Unable to post to BSN - time to move elsewhere?

Seems like we can't post to the BSN forums right now, despite the following statement:

Thank you for your continued support of social.bioware.com. The site is currently down for maintenance, as we are in the process of converting to new forum software technology with updated capabilities to provide you with the best BioWare Community experience possible. You can still visit "Legacy BSN", although it will become read-only when the site conversion is complete (with the exception of Projects, which will remain active). Forum posts will transfer to the new system, but user groups must be reformed or founded. We apologize for any inconvenience and encourage you to back up or save any important data or conversations you would like to preserve. Please feel free to visit Reddit for an ongoing AMA with Jessica Merizan, BioWare Edmonton/Montreal's Lead Community Manager. She and the team will keep you updated and are happy to answer questions.

I guess something will eventually be reinstated? I've had to archive 50 pages of group discussion by hand tonight, having had no previous warning that existing groups are being terminated.

To be honest, I'm not comfortable with posting to BSN anyway, only doing so because important groups like the CCC hang out there.

I see the argument that newcomers to NWN will look at BSN before they look elsewhere, but I wonder whether the time has come to move serious discussion of NWN onto this site?

The thread on reddit regarding this is only 2 hours old, and the new forum is said to be up within three. No word on creation of any Legacy Game sub-forums. There's some information regarding the changes below from Jessica Merizan, Lead Community Manager:

- Hey there! Currently we're working with our wonderful QA team on one more thing before we put the site up. I'm hoping it should be up in about 30 minutes :) [7:55pm EST]

- should be @ http://forum.bioware.com/ once up and running.

- Approximately 3 hours! I'll update if we think it'll be longer :)

- Custom Avatars that are moderated.

- You can choose from 6 custom backgrounds right now based on Mass Effect and Dragon Age. I will keep your feedback in mind, and look into more customization options for post launch patches :)

- Change User Name once every 90 days.

  • Mobile skinning and functionality for the first time ever
  • Updated technology that allows for a better moderation toolset
  • New set of guidelines with more clearly enforceable rules
  • A new graphic design interface that lightens the look and feel of the site
  • A new landing page to guide players to our key online spaces including Dragon Age Keep, the BioWare Forum, N7HQ, and EA Answer HQ

- Yes there is a section for Fan Creations :) Please create and share!!!

- The new forums will stick to BioWare content (we will still keep an off-topic sub forum however because we think it's a useful outlet) and we won't be bringing back albums or blogs in order to focus on discussion.

  • Groups will not be transferred. This is for several reasons. Primarily because groups were previously un-moderated and I'm not comfortable making a commitment about safety and a constructive online space while bringing over such giant un-moderated content. However, they will be left on "Legacy" BSN as read only and you will be able to recreate your group (as long as it is on-topic to BioWare content) using that data.
  • People don't need to be friends to message each other. PMs are controlled by users.
  • As groups are still hosted by BioWare, they will be moderated by the same set of rules and guidelines as the rest of the website.

- Friends, posts, and topic subscriptions are all being converted :) On the new forums, we check to see if you've played a Dragon Age or Mass Effect game through your authenticated accounted. If our analytics flags that, you'll be able to successfully post in registered game user categories.

Why not wait and see what happens? They are in the process of converting over and it may be fine once they are done.

It's back up at forums.bioware.com, but isn't letting me log in with my old bioware id/password. I created an new Origin account (and gave them fake/throwaway info), and was able to post, but not use my bioware id.

And yes, groups are something that they had promised would not be locked, but they locked.

I barely visit BSN, in part because it's somewhat inevitable that eventually, support for a decade old game will be discontinued - as with all old games, ultimately, it's the fans who will have to create an online presence to support their community. I already post here as my primary (and only) NWN community. I figure if a community like this gets enough posts of actual value early it will attract the userbase by virtue of having more content of interest - hence my asking lots of questions in a quest to build a good log of valuable information for others.

Oh well,

whenever hip and trendy new things are invented by marceting or "forum managers" of these corporations you know... f+++ it!

I hope they keep the nwn site up and running but i may start posting here more and more so a complete change will not be such a thing later.

Their new forum is laggy as hell for me.

That sounds like a good approach; I hope that other prominent community members do likewise.

What else can we do? The new site has no NWN forums and the old BSN is read only now.

I have no problem posting here instead except that often it is pretty laggy for me.

