years 12 months ago

In Getting Started, we explained the five main ingredients in making a module: Setting, Synopsis, Critical Path, NPCs, and Maps. This series of tutorials is an example for new DMs who want to create a setting for their modules. In Part I: The Setting, we described the creation of the kingdom of Heirokanth as the setting for our campaign. Now we begin the creation of the Synopsis

The Economy of a Virtual World - Thoughts From Behind the DM Screen Migrate Wizard 2015-11-11 3 years 11 months ago

Before I start down the road, I want to first make a few statements of clarification. There is another editorial on NWVault, by Mandos (AKA Major Bill Marcellino, USMC) titled NWN Economies. This is a great editorial, but it deals with persistent world economies and not static world economies, which is the focus of my editorial. The following analysis is almost exclusively relevant to static module design, not persistent worlds. While there has certainly been a boom in the Persistent World "market" (so to speak), I am not a fan of the MMORPG and I have never been. I leave such discussions to people with expertise in that area, like Mandos. On with the show...

Dear Strumpet - Aligned With Evil? Migrate Wizard 2015-11-09 3 years 12 months ago

Dear Strumpet,

I need your help. I’m afraid my life’s devotion is going to go unfulfilled simply because the unwashed masses refuse to recognize a major threat to their collective existence without said threat having a fancy name. It’s as if the populace is under some spell of a marketing genius and won’t give you the time of day unless you’ve got a banner or a slogan attached to your identity.

Gnome for the Holidays Migrate Wizard 2015-11-11 3 years 12 months ago

Since I am a creature of spontaneity rather than habit, I figured I would add my thoughts on the little fellows since Trent Oster seems to be such a fan and because of the recent issue of Dragon that extolled the benefits of playing a Gnome character.

I'm a patient guy. It takes a lot to get me rattled. Well, for the most part. Sometimes I get a bit antsy when I'm waiting for something to happen, especially when it's something that I expect without question.

Players - What Makes Them Tick? Migrate Wizard 2015-11-11 3 years 11 months ago

Everyone loves a good story. It's what great DM's eat for breakfast. The stories we write, in a way, reveal to our audience (ie, our players) who we are and what we stand for in this life. The critical path of great stories is the development of empathy, and understanding, of the story's central participants and their varied circumstances. A good story takes us out of our own lives and puts us in someone elses' lives and allows us to come away with a greater understanding of ourselves in the process. But everyone finds their own meaning differently through the myriad of characters portrayed therein, and not always necessarily from the Protagonist, ie: "good guy." We sometimes like a movie, or a book, because of the bad guy. The bad guy helps us to define more clearly why we--for the most part--continue to stay and be good, for he is one more example of what we must never become. (Or, if you're bad yourself, the bad guy allows you to relate to someone.)

The following story is based on a true event. I was playing "The Spires of Ravenloft" mod with a friend and I charmed an ox to follow me around. The ox followed me into Ravenloft itself and turned out to be quite a fighter. I expanded on the incident and then wrote the following story. Before this comes up... some cows do have horns, it depends on the species.

The Tale of Thunder - Chapter Two (Beyond Kara-Tur - Part Four: Into The Unknown) Migrate Wizard 2015-10-02 3 years 11 months ago

The bright moon overhead shone down on the group as they set up camp within the ruins of Calledor Nujaal. The firelight from the campfire dimly lit their surroundings. They had carefully picked their way into the ruins, finally setting up camp in what might have once been a marketplace. Now it was entirely bare, the remnants of a fountain lying in the center of it all.

Caer Chan Carega #5 Migrate Wizard 2015-10-13 3 years 11 months ago

This is an unpolished (but finished) story that takes place somewhere in the world that I created. It was written as a means of showing off the actions and abilities of Magic, in this case the Elemental Magic of Earth. There will be 6 of these stories, for the 6 forms of magic: The four Elements (Air, Earth, Water, Fire), Spirit, and Nature magic. The four elements, are, as usual for elemental magic, tied together somewhat, although in a slightly different manner: Air opposes Fire, and Earth opposes Water. Spirit and Nature magic are entirely different, one based on the existence of the spirit world (think Greek Hades, as a general guide), and Nature magic, which is very totemic in nature. This story will be published in 15 installments.