They also moved the NWN forums to the new site now, but they are a little hard to find under Legacy Games.

they have NWN forum here: http://forum.bioware.com/forum/43-neverwinter-nights/

since this is 2nd time they switch forums for NWN, I say that there won't be much traffic there.

There are other places like GOG.COM forums or some gamebanshee, facebook groups(2 major ones) and so on.

If we make this forums here "useable" enough with nice features we could try to attract some ppl.

For anything content related this here is a great place to post since here are the files stored and authors will look for comments.

I´m not happy with the nwn new forums but to me, nwn is worth to register anywhere...

the website is undergoing maintenence to upgrade the system :) when theyre finished itll be better and newer and probably easier. i see no reason to go elsewhere, just give it paitience and time and theyll be back to normal.

besides why would anyone want to leave when there is an already establised community with valuable information relevant to our community? This was bound to happn everyone shouldve known it would happen. just give it time and youll see itll be come out alright : )

"why would anyone want to leave when there is an already establised community with valuable information relevant to our community?"

Well, that knowledge base is key. To be fair, Bioware has little or no commercial reason to help us, beyond goodwill and nostalgia, and no longer invests in modding strategically, so it's entirely reasonable that we should fend for ourselves. Searchable knowledge is already split between the new Bioware sites and the Omnibus (a community recovery of their original site). Sure, we didn't lose the new knowledge this time, but sooner or later a financial blue pencil may well take it out.

When you're in a hole, it's wise to stop digging, so I'd rather see new knowledge accumulating here. In a perfect world, we'd migrate the Omnibus and BSN forum content, too, so that we can search in one place, collecting the key findings into a wiki; but I doubt whether we have the resources or commitment to do that.

To be honest, I have personal reasons, too, which won't necessarily be the same for everyone. Social physics is like a loose cannon into the pack in pool or snooker; some are impacted more than others. Suffice to say that I have irreconcilable differences with the new Bioware regime. Returning to their site makes me feel uneasy, even hypocritical; I was finally swayed by the idea of giving something back to the CCC, but...

BioWare upgraded the forum software and moved the forums to forum.bioware.com. Everything has been transferred over to the new forums, so no worries about data loss on that front. The old forums have been marked read-only, but they are still available for the time-being.

I´m pretty sure that their move have damaged our community once again in terms of communication. Their new forums just suck. IT looks like ass, runs like ass and you always have all the teeny-nonsense everywhere now. I´m a grumpy old man now in my end 30´s and proud to say fuck the new inventions where everything has to be connected---- connected connected connected.....

oh and stay CONNECTED with everything. connect your toilet to your webcam and your refriagtor too and share it with all the others...because "STAY CONNECTED"

Yeah, my main problem really is how it looks and lags. And i dont feel "home" there somehow. I just logged in and the first thing that caught my eye was a new private group "Leonardo dicaprio fan group" ... that nailed it again for me.

In our old forum we were at least closed in our "jail" so to say... no mumbo jumbo around us and it looked like a NWN forum. If we can make this forum here at least in the same colors as the bio was i would be really glad. Just the colors as a first step. And i have some time to help with design if anyone wants to make it all a little bit more fantasy NWN alike ;)

Sorry for my language in the previous post btw!

I share your observation about new bioware forums, but seriously, this forum is even worse... even more slower, even more bright and very poorly aranged. The last is at least one point for the new forums and when I dont use all those crap services like facebook and google+ it is easy to ignore it, isnt it?

they just moved everything over to the new forums. they kept all the relevenant information from the old forums to the new one. im not moving unless there is a way to move all that information to here. have three (possibly more than that) places for neverwinter (facebook, new vault, and the new bioware forums) just gets way out of hand.

everyone is so seperated now if anyone can pull off a single forum for everyone that would be fantastic, but im not getting my hopes up

Frankly, I haven't been to the bioware forums much since the previous time they blew it up and started over. (And that was forever ago.)

I joined the fb groups, which are decent for passing on info.

The BW forums do seem to be up again.

Part of the problem is that we've become a pretty small community. We can't support 4 or 5 different hub forums, etc. 1 or 2 core locations for info to be shared is about all we can manage, I'd guess. (PW-specific forums are a different animal, of course.) The old vault was a pretty good hub for a long time, but it's fallen into decline, which is why this site is here.

If the BW forums work, then great. It'll probably be where new people go, for sure. There seems to be some activity, but it's hardly abuzz with posts flying all about. Not sure if that's a problem with the BW forums, or just a function of NWN being a legacy game, with few people joining the community any more.