This is part five of the story of Earth. This takes place in a more defined setting, the city of Tri-Hauwcerton, more easily called the city of Earth. It lies in the North and West, cupped by the valley of a great mountain range.

I ended up choosing an image that represented Chloddio's love of the high mountains

The Way of the Hunter - The Strength of Friendship (Chapter Two) Migrate Wizard 2015-10-09 3 years 11 months ago

As the dust settles after the battle with the King of Shadows, the people of Neverwinter wait in anticipation for the triumphant return of their heroes...but they never came back. What became of their champions? Where is the Knight-Captain? Will she finally return victorious, or will she forever live on only in tavern stories?

(A what-might-have-been story post-NWN2, with some flashbacks to the OC. Be gentle, this is my first attempt!)

Embers of Black - Chapter Fourteen Migrate Wizard 2015-09-29 3 years 11 months ago

A softly-glowing ball of magical radiance flashed into being in the night above the score of orcs in the patrol and then faded, blinding their sensitive eyes.

The white-clad figures that rose from the snow in a semi-circle on the orcs' flank had been careful to keep their eyes closed then that magical light had appeared, and they saw quite well in the pale moonlight, arrows leaping from polished bows, finding targets in the ranks of the bedazzled orcs. Within a matter of moments, the entire patrol was down, lithe shapes making their way among the groaning humanoids, finishing off the wounded with quick motions of sword or dagger.

Giant Blue Underpants - Part One Migrate Wizard 2015-09-21 3 years 11 months ago

Ths was written as a CutScene/Movie script for the CTP. Sadly there is no one on the staff who is a CutScene artist, and so I shelved it to gather dust. Some of you may wish it had remained that way! Inspired by the likes of Generika & The Order Of The Stick Comic strips (though certainly nowhere near their class), I gathered enough courage to try my hand at a comic dialogue.

Join Ranger Bert and his talking Bow on a quest to save the world from utter chaos...by returning the stolen Giant Blue Underpants.

Celestial Fire - Page One Migrate Wizard 2015-09-30 3 years 11 months ago

The fluid landscape shimmered in the cold darkness of night. This surreal planes surface glowed under the unnatural mauve sky, its crystalline rock formations towering upward scraping the sky with their jagged edges. This realm of existence was devoid of life in all its multitude of forms yet on its livid surface walked a figure, garbed in long flowing robes that glistened from the starlight above. The figure stalked warily across the alien landscape.

Hear Me! O Vermin! Migrate Wizard 2015-10-14 3 years 11 months ago

The evil that everyone knows of, but none encountered. Yet we feel it reign within our mind and heart, when shadow encases us.

Joy marks our lives, upon birth. But through time, we encounter things we wish sometimes we hadn't. Dark times have crossed my path, and I wrote this poem during those periods of sorrow.

While writing this poem I tried to create an image of something, that thing we do not know off, yet we fear it. The darkness in shadows which scares us, even though reality tells us such evil does not exist. Whether it exists or not, that is up to you, but its presence, we must admit, we have all felt.

This poem can be used as a warning for a present evil, that lurks your imaginary worlds within Neverwinter. Feel free to use it, or comment (constructive) on it. I would love to hear what such users as yourself feel and think while reading this, and your experience. Please vote aswell, so I could have a reflection of the users' opinion.

Yours sincerely,

Over My Head

A Storm at Candlekeep Migrate Wizard 2015-09-28 3 years 11 months ago

Meddwynn hurried up the stone steps of the tower towards his master's chamber. Lightening flashed in the storm riven night sky, illuminating the steps through a narrow slit window. Meddwynn caught a brief glimpse of the rooftops and towers of Candlekeep as he passed the window and reached the door he was seeking.

Jack's Halloween Migrate Wizard 2015-10-17 3 years 11 months ago

This is an acrostic I wrote, themed upon Halloween. It is something I wrote for last year's Halloween and I thought it'd be appropriate to submit this on the 31st of October.

The poem is about the tale of Jack-O'-Lantern, which merely lasts in our memories as a vague story. A story which once consumed children by fear, now is lost with time. A story that once ruled one's fears, now has lost the struggle to fear as we see children holding Jack-O-Lanterns and screaming Trick or Treat.

In dedication to Halloween, this is my poem about the long lost fear. Feel free to use it, or comment(constructive) on it. I would love to hear what such users as yourself feel and think while reading this, and your experience. Please vote as well, so I could have a reflection of the users' opinion.

Wilderness: Book One - The Forest (Chapter Four - History Repeats) Migrate Wizard 2015-09-24 3 years 11 months ago

A bright shaft of early morning light shone in through a tiny circular window in the ceiling. It caught Carek's face, just a sudden sparkle, and then was gone. Carek sat up with a start, wiping his tired eyes. It took him a few moments to work out where he was, and then the events of the previous day began to flit through his mind. He relaxed, then slowly unwrapped himself from the tight, undersized blankets. Through the window a dozen tiny eyes were peering inwards. They shyly ducked out of view as Carek glanced in their direction, then slowly re-appeared to catch another glimpse. Carek crawled out of the narrow doorway and into the outside world. The sprite village was alive with activity, the level of which was excited as the tiny people ran to watch their giant visitor scramble slowly to his feet and survey the scene around him. He seemed even larger to them by the light of day.

The Tale of Thunder - Chapter Three (Uprising of the Shadows - Part Five: The Living Dead) Migrate Wizard 2015-10-03 3 years 11 months ago

The tunnel began to grow darker, making it harder to navigate as the sunlight spilling in from the cave entrance grew farther away. The air suddenly began to grow stale and damp. It was when Thunder could barely see the unevenly formed cave walls that Kessa acted. Thunder could not see what all she did in the dark, but he heard her crack something sharply against the wall, promptly lighting up the tunnel. The object she held in her hand was a stick with a red stone attached to the top of it. The stone flared brightly, lighting the tunnel up to a eerie red tint.

'There was an army of undead beneath that monstrous tomb.'

Kereen merely rolled her eyes and swallowed deeply from her mug as her partner, Salorn, told the tale of their conquest that he was calling 'The tomb of Evil'. Easing back in her chair, she thought of the day's events rolling them through her mind. They had entered the mound that morning, and in the musty tomb, stumbled across several zombies. The gash in her thigh from the encounter still pulsed, as the healing potion she'd had got to work on the flesh wound.

They had been following the trail of blue ooze left by the spider for almost an hour. During several occasions, they lost the trail, as presumably she had taken to the rock walls, but it wasn't long before the ooze could be seen against a rock face and again continuing along the path. Jeran felt this was a good sign that she was severely hurt, and he hoped to find her dead, ending his quest for retribution.

Tale From The World of Argyle - The Storm Rises Migrate Wizard 2015-09-30 3 years 11 months ago

Greywolfe sat near the door to the large storage room turned prison that their captors had tossed them into for 'safe keeping'. All his companions were still alive and surprisingly well considering who their captors were. Drow are not known for their kindness nor for their lack of quick action. This reputation added with the gruesome deaths of the dwarven and gnomish miners and guards made the group look despairingly at each sound that came from outside the door. The drow sleeping drug had long since worn off everyone, who were now wide awake and scared. Apart from the six companions, no other survivors had been seen or even heard of the fifty or so miners and guards. Greywolfe figured that they were all dead from what they had seen before. Probably taken unaware in a fight that was hard fought but all to short for the defenders. He looked over his companions in the dim light of the lone candle lantern that was in the room. Apart from a wound on Gath's side, the only thing really hurt was their pride. But, each of them was bound hand and foot and had a gag securely placed in their mouths. He tried to break the ropes one more time and again, like all the other times, couldn't do it. In fact, his wrists were very sore now, as the rope had rubbed them raw. He slumped back against the wall dejectedly and began to pray again. After all, it was truly the only thing left he could do.

As he sat on the high bluff overlooking the Fell Pass, Maedros heard the calling once again. He hunched over trying to hold it back, but there was no stopping it. He had lost the internal struggle yet another time. At first, the changes were subtle; his eye color changed from a deep blue to a green-yellow mix. Then the changes became less and less minute; he started growing fur all over his body, the color of the tiger. His muscles grew to enormous proportions, as did his entire body. When the entire transformation was complete, which took about five minutes, the result would have scared off all but the most daring warriors. He had become the fearsome weretiger yet again.
